    Entanglement production by quantum error correction in the presence of correlated environment

    We analyze the effect of a quantum error correcting code on the entanglement of encoded logical qubits in the presence of a dephasing interaction with a correlated environment. Such correlated reservoir introduces entanglement between physical qubits. We show that for short times the quantum error correction interprets such entanglement as errors and suppresses it. However for longer time, although quantum error correction is no longer able to correct errors, it enhances the rate of entanglement production due to the interaction with the environment.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, published versio

    Purpose: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) has been originally conceived as a first step procedure for super obese (SO) patients, but it is currently considered a stand-alone intervention. Medium-term to long-term studies have shown weight regain and risk of de novo gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). The aim of this study was to evaluate outcomes of SG in SO subjects. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database was carried out to find all SO patients who had undergone SG with a minimum follow-up of 5 years. Inclusion criteria were preoperative endoscopy negative for esophagitis and/or hiatal hernia, and no GERD or acid reduction medication before SG. Reflux symptoms were evaluated using a validated questionnaire and endoscopy. Remission rates from comorbidities and percentage of excess body mass index (BMI) loss were recorded. Results: A total of 66 (45 male/21 female) patients were included in our study. Mean preoperative BMI and age were 57.4±5.8 kg/m2 and 32.7±11.2 years, respectively. After 5 years, mean percentage of excess BMI loss was 56.42±27.8, and remission rates from hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia were 33.3%, 5.3%, and 20%, respectively. After 5 years, new-onset GERD occurred in 66.7% of patients and 33.3% were taking acid reduction medication. Endoscopy revealed 12 (18.2%) cases of esophagitis ≥grade A. Conclusions: After 5 years, weight loss in SO patients is satisfactory, but the vast majority of patients is still in class II obesity, and resolution of comorbidities is disappointing. High rates of de novo GERD and esophagitis may occur

    Is there an indication left for gastric band? A single center experience on 178 patients with a follow-up of 10 years

    Background: Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB) has been widely performed in the past at our university bariatric center. Aim of this study was to retrospectively assess long term outcomes of LAGB at our university hospital, with special regard to non-response (EWL 50), while 38 (21.3%) were non-responders (%EWL < 25), 32 (18%) had an insufficient weight loss (25 < %EWL < 50) and 34 (19.1%) underwent band removal. Among these, 6 (3.4%) were removed for complications and 28 (15.7%) for insufficient weight loss. Weight regain occurred in 38 out of 144 (26.4%) subjects with the band in place at 10 years. Only one case of early vomiting with readmission for medical treatment was recorded. Slippage, erosion/migration and port/tube complications occurred in 4 (2.2%), 2(1.1%) and 9(5%) cases respectively. Conclusion: LAGB is a safe and moderately effective bariatric procedure but it showed disappointing rates of removal, non-response and remission from comorbidities. However, LAGB could still be proposed for selected/motivated patients

    Conversions related to adhesions in abdominal surgery. Robotic versus laparoscopic approach: a multicentre experience

    Background: An advantage of robotic surgery over laparoscopy is the lower rate of unplanned conversion. One of the implicated reasons for conversion is adhesions from previous abdominal surgeries (PASs). Methods: A comparative analysis of 98 patients with history of open PAS treated by laparoscopic or robotic surgery was performed. Primary endpoint was the rate of conversion to open surgery related to adhesiolysis. Secondary endpoints were short-term outcomes and complications. Results: Conversion rate specifically related to adhesiolysis was significantly lower in robotic group (13 for laparoscopic group vs. 2 for robotic group; p = 0.046). Conversions occurred during adhesiolysis were significantly related to severity of adhesions expressed by peritoneal adhesion index (PAI) score (p &lt; 0.001), number of abdominal areas involved by adhesions (p &lt; 0.001) and severity of PAI into the target area of surgical intervention (p = 0.021). Conclusions: Benefits of robotic surgery are more noticeable in performing procedures with increasing technical difficulties

    Pinch Grip per SE Is Not an Occupational Risk Factor for the Musculoskeletal System: An Experimental Study on Field

    Introduction: Some ergonomic evaluation methods define pinch grip as a risk factor independent of the exerted force. The present experimental study was performed with the main aim of objectively measuring the muscle engagement during the execution of pinch grip. Methods: the participants of the study were healthy workers occupationally involved in a high-intensity repetitive job related to the sorting of letters and small packages. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to study the activity of the abductor pollicis brevis and first dorsal interosseous fibers related to the execution of the required working tasks, while the force exerted during voluntary muscle contraction for pinch grip was measured by a portable acquisition system. The subjects were specifically asked to exert the maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) and further voluntary isometric contractions with a spontaneous force (SF) equal to 10%,20% and 50% of the MVIC; finally, the workers were asked to hold in pinch grip two types of envelopes, weighing 100 g and 500 g, respectively. Results: The force required to pinch 100 and 500 g envelopes by the fifteen subjects of the study corresponded to 4 and 5% MVIC, respectively. The corresponding sEMG average rectified values (ARV) were approximately 6% of that at MVIC for first dorsal interosseus (FDI) fibers and approximately 20-25% of MVIC for abductor pollicis brevis (ABP) fibers. Bivariate correlation analysis showed significant relationships between force at MVIC and FDI ARV at MCV. Conclusions: The obtained results demonstrate that muscle recruitment during pinch grip varies as a function of the SF: not only the position but also the exerted force should be considered when assessing the pinch grip as risk factor for biomechanical overload of the upper limb

    Bi-Allelic Mutations in Zebrafish pank2 Gene Lead to Testicular Atrophy and Perturbed Behavior without Signs of Neurodegeneration

    Coenzyme A (CoA) is an essential cofactor in all living organisms, being involved in a large number of chemical reactions. Sequence variations in pantothenate kinase 2 (PANK2), the first enzyme of CoA biosynthesis, are found in patients affected by Pantothenate Kinase Associated Neurodegeneration (PKAN), one of the most common forms of neurodegeneration, with brain iron accumulation. Knowledge about the biochemical and molecular features of this disorder has increased a lot in recent years. Nonetheless, the main culprit of the pathology is not well defined, and no treatment option is available yet. In order to contribute to the understanding of this disease and facilitate the search for therapies, we explored the potential of the zebrafish animal model and generated lines carrying biallelic mutations in the pank2 gene. The phenotypic characterization of pank2-mutant embryos revealed anomalies in the development of venous vascular structures and germ cells. Adult fish showed testicular atrophy and altered behavioral response in an anxiety test but no evident signs of neurodegeneration. The study suggests that selected cell and tissue types show a higher vulnerability to pank2 deficiency in zebrafish. Deciphering the biological basis of this phenomenon could provide relevant clues for better understanding and treating PKAN
