Parameter identification for an abstract Cauchy problem by quasilinearization
A parameter identification problem is considered in the context of a linear abstract Cauchy problem with a parameter-dependent evolution operator. Conditions are investigated under which the gradient of the state with respect to a parameter possesses smoothness properties which lead to local convergence of an estimation algorithm based on quasi-linearization. Numerical results are presented concerning estimation of unknown parameters in delay-differential equations
Reduced heat input keyhole welding through improved joint design
An improved high energy density welding method for reducing input keyhole welding prepares the weld joint (8) between two edges (10, 14) of at least one member by separating the edges (10, 14) of the member (12, 16) with a controllable gap (22) by a projecting portion (24) selectively positioned on one edge (10, 14) of the member (12, 16). The projecting portion (24) closely abuts the other edge of the member for maintaining the controlled distance (d) of the controllable gap (22) to enhance the welding method
Turnover Processes in a Temporal Context: It's About Time
To better understand the process of organizational withdrawal, a turnover model incorporating dynamic predictors measured at five distinct points in time was examined by following a large, occupationally diverse sample over a two-year period. Results demonstrated that turnover can be predicted by perceived costs of turnover, organizational commitment, and critical events measured soon after entry into the organization, and unemployment rates, job satisfaction, and search for alternative jobs also become significant predictors when measured over time. Critical events also predicted turnover in a manner distinct from the operation of attitudes, consistent with the unfolding model (Lee & Mitchell, 1994). The path to turnover was marked by consistently low perceived costs of turnover and satisfaction, decreases in commitment, and increases in job search over time.
Approaching the Heisenberg limit in an atom laser
We present experimental and theoretical results showing the improved beam quality and reduced divergence
of an atom laser produced by an optical Raman transition, compared to one produced by an rf transition. We
show that Raman outcoupling can eliminate the diverging lens effect that the condensate has on the outcoupled
atoms. This substantially improves the beam quality of the atom laser, and the improvement may be greater
than a factor of 10 for experiments with tight trapping potentials. We show that Raman outcoupling can
produce atom lasers whose quality is only limited by the wave function shape of the condensate that produces
them, typically a factor of 1.3 above the Heisenberg limit

The Politics of Annexation examines the process of American cities using annexation of suburban areas as a tool to increase their tax base and generate new revenue. The authors find that the annexation by Richmond, Virginia of part of Chesterfield County in 1970 was in fact racially motivated, and a way to dilute the black vote. They examine the details behind the annexation as well as its aftermath in subsequent litigation, leading to the Supreme Court. They also study annexation cases in Houston and San Antonio, drawing parallels with Richmond regarding their racially-based annexation efforts.

The Physical Parameters of the Retired A Star HD185351
We report here an analysis of the physical stellar parameters of the giant
star HD185351 using Kepler short-cadence photometry, optical and near infrared
interferometry from CHARA, and high-resolution spectroscopy. Asteroseismic
oscillations detected in the Kepler short-cadence photometry combined with an
effective temperature calculated from the interferometric angular diameter and
bolometric flux yield a mean density, rho_star = 0.0130 +- 0.0003 rho_sun and
surface gravity, logg = 3.280 +- 0.011. Combining the gravity and density we
find Rstar = 5.35 +- 0.20 Rsun and Mstar = 1.99 +- 0.23 Msun. The trigonometric
parallax and CHARA angular diameter give a radius Rstar = 4.97 +- 0.07 Rsun.
This smaller radius,when combined with the mean stellar density, corresponds to
a stellar mass Mstar = 1.60 +- 0.08 Msun, which is smaller than the
asteroseismic mass by 1.6-sigma. We find that a larger mass is supported by the
observation of mixed modes in our high-precision photometry, the spacing of
which is consistent only for Mstar =~ 1.8 Msun. Our various and independent
mass measurements can be compared to the mass measured from interpolating the
spectroscopic parameters onto stellar evolution models, which yields a
model-based mass M_star = 1.87 +- 0.07 Msun. This mass agrees well with the
asteroseismic value,but is 2.6-sigma higher than the mass from the combination
of asteroseismology and interferometry. The discrepancy motivates future
studies with a larger sample of giant stars. However, all of our mass
measurements are consistent with HD185351 having a mass in excess of 1.5 Msun.Comment: ApJ accepte

Image-based Quantification of 3D Morphology for Bifurcations in the Left Coronary Artery: Application to Stent Design
Background
Improved strategies for stentâbased treatment of coronary artery disease at bifurcations require a greater understanding of artery morphology. Objective
We developed a workflow to quantify morphology in the left main coronary (LMCA), left anterior descending (LAD), and left circumflex (LCX) artery bifurcations. Methods
Computational models of each bifurcation were created for 55 patients using computed tomography images in 3D segmentation software. Metrics including crossâsectional area, length, eccentricity, taper, curvature, planarity, branching law parameters, and bifurcation angles were assessed using openâsources software and custom applications. Geometric characterization was performed by comparison of means, correlation, and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Results
Differences between metrics suggest dedicated or multistent approaches should be tailored for each bifurcation. For example, the side branch of the LCX (i.e., obtuse marginal; OM) was longer than that of the LMCA (i.e., LCXprox) and LAD (i.e., first diagonal; D1). Bifurcation metrics for some locations (e.g., LMCA Finet ratio) provide results and confidence intervals agreeing with prior findings, while revised metric values are presented for others (e.g., LAD and LCX). LDA revealed several metrics that differentiate between artery locations (e.g., LMCA vs. D1, LMCA vs. OM, LADprox vs. D1, and LCXprox vs. D1). Conclusions
These results provide a foundation for elucidating common parameters from healthy coronary arteries and could be leveraged in the future for treating diseased arteries. Collectively the current results may ultimately be used for design iterations that improve outcomes following implantation of future dedicated bifurcation stents
Method and Apparatus for Triboelectric-Centrifugal Separation
A method for separating two species of particles present in raw feedstock includes electrically charging at least one of the species of particles being separated. Next is the subjecting of the particles to both centrifugal and electrostatic forces. This is done in a manner so as to provide an additive effect and thereby achieve enhanced separation of the two particle species. An apparatus for processing the raw feedstock in accordance with the method is also disclosed
