Investigation of advanced counterrotation blade configuration concepts for high speed turboprop systems, task 1: Ducted propfan analysis
The time-dependent three-dimensional Euler equations of gas dynamics were solved numerically to study the steady compressible transonic flow about ducted propfan propulsion systems. Aerodynamic calculations were based on a four-stage Runge-Kutta time-marching finite volume solution technique with added numerical dissipation. An implicit residual smoothing operator was used to aid convergence. Two calculation grids were employed in this study. The first grid utilized an H-type mesh network with a branch cut opening to represent the axisymmetric cowl. The second grid utilized a multiple-block mesh system with a C-type grid about the cowl. The individual blocks were numerically coupled in the Euler solver. Grid systems were generated by a combined algebraic/elliptic algortihm developed specifically for ducted propfans. Numerical calculations were initially performed for unducted propfans to verify the accuracy of the three-dimensional Euler formulation. The Euler analyses were then applied for the calculation of ducted propfan flows, and predicted results were compared with experimental data for two cases. The three-dimensional Euler analyses displayed exceptional accuracy, although certain parameters were observed to be very sensitive to geometric deflections. Both solution schemes were found to be very robust and demonstrated nearly equal efficiency and accuracy, although it was observed that the multi-block C-grid formulation provided somewhat better resolution of the cowl leading edge region
Preliminary design study of a quiet, high flow fan (QHF) stage
Concepts selected to reduce fan generated noise in a turbofan are presented. Near-sonic flow at the fan inlet to reduce upstream propagated noise and the use of long-chord vanes to reduce downstream noise is discussed. The near-sonic condition at the rotor inlet plane was achieved by designing for high specific mass flow and by maintaining the high flow at reduced power by variable stators and variable fan exhaust nozzle. The long-chord vanes reduce response to unsteady flow. The acoustic design showed that long-chord stators would significantly reduce turbofan source noise and that other stator design parameters have no appreciable effect on noise for the spacing and chord length of the turbofan design. Four rig flow paths studied in the aerodynamic preliminary design are discussed. Noise prediction results indicate that a turbofan powered aircraft would be under federal air regulations levels without any acoustic treatment
Validating the Use of Vignettes for Subjective Threshold Scales
Comparing self-assessed indicators of subjective outcomes such as health, work disability, political efficacy, job satisfaction, etc. across countries or socio-economic groups is often hampered by the fact that different groups use systematically different response scales. Anchoring vignettes have been introduced as an effective tool to correct for such differences. This paper develops an integrated framework in which objective measurements are used to validate the vignette-based corrections. The framework is applied to vignettes and objective and subjective self-assessments of drinking behavior by students in Ireland. Model comparisons using the Akaike information criterion favor a specification with response consistency and vignette corrected response scales. Put differently, vignette based corrections appear quite effective in bringing objective and subjective measures closer together.anchoring vignettes;reporting bias;hopit model
Small Engine Technology. Task 4: Advanced Small Turboshaft Compressor (ASTC) Performance and Range Investigation
This contact had two main objectives involving both numerical and experimental investigations of a small highly loaded two-stage axial compressor designated Advanced Small Turboshaft Compressor (ASTC) winch had a design pressure ratio goal of 5:1 at a flowrate of 10.53 lbm/s. The first objective was to conduct 3-D Navier Stokes multistage analyses of the ASTC using several different flow modelling schemes. The second main objective was to complete a numerical/experimental investigation into stall range enhancement of the ASTC. This compressor was designed wider a cooperative Space Act Agreement and all testing was completed at NASA Lewis Research Center. For the multistage analyses, four different flow model schemes were used, namely: (1) steady-state ADPAC analysis, (2) unsteady ADPAC analysis, (3) steady-state APNASA analysis, and (4) steady state OCOM3D analysis. The results of all the predictions were compared to the experimental data. The steady-state ADPAC and APNASA codes predicted similar overall performance and produced good agreement with data, however the blade row performance and flowfield details were quite different. In general, it can be concluded that the APNASA average-passage code does a better job of predicting the performance and flowfield details of the highly loaded ASTC compressor
Cassiopeia A: dust factory revealed via submillimetre polarimetry
If Type-II supernovae - the evolutionary end points of short-lived, massive
stars - produce a significant quantity of dust (>0.1 M_sun) then they can
explain the rest-frame far-infrared emission seen in galaxies and quasars in
the first Gyr of the Universe. Submillimetre observations of the Galactic
supernova remnant, Cas A, provided the first observational evidence for the
formation of significant quantities of dust in Type-II supernovae. In this
paper we present new data which show that the submm emission from Cas A is
polarised at a level significantly higher than that of its synchrotron
emission. The orientation is consistent with that of the magnetic field in Cas
A, implying that the polarised submm emission is associated with the remnant.
