Animal Rights, Government Regulations, and Rural Economies: An Examination of Factors Contributing to the Economic Future of Rural Communities
The purpose of this paper is to examine the increased role animal-rights organizations play in shaping attitudes and regulations that impact the long term viability of rural economies. The animal-rights movement is comprised of a highly diversified, often secretive, loosely linked network of groups. This creates a certain amount of difficulty in describing first hand the attitudes, values, and goals of these groups. A variety of animal production and other animal based industries were examined in terms of their contribution to rural, as well as state, economies. Secondary data analysis was performed on several sociological, animal rights, hunting and trapping, and agricultural texts, journals, and articles, which are cited throughout the text and in the bibliography. In addition telephone and personal interviews were used to gain additional information and insights. A discussion of new social movements and the appropriateness of including the animal-rights movement within this framework is developed. The research indicates conditions within the social structure conducive to violent and nonviolent conflict between animal rights advocates and members of the community engaged in animal production as well as other animal related activities. In addition, the research suggests the animal-rights movement is having, and will continue to have, an impact on those segments of the economy related to animal production, and/or utilization

Photon Orbital Angular Momentum in Astrophysics
Astronomical observations of the orbital angular momentum of photons, a
property of electromagnetic radiation that has come to the fore in recent
years, have apparently never been attempted. Here, I show that measurements of

Roll diffusion bonding of titanium alloy panels
Roll diffusion bonding technique is used for fabricating T-stiffened panel assemblies from titanium alloy. The single unit fabrication exhibits excellent strength characteristics under tensile and compressive loads. This program is applied to structures in which weight/strength ratio and integral construction are important considerations
On the origin of the difference between time and space
We suggest that the difference between time and space is due to spontaneous
symmetry breaking. In a theory with spinors the signature of the metric is
related to the signature of the Lorentz-group. We discuss a higher symmetry
that contains pseudo-orthogonal groups with arbitrary signature as subgroups.
The fundamental asymmetry between time and space arises then as a property of
the ground state rather than being put into the formulation of the theory a
priori. We show how the complex structure of quantum field theory as well as
gravitational field equations arise from spinor gravity - a fundamental spinor

Localized energy for wave equations with degenerate trapping
Localized energy estimates have become a fundamental tool when studying wave
equations in the presence of asymptotically at background geometry. Trapped
rays necessitate a loss when compared to the estimate on Minkowski space. A
loss of regularity is a common way to incorporate such. When trapping is
sufficiently weak, a logarithmic loss of regularity suffices. Here, by studying
a warped product manifold introduced by Christianson and Wunsch, we encounter
the first explicit example of a situation where an estimate with an algebraic
loss of regularity exists and this loss is sharp. Due to the global-in-time
nature of the estimate for the wave equation, the situation is more complicated
than for the Schr\"{o}dinger equation. An initial estimate with sub-optimal
loss is first obtained, where extra care is required due to the low frequency
contributions. An improved estimate is then established using energy
functionals that are inspired by WKB analysis. Finally, it is shown that the
loss cannot be improved by any power by saturating the estimate with a
quasimode.Comment: 18 page
Exotic Statistics for Ordinary Particles in Quantum Gravity
Objects exhibiting statistics other than the familiar Bose and Fermi ones are
natural in theories with topologically nontrivial objects including geons,
strings, and black holes. It is argued here from several viewpoints that the
statistics of ordinary particles with which we are already familiar are likely
to be modified due to quantum gravity effects. In particular, such
modifications are argued to be present in loop quantum gravity and in any
theory which represents spacetime in a fundamentally piecewise-linear fashion.
The appearance of unusual statistics may be a generic feature (such as the
deformed position-momentum uncertainty relations and the appearance of a
fundamental length scale) which are to be expected in any theory of quantum

Teachers’ perceptions of the influence of learners’ undisciplined behaviour on their working life and of the support of role-players
Unacceptable behaviour by learners in South African schools is a major concern for all stakeholders in the teaching profession. This explains the increased interest in the role and responsibility of teachers in managing problem behaviour and the effect of this behaviour on educators’ quality of life in the workplace. This research posed the following questions: Does inappropriate student behaviour affect teachers’ working life, and if so, to what extent? Is the prevalence of undisciplined behaviour higher amongst boys and in multicultural schools? What is the influence of learners’ disruptive behaviour on teachers? How do teachers experience support from role-players? A questionnaire was used to obtain information for answering these questions. Although the findings of this research indicated that not all teachers experience excessive emotional reactions that may contribute to stress, it appeared that undisciplined behaviour was the source of irritation, made demands on teachers’ temper and caused aggression. The majority of teachers reported that they enjoyed sufficient support from the school’s governing body, but they were not satisfied with the support from parents and the department of education. In spite of the high percentage of teachers who indicated that undisciplined behaviour impacted on their job satisfaction, the majority do not consider leaving the teaching profession
Electron-induced proton knockout from neutron rich nuclei
We study the evolution of the \eep cross section on nuclei with increasing
asymmetry between the number of neutrons and protons. The calculations are done
within the framework of the nonrelativistic and relativistic distorted-wave
impulse approximation. In the nonrelativistic model phenomenological
Woods-Saxon and Hartree-Fock wave functions are used for the proton bound-state
wave functions, in the relativistic model the wave functions are solutions of
Dirac-Hartree equations. The models are first tested against experimental data
on Ca and Ca nuclei, and then they are applied to a set of
