Intentions to Return of Irregular Migrants: Illegality as a Cause of Skill Waste
In this paper we show that highly skilled illegal migrants may be more likely to return home than migrants with low or no skills when illegality causes skill waste, i.e. reduced ability of making use of individual capabilities both in the labor and the financial markets. This result is in contrast with common wisdom on return migration, according to which low-skill individuals are more likely to go back home rather than high-skill migrants. The simple theoretical life-cycle framework that shows the former result is tested on a sample of illegal migrants crossing Italian borders in 2003. The estimation results confirm that highly skilled illegal migrants are more willing to return home.Illegal migration, labor skills, skill waste.
Self modulated dynamics of a relativistic charged particle beam in plasma wake field excitation
Self modulated dynamics of a relativistic charged particle beam is reviewed
within the context of the theory of plasma wake field excitation. The
self-consistent description of the beam dynamics is provided by coupling the
Vlasov equation with a Poisson-type equation relating the plasma wake potential
to the beam density. An analysis of the beam envelope self-modulation is then
carried out and the criteria for the occurrence of the instability are

Specifying and Analysing SOC Applications with COWS
COWS is a recently defined process calculus for specifying and combining service-oriented applications, while modelling their dynamic behaviour. Since its introduction, a number of methods and tools have been devised to analyse COWS specifications, like e.g. a type system to check confidentiality properties, a logic and a model checker to express and check functional properties of services. In this paper, by means of a case study in the area of automotive systems, we demonstrate that COWS, with some mild linguistic additions, can model all the phases of the life cycle of service-oriented applications, such as publication, discovery, negotiation, orchestration, deployment, reconfiguration and execution. We also provide a flavour of the properties that can be analysed by using the tools mentioned above
Classical and Quantum-like approaches to Charged-Particle Fluids in a Quadrupole
A classical description of the dynamics of a dissipative charged-particle
fluid in a quadrupole-like device is developed. It is shown that the set of the
classical fluid equations contains the same information as a complex function
satisfying a Schrodinger-like equation in which Planck's constant is replaced
by the time-varying emittance, which is related to the time-varying temperature
of the fluid. The squared modulus and the gradient of the phase of this complex
function are proportional to the fluid density and to the current velocity,
respectively. Within this framework, the dynamics of an electron bunch in a
storage ring in the presence of radiation damping and quantum-excitation is
recovered. Furthermore, both standard and generalized (including dissipation)
coherent states that may be associated with the classical particle fluids are

The effect of the Müller-Lyer illusion on saccades is modulated by spatial predictability and saccadic latency
Studies investigating the effect of visual illusions on saccadic eye movements have provided a wide variety of results. In this study, we test three factors that might explain this variability: the spatial predictability of the stimulus, the duration of the stimulus and the latency of the saccades. Participants made a saccade from one end of a Müller-Lyer figure to the other end. By changing the spatial predictability of the stimulus, we find that the illusion has a clear effect on saccades (16%) when the stimulus is at a highly predictable location. Even stronger effects of the illusion are found when the stimulus location becomes more unpredictable (19–23%). Conversely, manipulating the duration of the stimulus fails to reveal a clear difference in illusion effect. Finally, by computing the illusion effect for different saccadic latencies, we find a maximum illusion effect (about 30%) for very short latencies, which decreases by 7% with every 100 ms latency increase. We conclude that spatial predictability of the stimulus and saccadic latency influences the effect of the Müller-Lyer illusion on saccades
Entropic uncertainty relations for electromagnetic beams
The symplectic tomograms of 2D Hermite--Gauss beams are found and expressed
in terms of the Hermite polynomials squared. It is shown that measurements of
optical-field intensities may be used to determine the tomograms of
electromagnetic-radiation modes. Furthermore, entropic uncertainty relations
associated with these tomograms are found and applied to establish the
compatibility conditions of the the field profile properties with
Hermite--Gauss beam description. Numerical evaluations for some Hermite--Gauss
modes illustrating the corresponding entropic uncertainty relations are finally

Network-aware Evaluation Environment for Reputation Systems
Parties of reputation systems rate each other and use ratings to compute reputation scores that drive their interactions. When deciding which reputation model to deploy in a network environment, it is important to find the
most suitable model and to determine its right initial configuration. This calls for an engineering approach for describing, implementing and evaluating reputation
systems while taking into account specific aspects of both the reputation systems and the networked environment where they will run. We present a software tool (NEVER) for network-aware evaluation of reputation systems and their rapid prototyping through experiments performed according to user-specified parameters. To demonstrate effectiveness of NEVER, we analyse reputation models based on the beta distribution and the maximum likelihood estimation

In this paper we show that highly skilled undocumented migrants are more likely to return home than migrants with low or no skills when illegality causes skill waste, i.e. when illegality reduces the rate of return of individual capabilities (i.e. skills and human capital) in both the labor and the financial markets of the country of destination. This proposition is first illustrated in a simple life-cycle framework, where illegality acts as a tax on skills, and then is tested on a sample of apprehended immigrants that crossed unlawfully the Italian borders in 2003. The estimation confirms that the intention to return to the home country is more likely for highly skilled than low-skill illegal immigrants. The presence of migration networks in the destination country may lower the skill-waste effect. The empirical result of this paper contrasts with the common wisdom on return decisions of legal migrants, according to which low-skill individuals are more likely to go back home rather than highly skilled migrants
