Unified modelling of the thermoelectric properties in SrTiO3
Thermoelectric materials are opening a promising pathway to address energy
conversion issues governed by a competition between thermal and electronic
transport. Improving the efficiency is a difficult task, a challenge that
requires new strategies to unearth optimized compounds. We present a theory of
thermoelectric transport in electron doped SrTiO3, based on a realistic tight
binding model that includes relevant scattering processes. We compare our
calculations against a wide panel of experimental data, both bulk and thin
films. We find a qualitative and quantitative agreement over both a wide range
of temperatures and carrier concentrations, from light to heavily doped.
Moreover, the results appear insensitive to the nature of the dopant La, B, Gd
and Nb. Thus, the quantitative success found in the case of SrTiO3, reveals an
efficient procedure to explore new routes to improve the thermoelectric

Geotraceability: an innovative concept to enhance conventional traceability in the agri-food chain
With the globalization of trade, people have become enlightened and demanding consumers as regards the origin of their food and the environment in which it is produced. The concept of geotraceability described in this article responds to that requirement by combining geographical information with conventional traceability data. The inclusion of geographical information relating to the environment of the production plots is based not only on exploiting some functionalities of spatial analysis tools that exist in geographical information systems (GIS) but also on developing specific tools such as a geoidentifier and geoindicators. This article also describes the characteristics and methods of implementing a geographical information management system linked with traceability information. Lastly, the potential for using geotraceability systems in supply chains is analyzed, in particular for consumer warnings in cases of food crisis and assistance for certification of differentiated quality agricultural products
Groupoids and an index theorem for conical pseudo-manifolds
We define an analytical index map and a topological index map for conical
pseudomanifolds. These constructions generalize the analogous constructions
used by Atiyah and Singer in the proof of their topological index theorem for a
smooth, compact manifold . A main ingredient is a non-commutative algebra
that plays in our setting the role of . We prove a Thom isomorphism
between non-commutative algebras which gives a new example of wrong way
functoriality in -theory. We then give a new proof of the Atiyah-Singer
index theorem using deformation groupoids and show how it generalizes to
conical pseudomanifolds. We thus prove a topological index theorem for conical
pseudomanifolds
'Mine's a Pint of Bitter': Performativity, gender, class and representations of authenticity in real-ale tourism
Leisure choices are expressive of individual agency around the maintenance of taste, boundaries, identity and community. This research paper is part of a wider project designed to assess the social and cultural value of real ale to tourism in the north of England. This paper explores the performativity of real-ale tourism and debates about belonging in northern English real-ale communities. The research combines an ethnographic case study of a real-ale festival with semi-structured interviews with organisers and volunteers, northern English real-ale brewers and real-ale tourists visiting the festival. It is argued that real-ale tourism, despite its origins in the logic of capitalism, becomes a space where people can perform Habermasian, communicative leisure, and despite the contradictions of preferring some capitalist industries over others on the basis of their perceived smaller size and older age, real-ale fans demonstrate agency in their performativity
Popular music, psychogeography, place identity and tourism: The case of Sheffield
Tourism and cultural agencies in some English provincial cities are promoting their popular music âheritageâ and, in some cases, contemporary musicians through the packaging of trails, sites, âiconicâ venues and festivals. This article focuses on Sheffield, a âpost-industrialâ northern English city which is drawing on its associations with musicians past and present in seeking to attract tourists. This article is based on interviews with, among others, recording artists, promoters, producers and venue managers, along with reflective observational and documentary data. Theoretical remarks are made on the representations of popular musicians through cultural tourism strategies, programmes and products and also on the ways in which musicians convey a âpsychogeographicalâ sense of place in the âsoundscapeâ of the city
Vascular Responses to High-Intensity Battling Rope Exercise between the Sexes
The purpose of the study was to assess high-intensity battling rope exercise (HI-BRE) on hemodynamics, pulse wave reflection and arterial stiffness during recovery and between sexes. Twenty-three young, healthy resistance-trained individuals (men: n = 13; women: n = 10) were assessed for all measures at Rest, as well as 10-, 30-, and 60-minutes following HI-BRE. A one-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze the effects of HI-BRE across time (Rest, 10, 30, and 60-minutes) on all dependent variables. Significant main effects were analyzed using paired t-tests with a Sidak correction factor. Significance was accepted a priori at p 0.05. There were significant reductions in hemodynamic measures of diastolic blood pressure (BP) in women, but not men following HI-BRE at 30 minutes. Further, measures of pulse wave reflection, specifically those of the augmentation index (AIx) and wasted left ventricular energy (ÎEw), were significantly increased in both men and women for 60 minutes, but changes were significantly attenuated in women suggesting less ventricular work. There were also significant increases in arterial stiffness in regard to the aorta and common carotid artery that were fully recovered by 30 and 60 minutes, respectively with no differences between men and women. Thus, the primary findings of this study suggest that measures of hemodynamics and pulse wave reflection are collectively altered for at least 60 minutes following HI-BRE, with women having attenuated responses compared to men
The eventization of leisure and the strange death of alternative Leeds
The communicative potential of city spaces as leisure spaces is a central assumption of political activism and the creation of alternative, counter-cultural and subcultural scenes. However, such potential for city spaces is limited by the gentrification, privatization and eventization of city centres in the wake of wider societal and cultural struggles over leisure, work and identity formation. In this paper, we present research on alternative scenes in the city of Leeds to argue that the eventization of the city centre has led to a marginalization and of alternative scenes on the fringes of the city. Such marginalization has not caused the death of alternative Leeds or political activism associated with those scenesâbut it has changed the leisure spaces (physical, political and social) in which alternative scenes contest the mainstream
Thermoelectric La-doped SrTiO3 epitaxial layers with single-crystal quality: from nanometer to micrometer and mosaicity effects
High-quality thermoelectric LaxSr1-xTiO3 (LSTO) layers (here with x = 0.2),
with thicknesses ranging from 20 nm to 700 nm, have been epitaxially grown on
SrTiO3(001) substrates by enhanced solid-source oxide molecular-beam epitaxy.
All films are atomically flat (with rms roughness < 0.2 nm), with low mosaicity
(<0.1{\deg}), and present very low electrical resistivity (<5 x 10-4 ohm.cm at
room temperature), one order of magnitude lower than commercial Nb-doped SrTiO3
single-crystalline substrate. The conservation of transport properties within
this thickness range has been confirmed by thermoelectric measurements where
Seebeck coefficients of around -60 microV/K have been found for all films,
accordingly. Finally, a correlation is given between the mosaicity and the
(thermo)electric properties. These functional LSTO films can be integrated on
Si in opto-microelectronic devices as transparent conductor, thermoelectric
elements or in non-volatile memory structures
Edging your bets: advantage play, gambling, crime and victimisation
Consumerism, industrial development and regulatory liberalisation have underpinned the ascendance of gambling to a mainstream consumption practice. In particular, the online gambling environment has been marketed as a site of âsafe risksâ where citizens can engage in a multitude of different forms of aleatory consumption. This paper offers a virtual ethnography of an online âadvantage playâ subculture. It demonstrates how advantage players have reinterpreted the online gambling landscape as an environment saturated with crime and victimisation. In this virtual world, advantage play is no longer simply an instrumental act concerned with profit accumulation to finance consumer desires. Rather, it acts as an opportunity for individuals to engage in a unique form of edgework, whereby the threat to oneâs well-being is tested through an ability to avoid crime and victimisation. This paper demonstrates how mediated environments may act as sites for edgeworking and how the potential for victimisation can be something that is actively engaged with
