An analysis of the 2002 Uruguayan banking crisis

The authors review the series of events that led to the 2002 Uruguayan banking crisis, assess the current status of the Uruguayan banking sector, and analyze the policy responses undertaken by the Uruguayan authorities to counteract the crisis. The main conclusion from their analysis is that although the immediate trigger for the crisis was caused by contagion resulting from Argentina's financial crisis, the spread and magnification of the crisis that engulfed the Uruguayan economy was amplified by certain weaknesses of the Uruguayan economy in general, and the domestic banking sector in particular. The authors also believe that the policy responses adopted by the Uruguayan authorities were mostly adequate, allowing Uruguay to successfully counteract simultaneous banking and public debt crises. Most important, the Uruguayan authorities were able to overcome a severe crisis while preserving the necessary trust in banking contracts, achieving a high level of social stability and political cohesion, and maintaining a fluid dialogue with multilateral financial institutions and all affected parties. Efectos de concordancia en las oraciones escindidas del español

En este artículo se estudian distintas relaciones de concordancia en construcciones escindidas del español. La concordancia es aquí entendida en un sentido extenso, como el recurso del que dispone la lengua para señalar morfológicamente la concurrencia de la parte léxica de dos o más palabras del discurso, de forma, que, si alguna de esas palabras cambia sus rasgos morfológicos (no ya sólo los de género y número, sino también los de tiempo, caso, persona, etc.) las que concuerdan con ella sufren una alteración morfológica simultánea, sin que ello implique que el morfema variado tenga necesariamente la misma expresión fonética en los dos miembros concordados. De este modo, se distinguen en las construcciones escindidas tres tipos de concordancia. Por una parte, la concordancia de tiempo y número entre el verbo copulativo y el verbo de la oración de relativo. Por otra, la concordancia de persona entre el elemento escindido y el pronombre relativo, y por último la concordancia de caso, nuevamente entre elemento escindido y pronombre. Toda esta labor de análisis de las relaciones de concordancia en las construcciones escindidas del español tiene por objeto profundizar en el misterioso carácter de los componentes de este peculiar mecanismo sintáctico de focalización.In this article I study several concordance relationships in cleft and pseudocleft sentences in Spanish. Here, concordance is understood in the wide sense, as the linguistic resource to sign morfologically the coocurrence between the lexical component of two or more words in the discourse. As a consequence, if some of that words changes its morfological features, not only in gender or number, but also in tense, case, person, etc, the ones that have concordance with them should suffer some simultaneous morfological change, as well. This change need not involve a identity in the phonetics of the morphemes with concordance. At this point, I distinguish three types of concordance in cleft and pseudoclef sentences. On the one side, time and number concordance between the copulative verb and the verb in the embedded sentence. On the other side, person concordance, between the cleft element and the relative pronoun. And, finally, case concordance again between the cleft element and the relative pronoun. All this analysing those concordance relationships in cleft and pseudocleft sentences in Spanish is aimed on deeping inside the mysterious character of the components of this peculiar syntactic focalization mechanism
