Role of Parent-Teacher Partnership in Learners’ Academic Performance

Get PDF
This study was purposely conducted to develop a parent-teacher partnership program to improve learners’ academic performance in English 4 by determining learners’ academic performance, perception of the parent-child relationship, and on parental involvement in six categories as to parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision-making, and collaborating with the community. Descriptive research design was utilized through survey method wherein 24 Grade IV learners under modular distance learning modality were purposively selected as respondents. Learners’ perception on parent-child relationship showed positive relationship, while learners’ perception on parental involvement in six categories indicated high involvement. Results showed a significant relationship between the parent-child relationship and parental involvement. However, there is no significant relationship between academic performance in English on their perception of the parent-child relationship and parental involvement. The study suggested that Parent-Teacher Association officers along with teachers may conduct a classroom-based program to assist learners at risk in English. Teachers may also review the parent-teacher partnership program so that it will be aligned with the learning needs of their students

Proteolytic properties of Funastrum clausum latex

Get PDF
As part of a screening of latex endopeptidases from plants growing in Argentina, the presence of proteolytic activity in the latex of Funastrum clausum stems is reported. The proteases present in the crude extract showed the main characteristics of the cysteine proteolytic class, i.e. optimum pH at alkaline range, isoelectric point (pI) higher than 9.0, and inhibition of proteolytic activity by thiol blocking reagents. A remarkable thermal stability was also evident in the crude extract. Endosterolytic preference tried on p-nitrophenyl esters of N-a-carbobenzoxy-L-amino acids was higher for the alanine, asparagine and tyrosine derivatives. Preliminary peptidase purification by two-step ionic exchange showed the presence of two proteolytic fractions with molecular masses of approximately 24.0 kDa according to SDS-PAGE.Centro de Investigación de Proteínas Vegetale

Rational Design of a Biocatalyst Based on Immobilized CALB onto Nanostructured SiO2

The adsorption of the lipase B from Candida antarctica (CALB) over nanostructured SiO2 (Ns SiO2 from now on) with and without the addition of polyols (sorbitol and glycerol) was investigated. The isotherms of adsorption made it possible to establish that the maximum dispersion limit was 0.029 µmol of protein per surface area unit of Ns SiO2 (29.4 mg per 100 mg of support), which was reached in 30 min of exposure. The studies through SDS-PAGE of the immobilization solutions and infrared spectroscopy of the prepared solids determined that CALB (from a commercial extract) is selectively adsorbed, and its secondary structure distribution is thus modified. Its biocatalytic activity was corroborated through the kinetic resolution of rac-ibuprofen. Conversions of up to 70% and 52% enantiomeric excess toward S-ibuprofen in 24 h of reaction at 45 °C were achieved. The biocatalytic performance increased with the increase in protein loading until it leveled off at 0.021 µmol.m−2, reaching 0.6 µmol.min−1. The biocatalyst containing the lipase at the maximum dispersion limit and co-adsorbed polyols presented the best catalytic performance in the kinetic resolution of rac-ibuprofen, an improved thermal resistance (up to 70 °C), and stability under long-term storage (more than 2 years).Fil: Llerena Suster, Carlos Rafael. Sodium tetrathionate effect on papain purification from different Carica papaya latex crude extracts

Papain from latex of Carica papaya was purified up to matrix-assisted laser desorption= ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry homogeneity by salt precipitation from two different crude extract sources: a refined preparation obtained in our laboratory and a commercial one. Sodium tetrathionate was tested in the purification process to preserve the enzymatic activity of the peptidase. Purification was checked by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and cation exchange chromatography, using commercial pure papain as standard for a rapid comparison. The best purification yields (3.4%) were obtained in presence of 30 mM sodium tetrathionate for the crude extract prepared in our laboratory. The described purification method proved to be robust and reliable to obtain pure papain on a preparative scale.Centro de Investigación de Proteínas Vegetale
