    Gamma-rays from Dark Showers with Twin Higgs Models

    We consider a twin WIMP scenario whose twin sector contains a full dark copy of the SM hadrons, where the lightest twin particles are twin pions. By analogy to the standard WIMP paradigm, the dark matter (DM) freezes out through twin electroweak interactions, and annihilates into a dark shower of light twin hadrons. These are either stable or decay predominantly to standard model (SM) photons. We show that this 'hadrosymmetric' scenario can be consistent with all applicable astrophysical, cosmological and collider constraints. In order to decay the twin hadrons before the big-bang nucleosynthesis epoch, an additional portal between the SM and twin sector is required. In most cases we find this additional mediator is within reach of either the LHC or future intensity frontier experiments. Furthermore, we conduct simulations of the dark shower and consequent photon spectra. We find that fits of these spectra to the claimed galactic center gamma-ray excess seen by Fermi-LAT non-trivially coincide with regions of parameter space that both successfully generate the observed DM abundance and exhibit minimal fine-tuning.Comment: 45 pages, 11 figures, v2: journal version, extended discussions in Secs.     Triggering Soft Bombs at the LHC

    Very high multiplicity, spherically-symmetric distributions of soft particles, with pTp_T ~ few hundred MeV, may be a signature of strongly-coupled hidden valleys that exhibit long, efficient showering windows. With traditional triggers, such "soft bomb" events closely resemble pile-up and are therefore only recorded with minimum bias triggers at a very low efficiency. We demonstrate a proof-of-concept for a high-level triggering strategy that efficiently separates soft bombs from pile-up by searching for a "belt of fire": A high density band of hits on the innermost layer of the tracker. Seeding our proposed high-level trigger with existing jet, missing transverse energy or lepton hardware-level triggers, we show that net trigger efficiencies of order 10% are possible for bombs of mass several hundred GeV. We also consider the special case that soft bombs are the result of an exotic decay of the 125 GeV Higgs. The fiducial rate for "Higgs bombs" triggered in this manner is marginally higher than the rate achievable by triggering directly on a hard muon from associated Higgs production.Comment: 38 pages, 5 tables, 14 figure

    Our Homes, Our Stores: Aging in Place For LGBTQ Communities in the San Francisco Bay Area

    The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of gentrification on the social networks and communities of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) elderly people living in the San Francisco Bay Area. The expectation was that, due to the rising cost of living, people in elderly LGBTQ communities would be relocating; this would result in the fragmentation of support networks and community spaces. I used a two-part interviewing process. In the first interview, I asked participants to tell me about themselves and their lives, as well as what they consider to be important aspects of their lives in the Bay Area. The second interview was the co-creation of a life history calendar, a visual timeline of a person’s life history. I found that the lasting effects of the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s have negatively impacted the LGBTQ elderly community. While participants acknowledge gentrification as a concern in the Bay Area, they do not consider it to be a salient issue for their communities specifically. Participants reported adapting to the changes in their communities resulting from HIV/AIDS by utilizing phone lines, newspapers, online chat rooms, and online networking sites to meet one another. They also expressed desires to see more community involvement from youth, who appear less involved and more transient to the Bay Area than participants remember being in their own youth. The majority of academic literature on LGBTQ aging focuses on the medical aspects of aging and discrimination in healthcare facilities, but not as much on LGBTQ aging in place. This research begins to address the interaction between LGBTQ aging, aging in place, and community trauma

    Incorporating reflection boundary conditions in the Neumann series radiative transport equation: Application to photon propagation and reconstruction in diffuse optical imaging

    We propose a formalism to incorporate boundary conditions in a Neumann-series-based radiative transport equation. The formalism accurately models the reflection of photons at the tissue-external medium interface using Fresnel’s equations. The formalism was used to develop a gradient descent-based image reconstruction technique. The proposed methods were implemented for 3D diffuse optical imaging. In computational studies, it was observed that the average root-mean-square error (RMSE) for the output images and the estimated absorption coefficients reduced by 38% and 84%, respectively, when the reflection boundary conditions were incorporated. These results demonstrate the importance of incorporating boundary conditions that model the reflection of photons at the tissue-external medium interface

    Transactional events (TE) are an extension of Concurrent ML (CML), a programming model for synchronous message-passing. Prior work has focused on TE's formal semantics and its implementation. This paper considers programming idioms, particularly those that vary unexpectedly from the corresponding CML idioms. First, we solve a subtle problem with client-server protocols in TE. Second, we argue that CML's wrap and guard primitives do not translate well to TE, and we suggest useful workarounds. Finally, we discuss how to rewrite CML protocols that use abort actions

    Fiscal Forecasts at the FOMC: Evidence from the Greenbooks

    This paper examines fiscal policy forecasts prepared for the Federal Open Market Committee and its influence on U.S. monetary policy. The forecasts contain useful information beyond that in the CBO’s forecasts. Fiscal forecast errors are only weakly correlated with forecast errors for inflation and output growth, but those for the budget surplus are highly correlated with those for the unemployment rate and the output gap. Some fiscal variables can also account for a significant fraction of the “exogenous” changes in the federal funds rate target that Romer and Romer (2004) studied, consistent with the board’s statements on the importance of fiscal policy

    Effect of Ionic Liquid Structure on the Oxygen Reduction Reaction under Humidified Conditions

    The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is widely studied in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) but typically in dry environments. Because water is known to affect diffusion coefficients and reaction outcomes, the influence of water on the ORR is expected to be significant. We have therefore studied the effect of RTIL structure on the ORR at different relative humidity (RH) levels using cyclic voltammetry. A broad range of cations including imidazolium, ammonium, pyrrolidinium, pyridinium, sulfonium, and phosphonium, and anions such as [BF4]-, [PF6]-, [NTf2]-, and [FAP]- were employed. The cation was found to have a large effect on the reduction current of oxygen, even at low humidity levels (65 RH%). Consequently, the choice of cation needs to be carefully considered when selecting a suitable RTIL solvent for oxygen reduction in humidified environments. The size, structure, and hydrophobicity of the ions were found to dictate the degree at which the RTIL is susceptible to changes in humidity. The physical characteristics of the RTIL electric double layer on platinum electrode surfaces were further investigated by atomic force microscopy force-curve studies in three selected RTILs. The results suggest that there is a significant amount of water incorporated at the electrode-RTIL interface in [C2mim][NTf2] and [N4,1,1,1][NTf2] but not in the more hydrophobic [P14,6,6,6][NTf2]. The presence of moisture has a significant impact on ORR currents in [C2mim][NTf2], even at extremely low humidity levels, which was verified by the higher level of water incorporation in [C2mim][NTf2] compared with [N4,1,1,1][NTf2] and [P14,6,6,6][NTf2]. Hydrophobic and large RTIL cations and anions (e.g., [P14,6,6,6]+ and [FAP]-) are recommended for applications where a stable ORR current response is required under humidified conditions
