Electroweak bremsstrahlung for wino-like Dark Matter annihilations

If the Dark Matter is the neutral Majorana component of a multiplet which is charged under the electroweak interactions of the Standard Model, its main annihilation channel is into W+W-, while the annihilation into light fermions is helicity suppressed. As pointed out recently, the radiation of gauge bosons from the initial state of the annihilation lifts the suppression and opens up an s-wave contribution to the cross section. We perform the full tree-level calculation of Dark Matter annihilations, including electroweak bremsstrahlung, in the context of an explicit model corresponding to the supersymmetric wino. We find that the fermion channel can become as important as the di-boson one. This result has significant implications for the predictions of the fluxes of particles originating from Dark Matter annihilations.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. Fire in the Operating Room During Hypospadias Repair

Fire in the operating room (OR) is a very distressful and shocking occurrence with potential dramatic consequences. Despite safety rules and rigorous recommendations, such unintentional events do occur every so often. Notably, the vast majority of cases have been reported in the adult population, with very few pediatric cases described to date. Herein, we report on a 16-month-old boy undergoing reconstructive surgery for penoscrotal hypospadias, who experienced an OR fire most likely related to the use of alcohol-based solution ignited by monopolar electrocautery

Rescue excavations at 28-32 rue du Général Féry, Châlons-en-Champagne (Marne), led to the discovery of a limestone statuette in an incineration grave. The statuette is unusual for a burial context on account of its material and size, but also for its subject, which is uncommon in the iconography in its current state of knowledge.

    Mid-Infrared High-Contrast Imaging of HD 114174 B : An Apparent Age Discrepancy in a "Sirius-Like" Binary System

We present new observations of the faint "Sirius-like" companion discovered to orbit HD 114174. Previous attempts to image HD 114174 B at mid-infrared wavelengths using NIRC2 at Keck have resulted in a non-detection. Our new L'-band observations taken with the Large Binocular Telescope and LMIRCam recover the companion (ΔL\Delta L = 10.15 ±\pm 0.15 mag, ρ\rho = 0.675'' ±\pm 0.016'') with a high signal-to-noise ratio (10 σ\sigma). This measurement represents the deepest L' high-contrast imaging detection at sub-arcsecond separations to date, including extrasolar planets. We confirm that HD 114174 B has near-infrared colors consistent with the interpretation of a cool white dwarf (JLJ-L' = 0.76 ±\pm 0.19 mag, KLK-L' = 0.64 ±\pm 0.20). New model fits to the object's spectral energy distribution indicate a temperature TeffT_{\rm eff} = 4260 ±\pm 360 K, surface gravity log g = 7.94 ±\pm 0.03, a cooling age tc_{c} \approx 7.8 Gyr, and mass MM = 0.54 ±\pm 0.01 MM_{\odot}. We find that the cooling age given by theoretical atmospheric models do not agree with the age of HD 114174 A derived from both isochronological and gyrochronological analyses. We speculate on possible scenarios to explain the apparent age discrepancy between the primary and secondary. HD 114174 B is a nearby benchmark white dwarf that will ultimately enable a dynamical mass estimate through continued Doppler and astrometric monitoring. Efforts to characterize its physical properties in detail will test theoretical atmospheric models and improve our understanding of white dwarf evolution, cooling, and progenitor masses.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letter

Initial State Radiation in Majorana Dark Matter Annihilations

The cross section for a Majorana Dark Matter particle annihilating into light fermions is helicity suppressed. We show that, if the Dark Matter is the neutral Majorana component of a multiplet which is charged under the electroweak interactions of the Standard Model, the emission of gauge bosons from the initial state lifts the suppression and allows an s-wave annihilation. The resulting energy spectra of stable Standard Model particles are importantly affected. This has an impact on indirect searches for Dark Matter.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

Objective: Internet-based guided self-help (GSH) programs increase accessibility and utilization of evidence-based treatments in binge-eating disorder (BED). We evaluated acceptance and short as well as long-term efficacy of our 8-session internet-based GSH program in a randomized clinical trial with an immediate treatment group, and two waitlist control groups, which differed with respect to whether patients received positive expectation induction during waiting or not. Method: Sixty-three patients (87% female, mean age 37.2 years) followed the eight-session guided cognitive-behavioural internet-based program and three booster sessions in a randomized clinical trial design including an immediate treatment and two waitlist control conditions. Outcomes were treatment acceptance, number of weekly binge-eating episodes, eating disorder pathology, depressiveness, and level of psychosocial functioning. Results: Treatment satisfaction was high, even though 27% of all patients dropped out during the active treatment and 9.5% during the follow-up period of 6 months. The treatment, in contrast to the waiting conditions, led to a significant reduction of weekly binge-eating episodes from 3.4 to 1.7 with no apparent rebound effect during follow-up. All other outcomes improved as well during active treatment. Email-based positive expectation induction during waiting period prior to the treatment did not have an additional beneficial effect on the temporal course and thus treatment success, of binge episodes in this study. Conclusion: This short internet-based program was clearly accepted and highly effective regarding core features of BED. Dropout rates were higher in the active and lower in the follow-up period. Positive expectations did not have an impact on treatment effects

identify the determinants of job satisfaction of the nursing staff of a public university hospital. secondary study with mixed data approach and simple and multiple linear regression. A total of 115 subjects participated in the study, 41 nurses and 74 nursing assistants and technicians. The data collection occurred in 2013 using the QST-Caism questionnaire. education, hierarchical level and workplace constitute job satisfaction determinants. However, age, gender, job and work period did not show this relationship. More educated workers held low job satisfaction if exercised not graduated nursing functions. graduated workers who perform high school functions are more unsatisfied than those who have high school function and qualification.Identify the determinants of job satisfaction of the nursing staff of a public university hospital.
