International audienceDès le XVIIème siècle, les maquettes de canoës des "Sauvages" d'Amérique du Nord, rapportés par voyageurs et officiers de marine, ont orné les cabinets de curiosités et nourri la connaissance sur les peuples lointains. La présente étude essaie de réattribuer à leurs contextes culturels respectifs les douze maquettes encore conservées au musée national de la Marine et au musée du quai Branly et restitue l'histoire de leur origine dans ces collection

Le Sacrifice, Melancholia: La fin du monde comme espace cinématographique du rebelle

In the movie The Sacrifice (1986), directed by Andreï Tarkovski, nuclear war threatens the world and Alexander sacrifices himself to save the mankind. In Melancholia (2012), by the danish director Lars von Trier (who considers Tarkovski as his master), Justine welcomes the upcoming destruction of the earth by an extraplanet. Both directors use here a same context, the imminent end of the world, to build a peculiar and special character – a chosen one, the Rebel. Ernst Jünger 's figure of the Rebel (The Retreat into the Forest) will help us follow Tarkovski and Lars von Trier's paths through the apocalypse

Oxidative stress biomarkers are associated with visible clinical signs of a disease in frigatebird nestlings

Infectious diseases are one of the most common threats for both domestic and wild animals, but little is known about the effects on the physiological condition and survival of wild animals. Here, we have tested for the first time in a wild vertebrate facing a viral disease possibly due to herpesvirus (i) whether nestlings with either low levels of oxidative damage or high levels of antioxidant protection are less susceptible to develop visible clinical signs, (ii) whether the disease is associated with the nestlings' oxidative status, (iii) whether the association between the disease and oxidative status is similar between males and females (iv), and whether cloacal and tracheal swabs might be used to detect herpesvirus. To address our questions, we took advantage of a population of Magnificent frigatebirds (Fregata magnificens) whose nestlings have experienced high mortality rates in recent times. Our work shows that (i) blood lipid oxidative damage is associated with observable clinical signs and survival probabilities of nestling frigatebirds, and (ii) that high glutathione levels in red blood cells are associated with the emergence of visible clinical signs of the disease. Our work provides evidence that differences in the oxidative status of nestlings might underlie individual health and survival

Forêts tropicales, changements d'usage des sols et risques infectieux émergents

Les forêts intertropicales constituent une source exceptionnelle de diversité biologique spécifique en macro-organismes, mais elles se révèlent être aussi de véritables pépinières en micro-organismes. Ces cinquante dernières années, certains de ces micro-organismes, à l'origine présents chez des animaux forestiers ou hébergés dans l'environnement comme le sol ou l'eau, se sont dévoilés être des agents pathogènes plus ou moins sévères pour les populations humaines exposées. Dans cet article, nous discutons des interactions hôtes-micro-organismes rencontrées dans les forêts primaires en les abordant tant d'un angle macroécologique que d'un point de vue plus fonctionnel, en l'illustrant de quatre exemples d'agents microbiens émergents. Plus que tout autre déterminant, les modifications d'usages des sols, notamment au travers de la déforestation pour le développement d'une agriculture, et les contacts avec les micro-organismes via la biodiversité, particulièrement lors de la pratique de chasse, exposent des individus susceptibles à ces nouveaux dangers micro-biens. Avec la déforestation et des expositions croissantes avec la faune sauvage, le risque de nouvelles infections humaines devient une réalité internationale exigeant de la part des autorités publiques de mieux prendre en considération ces éléments pour la sécurité sanitaire mondiale

Nested Explorative Maps: A new 3D canvas for conceptual design in architecture

International audienceIn this digital age, architects still need to alternate between paper sketches and 3D modeling software for their designs. Indeed, while 3D models enable to explore different views, creating them at very early stages might reduce creativity since they do not allow to superpose several tentative designs nor to refine them progressively, as sketches do. To enable exploratory design in 3D, we introduce Nested Explorative Maps, a new system dedicated to interactive design in architecture. Our model enables coarse to fine sketching of nested architectural structures, enabling to progressively sketch a 3D building from floor plan to interior design, thanks to a series of nested maps able to spread in 3D. Each map allows the visual representation of uncertainty as well as the interactive exploration of the alternative, tentative options. We validate the model through a user study conducted with professional architects, enabling us to highlight the potential of Nested Explorative Maps for conceptual design in architecture.En cette ère du numérique, les architectes doivent encore alterner entre le croquis papier et logiciels de modélisation 3D afin de réaliser leurs conceptions. En effet, les modèles 3D permettent d’explorer différentes vues mais leur création à un stade très précoce peut impliquer une perte de la créativité car ils ne permettent pas de superposer plusieurs plans provisoires ni de les affiner progressivement, comme le font les esquisses. Pour permettre la conception exploratoire dans l'espace 3D, nous présentons Nested Explorative Maps, un nouveau système dédié à la conception interactive en architecture. Notre modèle permet de dessiner du grossier aux détails des structures architecturales imbriquées, afin de dessiner progressivement un bâtiment en 3D, du plan à la décoration intérieure, grâce à une série de cartes imbriquées capables de se répandre en 3D. Chaque carte permet de représenter visuellement l’incertitude et d’explorer de manière interactive les différentes options possibles. Une étude utilisateur réalisée auprès d'architectes professionnels nous a permis de valider notre modèle et de mettre en évidence le potentiel des cartes exploratoires imbriquées pour la conception conceptuelle en architecture

Mayaro Virus in Wild Mammals, French Guiana

A serologic survey for Mayaro virus (Alphavirus, Togaviridae) in 28 wild nonflying forest mammal species in French Guiana showed a prevalence ranging from 0% to 52% and increasing with age. Species active during the day and those who spent time in trees were significantly more infected, results consistent with transmission implicating diurnal mosquitoes and continuous infectious pressure

A new species of tapir from the Amazon

All known species of extant tapirs are allopatric: 1 in southeastern Asia and 3 in Central and South America. The fossil record for tapirs, however, is much wider in geographical range, including Europe, Asia, and North and South America, going back to the late Oligocene, making the present distribution a relict of the original one. We here describe a new species of living Tapirus from the Amazon rain forest, the 1st since T. bairdii Gill, 1865, and the 1st new Perissodactyla in more than 100 years, from both morphological and molecular characters. It is shorter in stature than T. terrestris (Linnaeus, 1758) and has distinctive skull morphology, and it is basal to the clade formed by T. terrestris and T. pinchaque (Roulin, 1829). This highlights the unrecognized biodiversity in western Amazonia, where the biota faces increasing threats. Local peoples have long recognized our new species, suggesting a key role for traditional knowledge in understanding the biodiversity of the region

Severe Acquired Toxoplasmosis Caused by Wild Cycle of Toxoplasma gondii, French Guiana

From 1998 through 2006, 44 cases of severe primary toxoplasmosis were observed in French Guiana in immunocompetent adults. Toxoplasma gondii isolates exhibited an atypical multilocus genotype. Severe disease in humans may result from poor host adaptation to neotropical zoonotic strains of T. gondii circulating in a forest-based cycle
