    Librarian teachers on the move : are video tutorials an effective alternative tool for library information literacy instruction?: a case study

    The Ghent Biomedical Library research group has performed research over the last year on teaching information literacy in the Biomedical curriculum. The impact of a differentiated teaching methodology was studied in a framework of blended learning, with the first year university students acquiring information literacy competences. First year Bachelor students in Biomedical Sciences at Ghent University were asked to study video tutorials as a possible alternative teaching methodology to other educational formats. The EAHIL 2012 meeting offered the occasion to present two related items. Ann De Meulemeester presented “Self-efficacy tests are helpful in the acquisition of information literacy. A study in first year bachelor students.” The results of this research laid at the base of “Librarians on the move”, a new study concerning best practices regarding innovative teaching methodologies in information literacy. The preliminary results were presented in a question-based approach in dialog with the audience. This approach had the advantage of unlocking the potential within the audience, bringing them to reflect on their own teaching methods on information literacy. The article reflects on the presentation held at EAHIL, more detailed results will be presented later in 2012

    Inter-professional collaboration reduces the burden of caring for patients with mental illnesses in primary healthcare. A realist evaluation study

    Background:The implementation of primary care for mental health is often insufficient, whichleaves its mark on staff. A team-based approach of mental healthcare prevents poor staff mor-ale. A community health centre (CHC), therefore, set up a project promoting interprofessionalcollaboration with a mental health team (MHT).Objectives:This study aimed to understand how an MHT would influence staff morale in a pri-mary care setting, aiming to formulate some recommendations for future projects.Methods:In 2017, interviews and a focus group discussion were conducted among the staff ofa CHC. Using a qualitative approach, we aimed to unravel contextual factors and mechanismsthat determine the effect of an MHT on staff morale.Results:The project relieved the burden of the patient encounters and staff members felt morevaluable to patients. Underlying mechanisms were recognition, altered attitudes towards patientsand role clarity. Facilitating factors were intercultural care mediators and a positive team atmos-phere, whereas inhibiting factors were inefficient time management and communicative issues.Conclusion:Our study elucidated mechanisms and the contextual factors by which an MHT ingeneral practice improves staff morale

    Development of a management tool for the equal evaluation of economic, social and ecological effects of adaptation scenarios for attenuating the effects of climate change induced flooding

    Climate change is expected to influence river flooding which may have important implications for socio-economic and ecological systems. Changed flood risks require a proper policy. Water managers need to develop and select those adaptation scenarios that maximise welfare. Doing so requires addressing various challenges; integrating climate change effects in flood modelling, development of assessment methods for flood risk to social and ecological systems, development of methodologies for the assessment of non-flood related impacts from adaptation scenarios and, finally, integrating all effects, both positive and negative, related to an adaptation scenario in a comprehensive decision framework. The ADAPT project, which is financed by the Belgian Science Policy (BELSPO), aims to tackle these challenges by the development of a practical methodology, for assisting decision making about adaptation scenarios for attenuating the effects of climate change induced flooding, that builds on the integrated evaluation of economic, social as well as ecological effects.     Understanding PP placement in written Dutch : a corpus-based multifactorial investigation of the principal syntactic, semantic and discursive determinants

    The present paper aims at refining current knowledge about the driving forces in Dutch constituent ordering of non-predicate prepositional phrases (PPs) as well as re-evaluating the common assumption in traditional Dutch reference grammars that the middle field position is the standard slot. Building on journalistic data in the Dutch Parallel Corpus, it is first shown that non-predicate PPs are significantly more often placed in postfield position (the structural position after the final verb cluster) than in middle field position (the position before the final verb cluster), which indicates that the postfield position rather than the middle field position should be considered the standard slot for PPs in written Dutch. Second, a binary logistic regression model was fitted with PP placement as a function of several syntactic, semantic and discursive predictor variables. This model is able to describe, explain and predict more than 80% of the variation in the data set, leading to a much better understanding of the mechanisms underlying PP placement in written journalistic Dutch. On the basis of our findings, we furthermore propose a refined and more fine-grained version of the theoretical framework in which PP placement in Dutch is traditionally described and understood
