Communicating content: development and evaluation of icons for academic document triage through visualisation and perception

This work seeks to identify key features and characteristics for the design of icons that can support the tasks of information seekers in academic document triage interfaces. Such icons are meant to act as visual links to the specific elements or sections in an academic document. We suggest that icons in triage interfaces are better able to communicate information, provide feedback and enable faster user interactions than text, particularly in mobile-based interfaces. Through investigation of visualisation and perception processes, we are able to propose five primary icon categories, the two most dominant being iconic and symbolic: iconic representations mostly apply to graphically and spatially distinct document elements (i.e. Title, Abstract, Tables and Figures), externalising the elements’ surface propositions. Symbolic representations are largely associated with elements of greater semantic value (Introduction, Conclusion, Full text and Author), drawing upon the elements’ deep propositions

The author, who is the guest editor of the present issue on American philosophy, considers the latter in an ideological, historical and universal perspective. Les pragmatistes et la nature du pragmatisme

« How to Make our Ideas Clear », the paper in which the maxim of pragmatism appeared for the first time, was written in French by its author, the American logician and philosopher, Charles S. Peirce, in 1877, and published in the Revue philosophique de la France et de l'étranger in 1879. Pragmatism was publicized by James around the beginning of the century in another way and in another tone and its success prevented the European philosophers from taking seriously the « magical » on « utilitarian » versions of the otherwise very serious « logical » theory proposed by Peirce. Linguistics has made some use of the « pragmatic » principle and philosophy does not seem to have any objection to it, although it is the very theory Peirce wanted to introduce when he wrote « How to Make our Ideas Clear », that is to say a new conception of meaning, based on action instead of intuition.C'est un article de Charles S. Mais c'est William James qui lance le mouvement au début du siècle et sur une tout autre voie que Peirce. L'accueil que firent au pragmatisme américain les philosophes européens fut à la mesure de son success prevented the European philosophers from taking seriously the « magical » or « utilitarian » versions of the otherwise very serious partisans ressemblait fort peu à l'original « logique » de Peirce. Les philosophes semblent aujourd'hui se reconcilier avec le « pragmatique » qui leur revient par le biais de la linguistique. Or ce « pragmatique » est directement issu de cette nouvelle théorie de la signification dont Peirce exposait le principe, qu'il opposait au principe cartésien, dans « Comment rendre nos idées claires », il y a cent ans.Deledalle Gérard. Peirce ne publia de son vivant aucun ouvrage philosophique. Ce ne fut pas faute d’en avoir projeté.
