Woman Abuse in Sports-Related Contexts: Social Scientific Knowledge
There was a vibrant surge in the 1980s and 1990s of social scientific work on men’s abuse of women in sports-related contexts, but this wave receded over the past two decades and eventually disappeared. Recently, however, an international cadre of scholars has revisited the off- and online victimization of women in these settings. The main objective of this paper is to examine what the extant scholarly literature tells and does not tell us about this social problem
Woman Abuse in Dating Relationships: An Exploratory Study
An exploratory survey of premarital woman abuse in a sample
of Ontario male university students yielded an incidence rate of 70 percent.
Consistent with many U.S. studies, "minor" forms of abuse were more frequently
reported. Moreover, cohabitors were more violent than men involved in less
serious dating relationships. Suggestions for further research are
discussed.
Men\u27s Rights, Gun Ownership, Racism, and the Assault on Women\u27s Reproductive Health Rights: Hidden Connections
In this current era characterized by much fear of, and anxiety about, the political influence and actions of the U.S. alternative right (alt-right), only a small number of men’s rights organizations receive attention from the media, the Democratic Party, or a large cadre of progressives. This article demonstrates that ignoring all-male anti-feminist organizations is a flawed strategy for challenging the recent rise of the alt-right because these misogynistic groups are heavily involved in the gun rights movement, major contributors to racist practices and discourses, and active participants in efforts to criminalize and curtail women’s access to abortion. Another, but equally important, aim of this piece is to briefly suggest new means of creating effective movements aimed at achieving social justice, one that involves a coalition of broader constituencies that prioritize gender and sexuality as well as race/ethnicity and social class
An Exploration of Work Related Mental Health Issues Experienced by Rural Emergency Nurses
Nurses working in rural emergency departments (ED) are exposed to trauma, pain, and suffering on a daily basis. They care for members of their community, including friends and neighbours in an unpredictable environment with limited resources. These contextual factors not only have a negative impact on provision of quality patient care, but also create very stressful work environment putting these ED nurses at high risk for experiencing emotional trauma. This exploratory, qualitative descriptive study used semi-structured interviews to investigate the experiences of rural emergency nurses. A qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the interviews. Findings describe the impact their work experiences had on the nurses mental health and illuminate factors that could contribute to the development of compassion fatigue, burnout and PTSD. Findings will be used to inform future research into early recognition and resiliency programs to mitigate the effects of occupational mental health issues for rural emergency nurses
Male-to-Female Sexual Violence in Rural Communities: A Sociological Review
The extant sociological literature on male-to-female violence in rural communities reveals that the bulk of the empirical work on this problem focuses mainly on non-lethal physical assaults, such as beatings. Much more research on sexual violence is sorely needed. The main objective of this review is twofold: (1) to describe the current state of international sociological knowledge about male sexual violence against adult women and (2) to suggest new directions in research and theory
