Sociology invites us to regard knowledge as depending on their context and (social, political, practical) conditions of production. Sociologizing knowedge and the ways of knowing means that the use of knowledge for and by politics is likely to vary according to contexts. In this contribution, we first mention the specificities of the social and political Belgian context to infer some lessons relative to the place of knowledge in the development of pubic policies. We then focus on the field of education in the French-speaking part of the country and distinguish the legacy of a long history from some recent transformations. The analysis reveals a relative break in history between a still present that promotes discretion and an already present future that imposes knowledge and evaluation criteria over which the professionals of the field have a limited impact
At a time when there is much discussion about globalization and the unifying power of international organizations such as the OECD, is it not paradoxical to speculate that education systems are becoming fragmented? This article and dossier show that it is not. They argue that the fragmentation of national school systems – or the obstacles to the processes of unifying these systems – can be explained by several globalized phenomena. Some of these problematize national compromises on educational outcomes and models, while others encourage international networks of schools at a remove from the national model. Thus, each national education system now has a tendency to fragment in two respects, one of which is linked to social stratification and the other to the differentiation of educational models and projects. It is not currently possible to predict whether this fragmentation will endure and mark the end of national school systems or whether it will lead to the reconfiguration of unified systems.
Families’ freedom of choice and schools’ autonomy are two rules essential to the French-speaking education system in Belgium. In this environment, families and schools – the main protagonists in the process of splitting the pupils into schools – use logical strategies which take part in keeping a hierarchy between schools. The authors analyse those mechanisms taking the example of a deprived urban local area with twenty-three interdependent secondary schools. Their interdependencies and hierarchical positions are defined from a statistical analysis of the movements of students between the schools as well as the educational and socio-economic characteristics of school enrolments. Then the article studies how the strategies chosen by the families and the schools take into account the relative positions of the schools in the school hierarchy and contribute as such to reproducing this hierarchy structure.
Recognition of the latency-associated immediate early protein IE63 of varicella-zoster virus by human memory T-lymphocytes
peer reviewedVaricella-zoster virus (VZV) is a human alpha herpesvirus that establishes latency in sensory ganglia. Latency is characterized by the abundant expression of the immediate early protein 63 (IE63), whereas other viral proteins have not yet been detected during the quiescent phase of VZV infection. The IE63 protein is a component of the virion and is expressed very early in the infectious cycle. The IE63 protein is also expressed in skin during episodes of varicella and herpes zoster. We have evaluated the cell-mediated immune response against IE63 in naturally immune adults with a history of chickenpox, by T lymphoproliferation and cytotoxicity assays. Among donors who had T cell proliferation to unfractionated VZV Ags from infected cell extract, 59% had T cell recognition of purified IE63. The CTL response to IE63 was equivalent to CTL recognition of IE62, the major tegument component of VZV whose immunogenicity has been previously described. IgG Abs against IE63 were detected in serum from healthy immune adults. These results indicate that IE63 is an important target of immunity to VZV. T cell recognition of IE63 is likely to be involved in controlling VZV reactivation from latency
Varicella vaccination in Japan, South Korea, and Europe.
The most extensive use of varicella vaccine has been in the United States and Canada, where it is universally recommended. However, a number of other countries now have recommendations for use of the vaccine, which has been expanding in Europe and Latin America. In this article, we review information concerning varicella vaccination in Japan, where the vaccine was first developed, and in South Korea and parts of Europe. Despite the worldwide availability of an efficient vaccine, varicella vaccination policy is highly variable from country to country. The recent development of a tetravalent vaccine against measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella could modify this variability in the future. It is evident that efforts to control varicella will spread gradually to all continents
Vowel production: a potential speech biomarker for early detection of dysarthria in Parkinson’s disease
ObjectivesOur aim is to detect early, subclinical speech biomarkers of dysarthria in Parkinson’s disease (PD), i.e., systematic atypicalities in speech that remain subtle, are not easily detectible by the clinician, so that the patient is labeled “non-dysarthric.” Based on promising exploratory work, we examine here whether vowel articulation, as assessed by three acoustic metrics, can be used as early indicator of speech difficulties associated with Parkinson’s disease.Study designThis is a prospective case–control study.MethodsSixty-three individuals with PD and 35 without PD (healthy controls-HC) participated in this study. Out of 63 PD patients, 43 had been diagnosed with dysarthria (DPD) and 20 had not (NDPD). Sustained vowels were recorded for each speaker and formant frequencies were measured. The analyses focus on three acoustic metrics: individual vowel triangle areas (tVSA), vowel articulation index (VAI) and the Phi index.ResultstVSA were found to be significantly smaller for DPD speakers than for HC. The VAI showed significant differences between these two groups, indicating greater centralization and lower vowel contrasts in the DPD speakers with dysarhtria. In addition, DPD and NDPD speakers had lower Phi values, indicating a lower organization of their vowel system compared to the HC. Results also showed that the VAI index was the most efficient to distinguish between DPD and NDPD whereas the Phi index was the best acoustic metric to discriminate NDPD and HC.ConclusionThis acoustic study identified potential subclinical vowel-related speech biomarkers of dysarthria in speakers with Parkinson’s disease who have not been diagnosed with dysarthria
D2.1 - Report on Selected TRNG and PUF Principles
This report represents the final version of Deliverable 2.1 of the HECTOR work package WP2. It is a result of discussions and work on Task 2.1 of all HECTOR partners involved in WP2. The aim of the Deliverable 2.1 is to select principles of random number generators (RNGs) and physical unclonable functions (PUFs) that fulfill strict technology, design and security criteria. For example, the selected RNGs must be suitable for implementation in logic devices according to the German AIS20/31 standard. Correspondingly, the selected PUFs must be suitable for applying similar security approach. A standard PUF evaluation approach does not exist, yet, but it should be proposed in the framework of the project. Selected RNGs and PUFs should be then thoroughly evaluated from the point of view of security and the most suitable principles should be implemented in logic devices, such as Field Programmable Logic Arrays (FPGAs) and Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) during the next phases of the project
