Supersymmetric Strings and Waves in D=3, N=2 Matter Coupled Gauged Supergravities

We construct new 1/2 supersymmetric solutions in D=3, N=2, matter coupled, U(1) gauged supergravities and study some of their properties. In the most general case they represent a string superposed with gravitational and Chern-Simons electromagnetic waves. The waves are attached to the string and the solution satisfies an electromagnetic self-duality relation. When the sigma model is non-compact it interpolates between an asymptotically Kaigorodov space and a naked singularity. For the compact sigma model there is a regular horizon with the Kaigorodov geometry and asymptotically it is either Minkowskian or a pp-wave. When the sigma manifold is flat our solutions describe either AdS_3 or Kaigorodov space or a pp-wave in AdS_3.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure, v2:a reference added, minor improvement

Experimental evaluation of polycrystalline diamond tool geometries while drilling carbon fiber reinforced plastics

    Get PDF
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) drills are commonly employed in carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) drilling to satisfy hole quality conditions with an acceptable tool life and productivity. Despite their common use in industry, only a small number of studies have been reported on drilling CFRPs with PCD drills. In this study, drilling performances of three different PCD drill designs are investigated experimentally using thrust force, torque, and hole exit quality measurements. Results show that work material properties, drilling conditions, and drill design should all be considered together during the selection of process parameters, and the relationships among these factors are quite complex

A Mechanistic Approach to Investigate Drilling of UD-CFRP Laminates with PCD Drills

Cataloged from PDF version of article.Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) possess desirable material properties that satisfy the aerospace industry's high strength to weight ratio objective. Therefore, CFRPs are commonly used in structural parts, either alone or together with aluminum and titanium alloys. Drilling of CFRPs has been studied extensively in the literature in recent years, with special emphasis on process parameters and delamination. This study identifies mechanical properties of uni-directional CFRPs through drilling tests. Drilling of uni-directional CFRP plates with and without pilot holes has been performed, and cutting and edge force coefficients are identified. A polycrystalline diamond (PCD) drill was used in tests since this type of drill is commonly used in practice. Finally, validation tests on multi directional CFRP laminates have been performed and good results have been obtained. (C) 2014 CIRP

It is observed that the interest rate-exchange rate nexus in the Turkish economy appeared in the process of financial liberalization has formed a fragile structure and that this situation has triggered the economic crises along with the rising of the country’s risk premium. In this context, the attentions have been drawn up on the crises which were led by the artificial welfare increases created by the gap between interest rate and exchange rate, and up on the unsustainability of artificially appreciated national currency with high interest rates in the economy.Economic crises, Currency-balance of payment crises, Financial-banking crises, Early warning systems, exchange rate pressure index, Turkish economy, Logit model, Probit model

Milling force modelling of multidirectional carbon fiber reinforced polymer laminates

    Get PDF
Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) usage in the aerospace industry has been steadily increasing due to its superior material properties such as high strength, low weight, high resistance to corrosion, and a low thermal expansion coefficient. In addition, CFRP parts are produced near-net-shape, a process that eliminates rough machining operations. However, machining operations such as drilling, side milling, and slotting are still necessary to give the CFRP parts their final shape. A majority of the studies on machining of CFRP laminates are on drilling. The number of studies on milling of CFRPs is quite limited. In this study, a mechanistic cutting force model for milling CFRPs is proposed based on experimentally collected cutting force data during slot milling of unidirectional CFRP laminates using a polycrystalline diamond cutter. Cutting force coefficients in radial and tangential directions are calculated as a function of fiber cutting angle. The mechanistic model is shown to be capable of predicting cutting forces during milling of multidirectional CFRP laminates and capable of investigating stability of machining. © 2012 The Authors

Purpose: To investigate the total polyphenolic and flavonoid contents, antioxidant power and cytotoxic activity of ethanol extracts of Turkish propolis (EEP).Methods: The total polyphenolic and flavonoid contents of EEP were determined by spectrometric methods. Antioxidant power and cytotoxic activity of EEP were evaluated using ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and MTT assays, respectively. Results: The total polyphenolic and flavonoid contents, and FRAP value of EEP were 124.6 ± 1.5 mg gallic acid/g sample dry weight , 42.0 ± 0.8 mg quercetin/g sample dry weight and 311.0 ± 2.5 mg trolox/g sample dry weight, respectively. EEP exhibited powerful cytotoxic effects against the five human cancer cell lines. The highest cytotoxic activity of Turkish EEP was demonstrated on PC-3 cell line (IC50 = 20.7±3.4 μg/mL).Conclusion: The results demonstrate that EEP is a good source of antioxidant and a natural antitumor agent capable  of reducing cancer cell proliferation. Keywords: Propolis, Polyphenols, Cytotoxic effect, Cancer cell lines, Antioxidant activity Tropical Journal of  Pharmaceutical Research is indexed by Science Citation Index (SciSearch)

    AdSS_5 Brane World Cosmology

The gravitational equations of the 5-dimensional analogue of the AdSS space-time, where all the matter fields are confined on the 3-brane are examined. The most general solutions are established in the generic case of a non-Z_2-symmetric bulk. Constraining these solutions we derive a number of remarkable metrics widely investigated in the literature. Finally, we make many important conclusions about the viability of the presented scenario and cosmology.Comment: JHEP file, 8 pages, v5: Corrected typo

Intersecting S-Brane Solutions of D=11 Supergravity

We construct all possible orthogonally intersecting S-brane solutions in 11-dimensions corresponding to standard supersymmetric M-brane intersections. It is found that the solutions can be obtained by multiplying the brane and the transverse directions with appropriate powers of two hyperbolic functions of time. This is the S-brane analog of the ``harmonic function rule''. The transverse directions can be hyperbolic, flat or spherical. We also discuss some properties of these solutions.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, a reference adde
