New functional biocarriers for enhancing the performance of a hybrid moving bed biofilm reactor-membrane bioreactor system

© 2016 Elsevier Ltd. In this study, new sponge modified plastic carriers for moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was developed. The performance and membrane fouling behavior of a hybrid MBBR-membrane bioreactor (MBBR-MBR) system were also evaluated. Comparing to the MBBR with plastic carriers (MBBR), the MBBR with sponge modified biocarriers (S-MBBR) showed better effluent quality and enhanced nutrient removal at HRTs of 12 h and 6 h. Regarding fouling issue of the hybrid systems, soluble microbial products (SMP) of the MBR unit greatly influenced membrane fouling. The sponge modified biocarriers could lower the levels of SMP in mixed liquor and extracellular polymeric substances in activated sludge, thereby mitigating cake layer and pore blocking resistances of the membrane. The reduced SMP and biopolymer clusters in membrane cake layer were also observed. The results demonstrated that the sponge modified biocarriers were capable of improving overall MBBR performance and substantially alleviated membrane fouling of the subsequent MBR unit

4H-SiC trench MOSFET with integrated fast recovery MPS diode

A 4H-SiC trench metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect-transistor (MOSFET) design with an integrated merged PiN Schottky (MPS) diode is proposed. The Schottky contact is embedded on the bottom of the trench structure for the first time. The low electric field in the oxide and Schottky contact surface can be achieved simultaneously using the proposed integration design which enhances the oxide reliability and reduces leakage from the Schottky diode. The integration of the MPS diode reduces the total chip area and the required number of dies compared with the conventional method of using an external Schottky diode

Dynamic graphene filters for selective gas-water-oil separation

Selective filtration of gas, water, and liquid or gaseous oil is essential to prevent possible environmental pollution and machine/facility malfunction in oil-based industries. Novel materials and structures able to selectively and efficiently filter liquid and vapor in various types of solutions are therefore in continuous demand. Here, we investigate selective gas-water-oil filtration using three-dimensional graphene structures. The proposed approach is based on the adjustable wettability of three-dimensional graphene foams. Three such structures are developed in this study; the first allows gas, oil, and water to pass, the second blocks water only, and the third is exclusively permeable to gas. In addition, the ability of three-dimensional graphene structures with a self-assembled monolayer to selectively filter oil is demonstrated. This methodology has numerous potential practical applications as gas, water, and/or oil filtration is an essential component of many industriesopen0

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Southern China is a major area for endemic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Genetic factors as well as environmental factors play a role in development of NPC. To investigate the roles of previously described carcinogen metabolism gene variants for NPC susceptibility in a Han Chinese population, we conducted a case-control study in two independent study population groups afflicted with NPC in Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces of southern China.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of <it>CYP2E1</it>-rs2031920, <it>CYP2E1</it>-rs6413432, <it>GSTP1</it>-rs947894, <it>MPO</it>-rs2333227 and <it>NQO1</it>-rs1800566 were genotyped by PCR-based RFLP, sequencing and TaqMan assay in 358 NPC cases and 629 controls (phase I cohort). Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). To confirm our results, sixteen tag SNPs for <it>GSTP1</it>, <it>MPO</it>, <it>NQO1 </it>(which 100% covered these genes), and 4 functional SNPs of <it>CYP2E1 </it>were genotyped in another cohort of 213 NPC cases and 230 controls (phase II cohort).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No significant associations in NPC risk were observed for the five polymorphisms tested in the phase I cohort. In an additional stratified analysis for phase I, there was no significant association between cases and controls in NPC high risk population (EBV/IgA/VCA positive population). Analysis of 14 tagging SNPs within the same genes in an independent phase II cohort were in agreement with no SNPs significantly associated with NPC.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results suggest that polymorphism of <it>CYP2E1</it>, <it>GSTP1</it>, <it>MPO </it>and <it>NQO1 </it>genes does not contribute to overall NPC risk in a Han Chinese in southern China.</p

Background: Outbreaks of Hand Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) have occurred in many parts of the world especially in China. We aimed to summarize the characteristics of the levels of blood glucose and white blood cell (WBC) counts in cases of HFMD in Mainland China and Taiwan, using meta-analysis based on systematic review of published articles. Methods: We systematically reviewed published studies, from the MEDLINE and WANFANG Data, about the levels of blood glucose and WBC counts in cases of HFMD until 15 th June 2011, and quantitatively summarized the characteristics of them using meta-analysis. Results: In total, 37 studies were included in this review. In Mainland China and Taiwan, generally, the average level of blood glucose, the prevalence of hyperglycemia, WBC counts and the prevalence of leukocytosis increased with the severity of the illness. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of leukocytosis between ANS (autonomic nervous system dysregulation)/PE (pulmonary edema) group and CNS (central nervous system) group, and in the average level of blood glucose between healthy controls and mild cases of HFMD. WBC counts in cases infected by EV71 were less than those in cases infected by CA16. Conclusions: our analyses indicated that blood glucose and WBC counts increased with the severity of HFMD disease, which would help doctors to manage patients efficiently
