The preferentially magnified active nucleus in IRAS F10214+4724 - II. Spatially resolved cold molecular gas
We present JVLA observations of the cold (CO (1-0)) molecular gas in IRAS
F10214+4724, a lensed ULIRG at z=2.3 with an obscured active nucleus. The
galaxy is spatially and spectrally well-resolved in the CO (1-0) emission line.
A CO (1-0) counter-image is detected at the 3-sigma level. Five of the 42 km/s
channels (with >5-sigma detections) are mapped back into the source plane and
their total magnification posterior PDFs sampled. This reveals a roughly linear
arrangement, tentatively a rotating disk. We derive a molecular gas mass of
M_gas = 1.2 +- 0.2 x 10^10 M_sun, assuming a ULIRG L_{CO}-to-M_{gas} conversion
ratio of \alpha = 0.8 M_sun / (K km/s pc^2) that agrees well with the derived
range of \alpha = 0.3 - 1.3 for separate dynamical mass estimates at assumed
inclinations of i = 90 - 30 degrees. Based on the AGN and CO (1-0) peak
emission positions and the lens model, we predict a distortion of the CO
Spectral Line Energy Distribution (SLED) where higher order J lines that may be
partially excited by AGN heating will be preferentially lensed owing to their
smaller solid angles and closer proximity to the AGN and therefore the cusp of
the caustic. Comparison with other lensing inversion results shows that the
narrow line region and AGN radio core in IRAS F10214+4724 are preferentially
lensed by a factor >~ 3 and 11 respectively, relative to the molecular gas
emission. This distorts the global continuum emission Spectral Energy
Distribution (SED) and suggests caution in unsophisticated uses of IRAS
F10214+4724 as an archetype high-redshift ULIRG. We explore two Large Velocity
Gradient (LVG) models, incorporating spatial CO (1-0) and (3-2) information and
present tentative evidence for an extended, low excitation cold gas component
that implies that the total molecular gas mass in IRAS F10214+4724 is a factor

Therapeutic Homework to Support Recovery From Severe Mental Illness
Therapeutic homework refers to activities that clients complete between their visits with mental health workers. The aim of such homework is to facilitate progress toward h\u27eatment goals. There is an increasing body of research indicating that homework completion is associated with improved outcomes of psychotherapy across a wide range of clinical disorders (such as depression and anxiety). However, there is limited research into the role of homework in mental health case management for people with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia
Acceptance and commitment therapy delivered in a dyad after a severe traumatic brain injury: a feasibility study
Objective:
There is a high prevalence of complex psychological distress after a traumatic brain injury but limited evidence of effective interventions. We examined the feasibility of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy after a severe traumatic brain injury using the criteria, investigating a therapeutic effect, and reviewing the acceptability of measures, treatment protocol, and delivery method (in a dyad of two clients and a therapist).
Method:
Two male outpatients with severe traumatic brain injury and associated psychological distress jointly engaged in a seven session treatment program based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy principles. Pre- and post-treatment measures of mood, psychological flexibility, and participation were taken in addition to weekly measures.
Results:
The intervention showed a therapeutic effect with one participant, and appeared to be acceptable for both participants with regard to program content, measures, and delivery mode by in a dyad. One participant showed both significant clinical and reliable change across several outcome measures including measures of mood and psychological flexibility. The second participant did not show a reduction in psychological inflexibility, but did show a significant drop in negative affect. Significant changes pre- to post-treatment for measures of participation were not indicated. Qualitatively, both participants engaged in committed action set in accordance with their values.
Conclusions:
This study suggests that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy may be feasible to be delivered in a dyad with individuals who have a severe traumatic brain injury. A further test of its potential efficacy in a phase II clinical trial is recommended
Spectral evidence for a powerful compact jet from XTE J1118+480
We present observations of the X-ray transient XTE J1118+480 during its
Low/Hard X-ray state outburst in 2000, at radio and sub-millimetre wavelengths
with the VLA, Ryle Telescope, MERLIN and JCMT. The high-resolution MERLIN
observations reveal all the radio emission (at 5 GHz) to come from a compact
core with physical dimensions smaller than 65*d(kpc) AU. The combined radio
data reveal a persistent and inverted radio spectrum, with spectral index
\~+0.5. The source is also detected at 350 GHz, on an extrapolation of the
radio spectrum. Flat or inverted radio spectra are now known to be typical of
the Low/Hard X-ray state, and are believed to arise in synchrotron emission
from a partially self-absorbed jet. Comparison of the radio and sub-millimetre
data with reported near-infrared observations suggest that the synchrotron
emission from the jet extends to the near-infrared, or possibly even optical
regimes. In this case the ratio of jet power to total X-ray luminosity is
likely to be P_J/L_X >> 0.01, depending on the radiative efficiency and
relativistic Doppler factor of the jet. Based on these arguments we conclude
that during the period of our observations XTE J1118+480 was producing a
powerful outflow which extracted a large fraction of the total accretion power.Comment: Accepted for publication as a Letter in MNRA

