Big data in healthcare - the promises, challenges and opportunities from a research perspective: A case study with a model database

Recent advances in data collection during routine health care in the form of Electronic Health Records (EHR), medical device data (e.g., infusion pump informatics, physiological monitoring data, and insurance claims data, among others, as well as biological and experimental data, have created tremendous opportunities for biological discoveries for clinical application. However, even with all the advancement in technologies and their promises for discoveries, very few research findings have been translated to clinical knowledge, or more importantly, to clinical practice. In this paper, we identify and present the initial work addressing the relevant challenges in three broad categories: data, accessibility, and translation. These issues are discussed in the context of a widely used detailed database from an intensive care unit, Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC III) database

NASA Multidisciplinary Design and Analysis Fellowship Program

This report summarizes the results of a multi-year training grant for the development and implementation of a Multidisciplinary Design and Analysis (MDA) Fellowship Program at Georgia Tech. The Program funded the creation of graduate MS and PhD degree programs in aerospace systems design, analysis and integration. It also provided prestigious Fellowships with associated Industry Internships for outstanding engineering students. The graduate program has become the foundation for a vigorous and productive research effort and has produced: 20 MS degrees, 7 Ph.D. degrees, and has contributed to 9 ongoing Ph.D. students. The results of the research are documented in 32 publications (23 of which are included on a companion CDROM) and 4 annual student design reports (included on a companion CDROM). The legacy of this critical funding is the Center for Aerospace Systems Analysis at Georgia Tech which is continuing the graduate program, the research, and the industry internships established by this grant

Embedding Interoperability in System of Systems: Definition and Characterization of Fundamental Requirements

Part 9: Collaborative Business Frameworks IIInternational audienceThe main objective of this communication is to discuss the engineering of a System of Systems (SoS), including interoperability concept. More precisely, the here presented research focuses on the fundamental requirements to consider in a System of Systems Engineering (SoSE) project and that have to be maintain during the entire life cycle of a SoS. First, the concept of interoperability, according to its definition and its characteristics, is presented. Then, the concept of SoS is presented in the same manner. This leads to introduce and present the possible links between System of Systems and interoperability. These links are (1) clarified and defined, (2) re-expressed to meet requirements’ definition and (3) not related to a given SoS in order to be generic

Pricing the credit risk of secured debt and financial leasing

This paper presents closed form solutions to price secured bank loans and financial leases subject to default risk. Secured debt fair credit spreads always increase in the debtor's default probability, whereas financial leasing fair credit spreads may well decrease in the lessee's default probability and even be negative. The reason is that the lessor, unlike the secured lender, can gain from the lessee's default, especially when the leasing contract envisages initial prepayments or the lessee's terminal options to either purchase the leased asset or to extend the lease maturity. This result, which critically depends on contractual and bankruptcy code provisions, can explain some of the empirical evidence and the use of financial leases as an alternative to secured bank lending to finance small, risky and relatively opaque firms
