The territory roughly delimitated by the rivers Dnipro, Sož and Desna, geo-politically set between Ukraine, Belarus’ and not far from the Russian Federation, presents a particularly interesting language situation. In this geo-dialectal “triangle” coexist and interact local dialects – also known as Ukrainian-Belarusian ‘transitional’ dialects – three standard languages (i.e. Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian), and various forms of language mix. Украинско-русская смешанная речь “суржик” в системе взаимодействия украинского и русского языков

The question of different forms of real and/or presumed mixed speech, a consequence of the interaction between Ukrainian and Russian and widely known as “Suržyk,” remains central in much of contemporary Ukrainian and, more widely, East Slavic sociolinguistic and language contact research. This article pursues a twofold aim: first, I intend to reaffirm my personal hypothesis on the formation process of this mixed speech, which has at times been cited without attribution in the scholarly literature. Second, the paper aims to examine the functioning of Ukrainian-Russian Suržyk within a broader sociolinguistic framework that takes into account other forms of language interaction. Ukrainian-Russian mixed speech in fact has to be assessed and separated from other factors, such as the Ukrainian variety of Russian, dialects, etc. This approach has rarely been applied in previous studies on the topic. The role played by current language ideology is a further essential aspect in establishing which language elements should be attributed to Ukrainian-Russian Suržik. This undoubtedly affects the average speaker’s judgment about the degree of authenticity of Ukrainian forms. One can note a tendency to restrict the synonymic potential of Ukrainian in favor of lexemes and constructions that are dissimilar to Russian. This situation tends to alter the language consciousness of younger generations of Ukrainian speakers, who are likely to perceive as Russian (and therefore part of the Ukrainian-Russian mix) elements that are in fact authentic Ukrainian speech elements. These and other related aspects will be the object of my discussion.Вопрос о такой форме смешанной украинско-русской речи, как “суржик”, занимает существенное место в многочисленных социолингвистических исследованиях и в работах о восточнославянских языковых контактах. Per una descrizione linguistica dell’ucraino

Ukrainian Studies have undoubtedly assisted at a rapid international proliferation in the last decades. Outside Ukraine, Austro-German and North American scholars have played an essential role in popularizing Ukrainian linguistic and sociolinguistic issues. The same cannot be said for the Italian Slavistic and Ukrainistic tradition, where, notwithstanding consistent contributions on Ukrainian culture, literature, history, language history and translation, papers devoted to linguistic issues and/or aimed at a formal description of the Ukrainian language are almost inexistent. Even among Italian linguists, and despite the large presence of Ukrainian communities in Italy, very little is known about this language. For the reasons just expressed, we undertake, in this article, the task to provide a preliminary description of Ukrainian aimed at Italian academic readers

A Fatal Case of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome After Paralytic Bowel in a Patient Taking Antiparkinson Medication

Objectives: We report a fatal case of neuroleptic malignant-like syndrome, which occurred as a consequence of paralytic bowel in a 72-year-old woman on treatment with antiparkinson medication. Case description: Contrast enhanced computerized tomography of the chest and abdomen demonstrated the presence of paralytic bowel. Results: The patient died. Conclusions: Physicians involved in the treatment of patients affected by Parkinson’s disease should take into consideration the possibility of dopaminergic drug malabsorption due to paralytic bowel as a possible cause of neuroleptic malignant-like syndrome

The role of ceus in the evaluation of thyroid cancer : From diagnosis to local staging

Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.Ultrasound often represents the first diagnostic step for thyroid nodule evaluation in clinical practice, but baseline US alone is not always effective enough to achieve thyroid nodule characterization. In the last decades new ultrasound techniques, such as CEUS, have been introduced to evaluate thyroid parenchyma as recommended by EFSUMB guidelines, for use in clinical research field, although its role is not yet clear. Several papers show the potential utility of CEUS in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant thyroid nodules and in the analysis of lymph node involvement in neoplastic pathology. Therefore, we carried out an evaluation of the literature concerning the role of CEUS in three specific areas: the characterization of the thyroid nodule, the evaluation of minimally invasive treatment and loco‐regional staging of the lymph node in proven thyroid cancer. According to evidence reported, CEUS can also play an operative role in nodular thyroid pathology as it is able to guide ablation procedures on thyroid nodule and metastatic lymph nodes, to assess the radicality of surgery, to evaluate disease relapse at the level of the margins of ablated regions and to monitor the clinical evolution of necrotic areas in immediate post‐treatment setting.publishersversionPeer reviewe
