    A multi-level panel smooth transition autoregression for US sectoral production

    We introduce a multi-level smooth transition model for a panel of time series variables, which can be used to examine the presence of common non-linear features across many such variables. The model is positioned in between a fully pooled model, which imposes such common features, and a fully heterogeneous model, which might render estimation problems for some of the panel members. To keep the model tractable, we introduce a second-stage model, which links the parameters in the transition functions with observable explanatory variables. We discuss representation, estimation by concentrated simulated maximum likelihood and inference. We illustrate our model for data on industrial production of 18 US manufacturing sectors, and document that there are subtle differences across sectors in leads and lags for business cycle recessions and expansions

    Re-branding: The Case of Southern Miss Athletics

    In late July 2011, administrative trademark judges in the US Patent and Trademark Office ruled, in a 2-1 decision, that the University of Southern Mississippi would have to discontinue the use of its Golden Eagle logo because it was too similar in appearance to the University of Iowa Hawkeye (Hinton, 2011). Administrative trademark judge David Bucher wrote in his majority opinion that he backed Iowa\u27s claim that there would be the likelihood of confusion in merchandise sales between the schools and the “the overall similarity in appearance of the marks on the goods, particularly in light of the use of identical color schemes, creates virtually identical commercial impressions (Hinton, 2011). The purpose of this presentation is not to debate the merits of the legal hearing. Rather, the case describes how university administrators, students, alumni, faculty, and other constituents turned a seemingly negative judicial ruling into a positive opportunity to upgrade and improve the university’s brand. An outline of this inclusive process began to emerge when then-President Martha Saunders stated, “You can change the way a product looks, repackage it, put a new wrapper on it, but to brand an organization requires people.” USM engaged a local consulting firm to assist with its rebranding effort, and the importance of focusing on several traditional factors was evident. The present study looks at how the character, pride, authenticity, and strength of the athletic department were incorporated into the new logo and ultimately the university’s identity. Other issues to be addressed are: 1) The timeline for revealing the new logo 2) How other institutions handled similar roll-outs of new logos 3) Logistic issues in using the new logo 4) Costs of implementing the new log

    A Population-Based Cohort Study of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing Strains: An Emerging Public Health Threat in an Immigrant-Receiving Country?

    Mycobacterium tuberculosis Beijing strains are frequently associated with tuberculosis outbreaks and drug resistance. However, contradictory evidence and limited study generalizability make it difficult to foresee if the emergence of Beijing strains in high-income immigrant-receiving countries poses an increased public health threat. The purpose of this study was to determine if Beijing strains are associated with high risk disease presentations relative to other strains within Canada.This was a retrospective population-based study of culture-confirmed active TB cases in a major immigrant-receiving province of Canada in 1991 through 2007. Of 1,852 eligible cases, 1,826 (99%) were successfully genotyped. Demographic, clinical, and mycobacteriologic surveillance data were combined with molecular diagnostic data. The main outcome measures were site of disease, lung cavitation, sputum smear positivity, bacillary load, and first-line antituberculosis drug resistance.A total of 350 (19%) patients had Beijing strains; 298 (85%) of these were born in the Western Pacific. Compared to non-Beijing strains, Beijing strains were significantly more likely to be associated with polyresistance (aOR 1.8; 95% CI 1.0-3.3; p = 0.046) and multidrug-resistance (aOR 3.4; 1.0-11.3; p = 0.049). Conversely, Beijing strains were no more likely than non-Beijing strains to be associated with respiratory disease (aOR 1.3; 1.0-1.8; p = 0.053), high bacillary load (aOR 1.2; 0.6-2.7), lung cavitation (aOR 1.0; 0.7-1.5), immediately life-threatening forms of tuberculosis (aOR 0.8; 0.5-1.6), and monoresistance (aOR 0.9; 0.6-1.3). In subgroup analyses, Beijing strains only had a significant association with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (aOR 6.1; 1.2-30.4), and an association of borderline significance with polyresistant tuberculosis (aOR 1.8; 1.0-3.5; p = 0.062), among individuals born in the Western Pacific.Other than an increased risk of polyresistant or multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, Beijing strains appear to pose no more of a public health threat than non-Beijing strains within a high-income immigrant-receiving country

    Baseline characteristics and enrichment results from the SONAR trial

    Aim: The SONAR trial uses an enrichment design based on the individual response to the selective endothelin receptor antagonist atrasentan on efficacy (the degree of the individual response in the urinary albumin‐to‐creatinine ratio [UACR]) and safety/tolerability (signs of sodium retention and acute increases in serum creatinine) to assess the effects of this agent on major renal outcomes. The patient population and enrichment results are described here. Methods: Patients with type 2 diabetes with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) within 25 to 75 mL/min/1.73 m2 and UACR between 300 and 5000 mg/g were enrolled. After a run‐in period, eligible patients received 0.75 mg/d of atrasentan for 6 weeks. A total of 2648 responder patients in whom UACR decreased by ≥30% compared to baseline were enrolled, as were 1020 non‐responders with a UACR decrease of <30%. Patients who experienced a weight gain of >3 kg and in whom brain natriuretic peptide exceeded ≥300 pg/mL, or who experienced an increase in serum creatinine >20% (0.5 mg/dL), were not randomized. Results: Baseline characteristics were similar for atrasentan responders and non‐responders. Upon entry to the study, median UACR was 802 mg/g in responders and 920 mg/g in non‐responders. After 6 weeks of treatment with atrasentan, the UACR change in responders was −48.8% (95% CI, −49.8% to −47.9%) and in non‐responders was −1.2% (95% CI, −6.4% to 3.9%). Changes in other renal risk markers were similar between responders and non‐responders except for a marginally greater reduction in systolic blood pressure and eGFR in responders. Conclusions: The enrichment period has successfully identified a population with a profound UACR reduction without clinical signs of sodium retention in whom a large atrasentan effect on clinically important renal outcomes is possible.     Correlation of Studies between Colour, Structure and Mechanical Properties of Commercially Produced ThermoWood® Treated Norway Spruce and Scots Pine

    The thermal modification of wood has become the most-commonly commercialised wood modification process globally, with the ThermoWood® process currently being the most dominant. As with all commercial processes, there is a need to have a robust quality control system, with several small–scale studies undertaken to date investigating quality control using a range of analytical methods, culminating in a multi-year assessment of colour as a means of quality control. This study, as an extension to this multi-year assessment, further explores the colour of Norway spruce and Scots pine commercially modified by the ThermoWood® S and D processes, respectively, along with the mechanical properties and structural characterisation by Fourier transform infrared (FT–IR) spectroscopy and principal component analysis (PCA) to ascertain further correlations between colour and other measurable properties. Infrared spectroscopy indicated modifications in the amorphous carbohydrates and lignin, whereas the use of PCA allowed for the differentiation between untreated and modified wood. Colour measurements indicated reduced brightness, and shifting toward red and yellow colours after thermal modification, hardness values decreased, whereas MOE and MOR values were similar for modified wood compared to unmodified ones. However, by combining the colour measurements and PC scores, it was possible to differentiate between the two modification processes (Thermo–S and Thermo–D). By combining the mechanical properties and PC scores, it was possible to differentiate the untreated wood from the modified ones, whereas by combining the mechanical properties and colour parameters, it was possible to differentiate between the three groups of studied samples. This demonstrates there is a degree of correlation between the test methods, adding further confidence to the postulation of using colour to ensure quality control of ThermoWood®
