    Public Tolerance of a Suburban Deer Herd: Implications for Control

    Suburban deer populations have been increasing in the eastern U.S., resulting in deer-human conflicts that can not always be resolved by a traditional management approach. Professionals responsible for management of deer damage (herd control and extension education) need information on the extent and nature of deer damage in suburban situations. Attitudes of suburban residential property owners about wildlife in general and deer in particular must be identified so that control measures that are socially acceptable as well as biologically feasible can be formulated. People\u27s tolerance of deer damage and their propensity for undertaking on-site preventive measures need to be analyzed. Residents of Islip (Long Island), New York who live in the vicinity of the Seatuck National Wildlife Refuge were surveyed in spring 1985 to determine their experiences with Refuge deer. Damage to ornamental plants totalled $28,000 for the preceding year, but people generally enjoyed having deer in their neighborhood, and tolerated considerable damage. They were more concerned with the potential for transmission of Lyme disease by deer. Residents were generally in agreement with the concept of managing wildlife as a renewable resource, but they generally opposed sport or meat hunting, which might present a potential barrier to herd control. Most residents did not want a herd reduction, but this situation could change if the deer population were to increase substantially or if deer are found to be a key link in transmission of Lyme disease to humans. Implications of these findings are discussed relative to deer herd control and extension education, which might serve as complementary components of a program directed at alleviating deer damage

    Nationwide trends and the influence of age and gender in the in-patient care of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma in Germany between 2010 and 2020

    This study analyzes nationwide trends in HCC hospitalizations focusing on interventional liver-directed treatments and the influence of age and gender. Using data from the German Federal Statistical Office all hospitalizations for HCC between 2010 and 2020 were included. Uni- and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify variables independently associated with the use of liver-directed therapies. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, data from 2020 were analyzed separately. A total of 134,713 hospitalizations (2010–2019) were included, increasing by 3.4% annually (12,707 to 13,143). The mean in-hospital stay (−15.0% [7.2 to 6.1 days]) and mortality (−23.2% [6.8 to 5.2%]) decreased while transarterial, surgical, and percutaneous ablative interventions increased by 38.6, 31.5, and 19.3%, respectively. In-hospital mortality was 7.7% in admissions with surgical treatment, while it was 0.6 and 0.5% for transarterial and percutaneous interventions. Mortality was higher in females (6.2 vs. 5.7%). Females (OR 0.89 [0.86,0.91], p < 0.001) and patients ≥80 years (OR 0.81 [0.79,0.84], p < 0.001) were less likely to receive liver-directed treatments. Liver-directed therapies were increasingly performed while in-hospital mortality and in-hospital stay decreased. Minimally invasive approaches showed lower mortality, shorter in-hospital stay, and lower costs compared to surgery. Proportionately, more women and older patients were hospitalized, receiving fewer liver-directed treatments while their mortality was higher

    Matera Laser Ranging Observatory (MLRO): An overview

    The Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) is currently under negotiation with the Bendix Field Engineering Corporation (BFEC) of the Allied Signal Aerospace Company (ASAC) to build a state-of-the-art laser ranging observatory for the Centro di Geodesia Spaziale, in Matera, Italy. The contract calls for the delivery of a system based on a 1.5 meter afocal Cassegrain astronomical quality telescope with multiple ports to support a variety of experiments for the future, with primary emphasis on laser ranging. Three focal planes, viz. Cassegrain, Coude, and Nasmyth will be available for these experiments. The open telescope system will be protected from dust and turbulence using a specialized dome which will be part of the building facilities to be provided by ASI. The fixed observatory facility will be partitioned into four areas for locating the following: laser, transmit/receive optics, telescope/dome enclosure, and the operations console. The optical tables and mount rest on a common concrete pad for added mechanical stability. Provisions will be in place for minimizing the effects of EMI, for obtaining maximum cleanliness for high power laser and transmit optics, and for providing an ergonomic environment fitting to a state-of-the-art multipurpose laboratory. The system is currently designed to be highly modular and adaptable for scaling or changes in technology. It is conceived to be a highly automated system with superior performance specifications to any currently operational system. Provisions are also made to adapt and accommodate changes that are of significance during the course of design and integration

    Improved thermal sensitivity using virtual monochromatic imaging derived from photon counting detector CT data sets: ex vivo results of CT-guided cryoablation in porcine liver

