    Mode coupling theory in the FDR-preserving field theory of interacting Brownian particles

    We develop a renormalized perturbation theory for the dynamics of interacting Brownian particles, which preserves the fluctuation-dissipation relation order by order.     Current-induced nuclear-spin activation in a two-dimensional electron gas

    Electrically detected nuclear magnetic resonance was studied in detail in a two-dimensional electron gas as a function of current bias and temperature. We show that applying a relatively modest dc-current bias, I_dc ~ 0.5 microAmps, can induce a re-entrant and even enhanced nuclear spin signal compared with the signal obtained under similar thermal equilibrium conditions at zero current bias. Our observations suggest that dynamic nuclear spin polarization by small current flow is possible in a two-dimensional electron gas, allowing for easy manipulation of the nuclear spin by simple switching of a dc current.Comment: 5 pages, 3 fig

    Pairing Reentrance Phenomenon in Heated Rotating Nuclei in the Shell Model Monte Carlo Approach

    Rotational motion of heated 72-Ge is studied within the microscopic Shell Model Monte Carlo approach. We investigate the the angular momentum alignment and nuclear pairing correlations associated with J-pi Cooper pairs as a function of the rotational frequency and temperature. The reentrance of pairing correlations with temperature is predicted at high rotational frequencies. It manifests itself through the anomalous behavior of specific heat and level density.Comment: 4 pages; 4 figure

    Applications of the ER-2 meteorological measurement system

    The NASA ER-2 aircraft is used as a platform for high altitude atmospheric missions. The Meteorological Measurement System (MMS) was developed specifically for atmospheric research to provide accurate high resolution measurements of pressure, temperature, and the 3-D wind vector with a sampling rate of 5/s. The MMS consist of three subsystems: (1) an air motion sensing system to measure the velocity of the air with respect to the aircraft; (2) a high resolution inertial navigation system (INS) to measure the velocity of the aircraft with respect to the earth; and (3) a data acquisition system to sample, process, and record the measurement quantities. MMS data have been used extensively by ER-2 investigators in elucidating the polar ozone chemistry. Herein, applications on atmospheric dynamics are emphasized. Large scale (polar vortex, potential vorticity, model atmosphere), mesoscale (gravity waves, mountain waves) and microscale (heat fluxes) atmospheric phenomena are investigated and discussed

    Role of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor in Sugen 5416-induced experimental pulmonary hypertension

    Rationale: Rats dosed with the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor Sugen 5416 (Su), placed in hypoxia then restored to normoxia has become a widely used model of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The mechanism by which Su exaccerbates pulmonary hypertension is, however, unclear. Objectives: We investigated Su-activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) in patient human pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (hPASMCs) and patient blood outgrowth endothelial cells (BOECs). We also examined the effect of AhR on aromatase and estrogen levels in the lung. Methods, Measurements and Main Results: Protein and mRNA analysis demonstrated that CYP1A1 was very highly induced in the lungs of Su/hypoxic (Su/Hx) rats. The AhR antagonist CH223191 (8mg/kg/day) reversed the development of PAH in this model in vivo and normalized lung CYP1A1 expression. Increased lung aromatase and estrogen levels in Su/Hx rats were also normalized by CH223191 as was AhR nuclear translocator (ARNT [HIF-1β]) which is shared by HIF-1α and AhR. Su reduced HIF1α expression in hPASMCs. Su induced proliferation in BOECs and increased apoptosis in human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (hPMECs) and also induced translocation of AhR to the nucleus in hPASMCs. Under normoxic conditions, hPASMCs do not proliferate to Su. However when grown in hypoxia (1%) Su induced hPASMC proliferation. Conclusion: In combination with hypoxia, Su is proliferative in patient hPASMCs and patient BOECs and Su/Hx-induced PAH in rats may be facilitated by AhR-induced CYP1A1, ARNT and aromatase. Inhibition of the AhR receptor may be a novel approach to the treatment of pulmonary hypertension

    Contrasting Behavior of the 5/2 and 7/3 Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in a Tilted Field

    Using a tilted field geometry, the effect of an in-plane magnetic field on the even denominator nu = 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state is studied. The energy gap of the nu = 5/2 state is found to collapse linearly with the in-plane magnetic field above ~0.5 T. In contrast, a strong enhancement of the gap is observed for the nu = 7/3 state. The radically distinct tilted-field behaviour between the two states is discussed in terms of Zeeman and magneto-orbital coupling within the context of the proposed Moore-Read pfaffian wavefunction for the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect

    Intrinsic Gap of the nu=5/2 Fractional Quantum Hall State

    The fractional quantum Hall effect is observed at low field, in a regime where the cyclotron energy is smaller than the Coulomb interaction. The nu=5/2 excitation gap is measured to be 262+/-15 mK at ~2.6 T, in good agreement with previous measurements performed on samples with similar mobility, but with electronic density larger by a factor of two. The role of disorder on the nu=5/2 gap is examined. Comparison between experiment and theory indicates that a large discrepancy remains for the intrinsic gap extrapolated from the infinite mobility (zero disorder) limit. In contrast, no such large discrepancy is found for the nu=1/3 Laughlin state. The observation of the nu=5/2 state in the low-field regime implies that inclusion of non-perturbative Landau level mixing may be necessary to better understand the energetics of half-filled fractional quantum hall liquids.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; typo corrected, comment expande

    On the Neutral Gas Content and Environment of NGC 3109 and the Antlia Dwarf Galaxy

    As part of a continuing survey of nearby galaxies, we have mapped the neutral gas content of the low surface brightness, Magellanic-type galaxy NGC 3109 --- and its environment, including the Antlia dwarf galaxy --- at unprecedented velocity resolution and brightness sensitivity. The HI mass of NGC 3109 is measured to be (3.8 +/- 0.5) x 10^8 Msun. A substantial warp in the disk of NGC 3109 is detected in the HI emission image in the form of an extended low surface brightness feature. We report a positive detection in HI of the nearby Antlia dwarf galaxy, and measure its total neutral gas mass to be (6.8 +/- 1.4) x 10^5 Msun. We show the warp in NGC 3109 to lie at exactly the same radial velocity as the gas in the Antlia dwarf galaxy and speculate that Antlia disturbed the disk of NGC 3109 during a mild encounter ~1 Gyr in the past.
