    The Still Bay points of Apollo 11 Rock Shelter, Namibia : an inter-regional perspective

    Abstract: Dating to roughly 80,000 to 70,000 years ago, components of the Still Bay technocomplex of southern Africa and their potential behavioural implications have been widely discussed. Stone points with invasive retouch, as defined over 90 years ago by Goodwin and van Riet Lowe, serve as markers for Still Bay assemblages, yet many Still Bay sites remain undated and comprehensive, comparable sets of data for their point assemblages remain unpublished. Much of the Middle Stone Age at the site of Apollo 11 in Namibia was undated until 2010, when a potential Still Bay component was announced. Although a Still Bay assemblage at Apollo 11 would represent the most northwesterly and inland expression of this technocomplex, its points have never been fully analysed. This paper presents their morphometric data and an interpretation of point-production strategies. These results are then compared with data obtained for two South African sites: Hollow Rock Shelter in the Western Cape and Umhlatuzana in KwaZulu-Natal. This comparison demonstrates that whereas there are no statistically significant differences in the morphometric data sets between the three sites, there are both similarities and differences in point-production strategies, cross-section shapes and the use of raw materials for knapping. It is suggested that these similarities and variations represent aspects of how knowledge-transfer systems and knapping conventions were followed on both intra-regional and inter-regional scales

    Configurations and decay hindrances of high- K states in Hf 180

    Multi-quasiparticle high-K states, several of which are isomeric, were observed in Hf180 with the Gammasphere array. Lifetimes in the ns-μs range were determined using centroid-shift and decay measurements within a μs coincidence time window. The configurations of high-K states involve two and four quasiparticles, with states up to Kπ=(18-) established. High-K excitations are found to be progressively more favored with increasing excitation energy. The K quantum number is quite robust up to the highest spins observed, as evidenced by the large values of the reduced hindrance for isomeric decays. Rotational bands built on three high-K states are identified, and the measured branching ratios in these sequences enable the assignment of underlying configurations. Multi-quasiparticle calculations using the Lipkin-Nogami approach for pairing, with blocking included, reproduce the observed high-K energies quite well

    Mousterian musicianship? The case of the Divje babe I bone

    The reputed Neanderthal ‘flute’ from the Slovenian site of Divje babe I has stimulated much interest and detailed research since the original publication of its discovery in 1997. In spite of nearly ten years’ worth of analysis and discussion its status as an artefact has remained ambiguous; nevertheless it is still frequently cited as a ‘flute’. This paper examines the literature and research regarding this object, and finds that much of the ambiguity regarding the object’s status derives from the literature itself. It concludes that there is no need to invoke hominin agency in explaining the features of the bone

    A study of high spin states in the odd-neutron isotones 239Pu and 237U is reported. Striking differences were found in the high-spin properties of rotational bands built on the 1/2+[631] ground states in these two nuclei. These differences mirror those observed in the even-even Pu and U immediate neighbors and appear to be related to the strength of octupole correlations