No known mechanism would vary the synchrotron polarisation in this way and so
we attribute the excess polarised submm flux to cold dust within the remnant,
providing fresh evidence that cosmic dust can form rapidly. This is supported
by the presence of both polarised and unpolarised dust emission in the north of
the remnant, where there is no contamination from foreground molecular clouds.
The inferred dust polarisation fraction is unprecedented (f_pol ~ 30%) which,
coupled with the brief timescale available for grain alignment (<300 yr),
suggests that supernova dust differs from that seen in other Galactic sources
(where f_pol=2-7%), or that a highly efficient grain alignment process must
operate in the environment of a supernova remnant.Comment: In press at MNRAS, 10 pages, print in colou

Draft Genome Sequences of Four Saccharibacter sp. Strains Isolated from Native Bees.
The genus Saccharibacter is currently understudied, with only one described species, Saccharibacter floricola, isolated from a flower. In an effort to better understand the microbes that come in contact with native bee pollinators, we isolated and sequenced four additional strains of Saccharibacter from native bees in the genera Melissodes and Anthophora These genomes range in size from 2,104,494 to 2,316,791 bp (mean, 2,246,664 bp) and contain between 1,860 and 2,167 (mean, 2,060) protein-coding genes
Freshly Formed Dust in the Cassiopeia A Supernova Remnant as Revealed by the Spitzer Space Telescope
We performed Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph mapping observations covering
nearly the entire extent of the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant (SNR), producing
mid-infrared (5.5-35 micron) spectra every 5-10". Gas lines of Ar, Ne, O, Si, S
and Fe, and dust continua were strong for most positions. We identify three
distinct ejecta dust populations based on their continuum shapes. The dominant
dust continuum shape exhibits a strong peak at 21 micron. A line-free map of 21
micron-peak dust made from the 19-23 micron range closely resembles the [Ar
II], [O IV], and [Ne II] ejecta-line maps implying that dust is freshly formed
in the ejecta. Spectral fitting implies the presence of SiO2, Mg
protosilicates, and FeO grains in these regions. The second dust type exhibits
a rising continuum up to 21 micron and then flattens thereafter. This ``weak 21
micron'' dust is likely composed of Al2O3 and C grains. The third dust
continuum shape is featureless with a gently rising spectrum and is likely
composed of MgSiO3 and either Al2O3 or Fe grains. Using the least massive
composition for each of the three dust classes yields a total mass of 0.02
Msun. Using the most-massive composition yields a total mass of 0.054 Msun. The
primary uncertainty in the total dust mass stems from the selection of the dust
composition necessary for fitting the featureless dust as well as 70 micron
flux. The freshly formed dust mass derived from Cas A is sufficient from SNe to
explain the lower limit on the dust masses in high redshift galaxies.Comment: 8 figures: Accepted for the publication in Ap
Gaslighting Female Leadership: All Gas, No Brakes!
In this study, we asked: Does female leadership style safeguard Black female leaders against gaslighting? Between September 2023 and December 2023, we read case studies, reviewed numerous government publications and documents, and read peer-reviewed published articles and scholarly books retrieved from Google Scholar and library databases. Burn’s (1978) definition of a transformational leader is how we, too, define a leader. One definition of gaslighting stood out, and we used that definition to operationalize our investigation (Duignan, 2023). We found that when female leaders are exposed to gaslighting, they are less likely to participate in workforce leadership initiatives. Gaslighting negatively impacts female leaders’ performance; nonetheless, a few female leadership styles safeguard female leaders from the drawbacks of gaslighting. We make four recommendations that will help Black female leaders avoid the pitfalls of gaslighting
