THE 8 Li(α, n) 11 B REACTION RATE AT ASTROPHYSICAL TEMPERATURES
At temperatures (0.5-1.2) × 109 K, the 8Li + 4He → 11B+n reaction can allow for 12C and heavier element production in the framework of the inhomogeneous big bang nucleosynthesis. At temperatures (2.5-5) × 109 K, it can influence the production of seed nuclei, later burnt to heavier elements by means of rapid neutron capture reactions, during Type II supernova explosions. Previous determinations of the reaction rate show an untenable disagreement. In this work, a new reaction rate calculation is proposed for the intervals of astrophysical interest. This new recommendation turns out to be up to a factor of five larger than the most recent rate in the literature, thus enforcing the role of 8Li + 4He → 11B+n as a candidate for key astrophysical reactions. The analytical expression of the recommended reaction rate is given
Complete determination of neutron yield from 62 MeV protons on 9Be for the design of a low – power ADS
Within the European Partitioning & Transmutation research programs, infrastructures specifically dedicated to the study of fundamental reactor physics of future fast neutron-based reactors are very important. In this respect, an Accelerator Driven System low-power prototype, based on a 70 MeV proton beam impinging on a thick Beryllium converter, was recently proposed and designed within the INFN-E project. The world data on neutron yield from Be target are scarce in this proton energy range. This lack of data calls for a dedicated measurement which was performed at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud, covering a wide angular range, from 0 to 150 degrees, and an almost complete neutron energy interval, from thermal up to the beam energy. In this contribution the results are discussed together with the description of the proposed ADS facility
Study of an intrinsically safe infrastructure for training and research on nuclear technologies
Within European Partitioning & Transmutation research programs, infrastructures specifically dedicated to the study of fundamental reactor physics and engineering parameters of future fast-neutron-based reactors are very important, being some of these features not available in present zero-power prototypes. This presentation will illustrate the conceptual design of an Accelerator-Driven System with high safety standards, but ample flexibility for measurements. The design assumes as base option a 70MeV, 0.75mA proton cyclotron, as the one which will be installed at the INFN National Laboratory in Legnaro, Italy and a Beryllium target, with Helium gas as core coolant.
Safety is guaranteed by limiting the thermal power to 200 kW, with a neutron multiplication coefficient around 0.94, loading the core with fuel containing Uranium enriched at 20% inserted in a solid-lead diffuser. The small decay heat can be passively removed by thermal radiation from the vessel. Such a system could be used to study, among others, some specific aspects of neutron diffusion in lead, beam-core coupling, target cooling and could serve as a training facility
Understanding the fusion cross section among light nuclei around the Coulomb barrier
In this work we investigate fusion induced by a radioactive 8Li projectile on a 4He gas target, at center-of-mass energies between 0.6 and 5 MeV. The main result is the tendency of the dimensionless fusion cross section σπλ2 to form well visible plateaus alternated to steep rises. This is likely to be the most genuine consequence of the discrete nature of the intervening angular momenta observed so far in fusion reactions right above the Coulomb barrier. A partial-wave analysis, exclusively based on a pure quantal penetration fusion model, identifies a remarkably low-height barrier. Indeed, these plateaus allow enhanced experimental sensitivity to the fusion barrier given that the most barrier-sensitive lowest partial waves are well separated. We expect that the present results for 8Li+4He will promote further investigations of the fusion reaction mechanism between very light ions at energies much below the interaction barrier. For the moment, we believe that understanding the plateau origin in the cross section above the barrier will almost certainly be useful to corroborate the extrapolation to the important astrophysical region below the Coulomb barrier, not only in the case of the 8Li+4He fusion but also for other systems, such as the 12C+12C
Seismic assessment and finite element modelling of glazed curtain walls
Glazed curtain walls are facade systems frequently chosen in modern architecture for mid and high-rise buildings. From recent earthquakes surveys it is observed the large occurrence of non-structural components failure, such as storefronts and curtain walls, which causes sensitive economic losses and represents an hazard for occupants and pedestrians safety. In the present study, the behavior of curtain wall stick systems under seismic actions has been investigated through experimental in-plane racking tests conducted at the laboratory of the Construction Technologies Institute (ITC) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) on two full-scale aluminium/glass curtain wall test units. A finite element model has been calibrated according to experimental results in order to simulate the behavior of such components under seismic excitation. The numerical model investigates the influence of the interaction between glass panels and aluminium frame, the gasket friction and the stiffness degradation of aluminium-to-glass connections due to the high deformation level on the curtain walls behavior. This study aims to give a practical support to researchers and/or professionals who intend to numerically predict the lateral behavior of similar facade systems, so as to avoid or reduce the need of performing expensive experimental tests
Food chain information systems in medium- and small-sized slaughterhouses of central Italy and organ and carcass condemnations: A five-year survey
The flow of information between farms and slaughterhouses about animal health, is a fundamental process for modern meat
inspection. The information provided by Food Chain Information (FCI) systems in medium-small sized slaughterhouses in central Italy, focusing on the data provided on the animal’s health status, was performed through a five-year survey together with the number of organ and carcass condemnation for bovine, swine and ovine. The annual prevalence of condemnation was higher in bovine (from 10.49% in 2015 to 17.16% in 2019) than swine (from 6.39% in 2015 to 12.64% in 2019) and ovine (from 8.05% in 2019 to 8.98% in 2017), and an
overall prevalence increase was observed in bovine and swine, throughout the years. The frequent lack of Food Chain Information
(FCI) from farms to slaughterhouses should be emphasised, taking into consideration that a poor implementation of the system by
farmers, could lead to a persistent risk of disease at farm level for these two species