A close-pair binary in a distant triple supermassive black-hole system
Galaxies are believed to evolve through merging, which should lead to
multiple supermassive black holes in some. There are four known triple black
hole systems, with the closest pair being 2.4 kiloparsecs apart (the third
component is more distant at 3 kiloparsecs), which is far from the
gravitational sphere of influence of a black hole with mass 10
M (about 100 parsecs). Previous searches for compact black hole systems
concluded that they were rare, with the tightest binary system having a
separation of 7 parsecs. Here we report observations of a triple black hole
system at redshift z=0.39, with the closest pair separated by 140
parsecs. The presence of the tight pair is imprinted onto the properties of the
large-scale radio jets, as a rotationally-symmetric helical modulation, which
provides a useful way to search for other tight pairs without needing extremely
high resolution observations. As we found this tight pair after searching only
six galaxies, we conclude that tight pairs are more common than hitherto
believed, which is an important observational constraint for low-frequency

A comparison of treatment outcomes for individuals with substance use disorder alone and individuals with probable dual diagnosis
The co-occurrence of substance use and mental health problems, often referred to as dual diagnosis (DD), is increasingly recognised as commonplace within substance abuse treatment programs. Two-hundred and thirty-four individuals from 9 Australian Salvation Army drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs completed a 3-month post-discharge telephone follow-up. Using a cut-off score from the Psychiatric Subscale of the Addiction Severity Index (5th ed.), 66.7% were classified as likely to have DD and 33.3% as substance use disorder only (SUD). Both groups reported comparable and decreased substance use levels at follow-up, yet DD individuals perceived less improvement in substance use problems. Comparable improvements were reported in the areas of: symptom distress and recovery from symptoms. This was despite greater scope for improvement in individuals with DD. Duration of treatment and access to post treatment services were also assessed. Understanding factors effecting treatment outcomes is imperative for the implementation of effective, evidence based treatment programs

Application of NDT thermographic imaging of aerospace structures
This work aims to address the effectiveness and challenges of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspection and improve the detection of defects without causing damage to the material or operator. It focuses on two types of NDT methods; pulsed thermography and vibrothermography. The paper also explores the possibility of performing automated aerial inspection using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) provided with a thermographic imaging system. The concept of active thermography is discussed for inspecting aircraft CFRP panels along with the proposal for performing aerial inspection using the UAV for real time inspection. Static NDT results and the further UAV research indicate that the UAV inspection approach could significantly reduce the inspection time, cost, and workload, whilst potentially increasing the probability of detection
Carer burden and stigma in schizophrenia and affective disorders: experiences from Sri Lanka
Objectives:
Stigma compounds the burden experienced by family members of those with a mental illness. This study aimed to examine burden experienced by carers of people with schizophrenia or affective disorders and to explore the relationship between carer burden and stigma.
Method:
A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted with patient-carer dyads involving 67 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and 51 diagnosed with affective disorder. Carers completed the Zarit Burden Interview (short version) and stigma was measured using the Stigma Scale and the Internalised Stigma of Mental Illness Scale.
Results:
Carer burden was significantly higher for schizophrenia than affective disorders. Female carers experienced significantly higher burden than male carers. Diagnosis, gender of carer and stigma predicted 22% of the variance in carer burden, with gender identified as a significant predictor.
Conclusions:
Reducing stigma related to disclosure of mental illness in carers has the potential to reduce carer burden