    Purpose To investigate differences in thermal sensitivity of virtual monoenergetic imaging (VMI) series generated from photon-counting detector (PCD) CT data sets, regarding their use to improve discrimination of the ablation zone during percutaneous cryoablation. Materials and Methods CT-guided cryoablation was performed using an ex vivo model of porcine liver on a PCD-CT system. The ablation zone was imaged continuously for 8 min by acquiring a CT scan every 5 s. Tissue temperature was measured using fiberoptic temperature probes placed parallel to the cryoprobe. CT-values and noise were measured at the tip of the temperature probes on each scan and on VMI series from 40 to 130 keV. Correlation of CT-values and temperature was assessed using linear regression analyses. Results For the whole temperature range of [− 40, + 20] °C, we observed a linear correlation between CT-values and temperature in reference 70 keV images (R2 = 0.60, p < 0.001) with a thermal sensitivity of 1.4HU/°C. For the most dynamic range of [− 15, + 20] °C, the sensitivity increased to 2.4HU/°C (R2 = 0.50, p < 0.001). Using VMI reconstructions, the thermal sensitivity increased from 1.4 HU/°C at 70 keV to 1.5, 1.7 and 2.0HU/°C at 60, 50 and 40 keV, respectively (range [− 40, + 20] °C). For [− 15, + 20]°C, the thermal sensitivity increased from 2.4HU/°C at 70 keV to 2.5, 2.6 and 2.7HU/°C at 60, 50 and 40 keV, respectively. Both CT-values and noise also increased with decreasing VMI keV-levels. Conclusion During CT-guided cryoablation of porcine liver, low-keV VMI reconstructions derived from PCD-CT data sets exhibit improved thermal sensitivity being highest between + 20 and − 15 °C

    Information is one of an organization's most important assets. For this reason the development and maintenance of an integrated information system environment is one of the most important functions within a large organization. The Integrated Information Systems Evolution Environment (IISEE) project has as one of its primary goals a computerized solution to the difficulties involved in the development of integrated information systems. To develop such an environment a thorough understanding of the enterprise's information needs and requirements is of paramount importance. This document is the current release of the research performed by the Integrated Development Support Environment (IDSE) Research Team in support of the IISEE project. Research indicates that an integral part of any information system environment would be multiple modeling methods to support the management of the organization's information. Automated tool support for these methods is necessary to facilitate their use in an integrated environment. An integrated environment makes it necessary to maintain an integrated database which contains the different kinds of models developed under the various methodologies. In addition, to speed the process of development of models, a procedure or technique is needed to allow automatic translation from one methodology's representation to another while maintaining the integrity of both. The purpose for the analysis of the modeling methods included in this document is to examine these methods with the goal being to include them in an integrated development support environment. To accomplish this and to develop a method for allowing intra-methodology and inter-methodology model element reuse, a thorough understanding of multiple modeling methodologies is necessary. Currently the IDSE Research Team is investigating the family of Integrated Computer Aided Manufacturing (ICAM) DEFinition (IDEF) languages IDEF(0), IDEF(1), and IDEF(1x), as well as ENALIM, Entity Relationship, Data Flow Diagrams, and Structure Charts, for inclusion in an integrated development support environment

    Coronary artery disease in patients hospitalized for peripheral artery disease: a nationwide analysis of 1.8 million patients

    Purpose: Coronary artery disease (CAD) and peripheral artery disease (PAD) are highly prevalent in society. This nationwide analysis aimed to evaluate the trends of in-hospital treatment of patients admitted due to PAD with and without concomitant CAD, to determine the prevalence and risk factors of concomitant CAD in patients with PAD. Methods: Using data from the German Federal Statistical Office, we included all admissions for PAD (with and without concomitant CAD) in Germany between 2009 and 2018. Baseline patient characteristics, outcomes and comorbidities were analyzed. Elixhauser comorbidity groups and the linear van Walraven comorbidity score (vWs) were calculated to assess the comorbidity burden. Results: Of all 1,793,517 patients hospitalized for PAD, a total of 21.8% (390,259) had concomitant CAD, increasing from 18.6% in 2009 to 24.4% in 2018. Patients with accompanying CAD showed higher in-hospital mortality (3.7 vs. 2.6%), more major amputations (9.0 vs. 7.7%) and more comorbidities (Elixhauser score: 4.2 vs. 3.2 and vWs: 9.1 vs. 6.1), resulting in higher costs (median: EUR 4541 vs. EUR 4268 per case). More advanced stages of PAD were associated with multi-vessel CAD (10% of all patients with PAD Fontaine IV showed 3-vessel CAD) and the prevalence of multi-vessel CAD increased predominantly in patients with advanced PAD. Conclusion: One in four patients hospitalized for PAD had concomitant CAD, showing an increase over time with an additional medical and economic burden for hospitals compared with patients without CAD
