    Impact of soil management on the functional activity of microbial communities associated to cork oak rhizosphere

    The microbial ecology of cork oak rhizosphere was investigated using the Biolog community level physiological profile (CLPP) that provides a unique metabolic fingerprint helpful for the characterization of complex microbial communities. Microbial populations from the rhizosphere of cork oak plants growing at three different sites within the same area were characterized using CLPP and compared. The sites were distinguished by a different soil management under the tree cover and, in general terms, by a different anthropogenic impact. The comparison of metabolic fingerprints of the different microbial populations showed the existence of a relationship between general microbial activity and functional biodiversity in the rhizosphere and the level of anthropogenic impact. Particularly the presence of grazing animals, soil tillage and fire could be identified as the main factors affecting both the general microbial activity and the structure of microbial populations from cork oak rhizospheres

    Hang up on stereotypes: Domestic violence and an anti‐abuse helpline campaign

    We estimate the effectiveness of a government-led anti-domestic-abuse campaign launched in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic on the number of calls to the Italian domestic violence helpline. In the week after the start of the campaign, we document a sharp increase in the number of calls. By exploiting geographical variation in the exposure to the campaign ads aired on public TV networks, we find that greater exposure is associated with an increase in the number of calls after the launch of the campaign. However, the effectiveness of the media campaign is hindered in areas where gender stereotypes are stronger

    Influence of the catalyst support on the steam reforming performance of toluene as tar model compound

    The large amount of tar produced along with the syngas during biomass gasification is one of the major obstacle for the diffusion of gasifiers at industrial scale. Catalytic cracking and reforming are the most suitable processes for the transformation of tar into lighter gases. The selection of suitable catalysts is a critical step. The catalysts must own high activity and high resistance to deactivation for coke deposition. In this work the effect of two different supports, mayenite and aluminium oxide, on the activity of the nickel was investigated in the steam reforming of toluene that was used as tar model compound. In particular, the performed experimentations aimed to test the mayenite in terms of improvement of resistance to carbon deposition in conditions similar to those of gasification reactors. The obtained results indicate that Ni /mayenite catalyst needs higher temperature to activate and leads to lower value of toluene conversion with respect to Ni / alumina. However, mayenite, which is known from literature to have higher resistance to coke deposition due to the presence of free oxygens in the lattice which oxidize the coke deposited on the catalyst surface showed higher resistance to deactivation especially for low steam to carbon ratios

    Preliminary microbiological and chemical characterisation of edible goat's rennet, a unique product of Sardinian food tradition

    The edible goat rennet (EGR) namely Caggiu de crabittu, is a traditional Sardinian foodstuff deriving from the stomach of a weaned (breastfed) kid whose edible part is represented by the milk coagulated inside the abomasum that, before consumption, is subjected to a suitable ripening time. In this study, a preliminary investigation into the microbiological characteristics and physicochemical parameters of different EGRs manufactured by distinct Sardinian farms was conducted. Results showed that the edible goat rennet was free of spoilage/pathogenic bacteria and was characterised by a significant presence (6–7 log cfu/g) of mesophilic lactic acid bacteria (i.e. Lactococcus lactis, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus brevis) and Enterococci. Oleic, linolenic, palmitic and myristic acids were the most abundant free fatty acids (FFA) in all samples, while both caprylic and butyric acid contents resulted the lowest. Long chain FFA (≥C18:0) represented about 50% of total FFA. Among the polyunsaturated FFA, high content of linoleic (C18:2n-6) and alpha-linolenic (C18:3n-3) acids have been detected. In this study, EGR is shown to be microbiologically safe, with a high number of live lactic bacteria and an FFA content that is attractive from a nutritional point of view.Highlights Edible goat's rennet (EGR) resulted microbiologically safe with a high number of viable mesophilic lactic acid bacteria.     Estimating the Isotopic Altitude Gradient for Hydrogeological Studies in Mountainous Areas: Are the Low-Yield Springs Suitable? Insights from the Northern Apennines of Italy

    Several prior studies investigated the use of stable isotopes of water in hydrogeological applications, most on a local scale and often involving the isotopic gradient (evaluated by exploiting the so-called altitude effect), calculated on the basis of rainwater isotopes. A few times, this gradient has been obtained using the stable isotopic contents of low-yield springs in a limited time series. Despite the fact that this method has been recognized by the hydrogeological community, marked differences have been observed with respect to the mean stable isotopes content of groundwater and rainwater. The present investigation compares the stable isotopic signatures of 23 low-yield springs discharging along two transects from the Tyrrhenian sea to the Po Plain of Italy, evaluates the different isotopic gradients and assesses their distribution in relation to some climatic and topographic conditions. Stable isotopes of water show that groundwater in the study area is recharged by precipitation and that the precipitation regime in the eastern portion of the study area is strongly controlled by a shadow effect caused by the Alps chain on the air masses from central Europe. Stable isotopes (in particular the d18O and deuterium excess (d-excess) contents together with the obtained isotopic gradients) allow us to identify in the study area an opposite oriented orographic effect and a different provenance of the air masses. When the windward slope is located on the Tyrrhenian side, the precipitation shows a predominant oceanic origin; when the windward slope moves to the Adriatic side, the precipitation is characterized by a continental origin. The main results of this study confirm the usefulness of low-yield springs and the need for a highly detailed survey-scale hydrological investigation in the mountainous context

    Artificial Intelligence and Public Health: Evaluating ChatGPT Responses to Vaccination Myths and Misconceptions.

    Artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, are the subject of intense debate regarding their possible applications in contexts such as health care. This study evaluates the Correctness, Clarity, and Exhaustiveness of the answers provided by ChatGPT on the topic of vaccination. The World Health Organization's 11 "myths and misconceptions" about vaccinations were administered to both the free (GPT-3.5) and paid version (GPT-4.0) of ChatGPT. The AI tool's responses were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively, in reference to those myth and misconceptions provided by WHO, independently by two expert Raters. The agreement between the Raters was significant for both versions (p of K < 0.05). Overall, ChatGPT responses were easy to understand and 85.4% accurate although one of the questions was misinterpreted. Qualitatively, the GPT-4.0 responses were superior to the GPT-3.5 responses in terms of Correctness, Clarity, and Exhaustiveness (Δ = 5.6%, 17.9%, 9.3%, respectively). The study shows that, if appropriately questioned, AI tools can represent a useful aid in the health care field. However, when consulted by non-expert users, without the support of expert medical advice, these tools are not free from the risk of eliciting misleading responses. Moreover, given the existing social divide in information access, the improved accuracy of answers from the paid version raises further ethical issues
