Non Local Theories: New Rules for Old Diagrams
We show that a general variant of the Wick theorems can be used to reduce the
time ordered products in the Gell-Mann & Low formula for a certain class on non
local quantum field theories, including the case where the interaction
Lagrangian is defined in terms of twisted products.
The only necessary modification is the replacement of the
Stueckelberg-Feynman propagator by the general propagator (the ``contractor''
of Denk and Schweda)

Applications of Information Theory to Analysis of Neural Data
Information theory is a practical and theoretical framework developed for the
study of communication over noisy channels. Its probabilistic basis and
capacity to relate statistical structure to function make it ideally suited for
studying information flow in the nervous system. It has a number of useful
properties: it is a general measure sensitive to any relationship, not only
linear effects; it has meaningful units which in many cases allow direct
comparison between different experiments; and it can be used to study how much
information can be gained by observing neural responses in single trials,
rather than in averages over multiple trials. A variety of information
theoretic quantities are commonly used in neuroscience - (see entry
"Definitions of Information-Theoretic Quantities"). In this entry we review
some applications of information theory in neuroscience to study encoding of

Paternity in mallards: effects of sperm quality and female sperm selection for inbreeding avoidance
Postcopulatory processes might play an important role in sexual selection. In theory, fertilization success could be controlled by females via selection of particular sperm within their reproductive tract, or it could be determined by sperm competition per se. In practice, these two mechanisms are difficult to disentangle. To assess the relative importance of both mechanisms we used artificial insemination in combination with measurements of sperm quality (swimming speed and motility) in mallards. In this species, females often lack behavioral control over copulations and hence may use postcopulatory mechanisms to optimize their reproductive output. One important factor affecting female fitness may be selection of genetically compatible males. To investigate the influence of sperm quality and parental relatedness on paternity we inseminated 12 groups of related females with a sperm mixture containing equal numbers of sperm from a brother and from an unrelated male. Paternity was independent of the relatedness of the siring male to the female but was significantly affected by long-term sperm swimming speed and motility. No interaction between relatedness and sperm quality on paternity was observed. These results suggest that female mallards are not able to select sperm on a purely genetic basis and emphasize the importance of sperm quality in gaining paternit
Effects of strong density fluctuations at the plasma edge on ECEI measurements at ASDEX Upgrade

Full oxide heterostructure combining a high-Tc diluted ferromagnet with a high-mobility conductor
We report on the growth of heterostructures composed of layers of the
high-Curie temperature ferromagnet Co-doped (La,Sr)TiO3 (Co-LSTO) with
high-mobility SrTiO3 (STO) substrates processed at low oxygen pressure. While
perpendicular spin-dependent transport measurements in STO//Co-LSTO/LAO/Co
tunnel junctions demonstrate the existence of a large spin polarization in
Co-LSTO, planar magnetotransport experiments on STO//Co-LSTO samples evidence
electronic mobilities as high as 10000 cm2/Vs at T = 10 K. At high enough
applied fields and low enough temperatures (H < 60 kOe, T < 4 K) Shubnikov-de
Haas oscillations are also observed. We present an extensive analysis of these
quantum oscillations and relate them with the electronic properties of STO, for
which we find large scattering rates up to ~ 10 ps. Thus, this work opens up
the possibility to inject a spin-polarized current from a high-Curie
temperature diluted oxide into an isostructural system with high-mobility and a

Effects of density gradients and fluctuations at the plasma edge on ECEI measurements at ASDEX Upgrade
Electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) provides measurements of electron temperature (Te) and its fluctuations (δTe). However, when measuring at the plasma edge, in the steep gradient region, radiation transport effects must be taken into account. It is shown that due to these effects, the scrape-off layer region is not accessible to the ECEI measurements in steady state conditions and that the signal is dominated by the shine-through emission. Transient effects, such as filaments, can change the radiation transport locally, but cannot be distinguished from the shine-through. Local density measurements are essential for the correct interpretation of the electron cyclotron emission, since the density fluctuations influence the temperature measurements at the plasma edge. As an example, a low frequency 8 kHz mode, which causes 10%–15% fluctuations in the signal level of the ECEI, is analysed. The same mode has been measured with the lithium beam emission spectroscopy density diagnostic, and is very well correlated in time with high frequency magnetic fluctuations. With radiation transport modelling of the electron cyclotron radiation in the ECEI geometry, it is shown that the density contributes significantly to the radiation temperature (Trad) and the experimental observations have shown the amplitude modulation in both density and temperature measurements. The poloidal velocity of the low frequency mode measured by the ECEI is 3 km s–1. The calculated velocity of the high frequency mode measured with the magnetic pick-up coils is about 25 km s–1. Velocities are compared with the E × B background flow velocity and possible explanations for the origin of the low frequency mode are discussed.EUROfusion Consortium 63305
Optimal Concentration of Light in Turbid Materials
In turbid materials it is impossible to concentrate light into a focus with
conventional optics. Recently it has been shown that the intensity on a dyed
probe inside a turbid material can be enhanced by spatially shaping the wave
front of light before it enters a turbid medium. Here we show that this
enhancement is due to concentration of light energy to a spot much smaller than
a wavelength. We focus light on a dyed probe sphere that is hidden under an
opaque layer. The light is optimally concentrated to a focus which does not
exceed the smallest focal area physically possible by more than 68%. A
comparison between the intensity enhancements of both the emission and
excitation light supports the conclusion of optimal light concentration.Comment: We corrected an ambiguous description of the focus size in our

DFR Perturbative Quantum Field theory on Quantum Space Time, and Wick Reduction
We discuss the perturbative approach a` la Dyson to a quantum field theory
with nonlocal self-interaction :phi*...*phi:, according to Doplicher,
Fredenhagen and Roberts (DFR). In particular, we show that the Wick reduction
of non locally time--ordered products of Wick monomials can be performed as
