The conduction pathway of potassium channels is water free under physiological conditions.
Ion conduction through potassium channels is a fundamental process of life. On the basis of crystallographic data, it was originally proposed that potassium ions and water molecules are transported through the selectivity filter in an alternating arrangement, suggesting a "water-mediated" knock-on mechanism. Later on, this view was challenged by results from molecular dynamics simulations that revealed a "direct" knock-on mechanism where ions are in direct contact. Using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance techniques tailored to characterize the interaction between water molecules and the ion channel, we show here that the selectivity filter of a potassium channel is free of water under physiological conditions. Our results are fully consistent with the direct knock-on mechanism of ion conduction but contradict the previously proposed water-mediated knock-on mechanism
Stabilized hot electron bolometer heterodyne receiver at 2.5 THz
We report on a method to stabilize a hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixer at 2.5 THz. The technique utilizes feedback control of the local oscillator (LO) laser power by means of a swing-arm actuator placed in the optical beam path. We demonstrate that this technique yields a factor of 50 improvement in the spectroscopic Allan variance time which is shown to be over 30 s in a 12 MHz noise fluctuation bandwidth. Furthermore, broadband signal direct detection effects may be minimized by this technique. The technique is versatile and can be applied to practically any local oscillator at any frequency
Low-noise 0.8-0.96- and 0.96-1.12-THz superconductor-insulator-superconductor mixers for the Herschel Space Observatory
Heterodyne mixers incorporating Nb SIS junctions and NbTiN-SiO/sub 2/-Al microstrip tuning circuits offer the lowest reported receiver noise temperatures to date in the 0.8-0.96- and 0.96-1.12-THz frequency bands. In particular, improvements in the quality of the NbTiN ground plane of the SIS devices' on-chip microstrip tuning circuits have yielded significant improvements in the sensitivity of the 0.96-1.12-THz mixers relative to previously presented results. Additionally, an optimized RF design incorporating a reduced-height waveguide and suspended stripline RF choke filter offers significantly larger operating bandwidths than were obtained with mixers that incorporated full-height waveguides near 1 THz. Finally, the impact of junction current density and quality on the performance of the 0.8-0.96-THz mixers is discussed and compared with measured mixer sensitivities, as are the relative sensitivities of the 0.8-0.96- and 0.96-1.12-THz mixers
Energy spectrum of the relativistic Dirac-Morse problem
We derive an elegant analytic formula for the energy spectrum of the
relativistic Dirac-Morse problem, which has been solved recently. The new
formula displays the properties of the spectrum more vividly.Comment: Replaced with a more potrable PDF versio
Current Results of the EC-sponsored Catchment Modelling (CatchMod) Cluster
To support the Water Framework Directive implementation, much research has been commissioned at both national and European levels. CatchMod is a cluster of these projects, which is focusing on the development of computational catchment models and related tools. This paper presents an overview of the results of the CatchMod cluster to dat
Active local oscillator power stabilization for a hot electron bolometer heterodyne receiver
We report on the application of a new technique for actively stabilizing the power of a far infrared gas laser as the local oscillator (LO) in a superconducting hot electron bolometer (HEB) heterodyne receiver system at 2.5 THz. The technique utilizes PID feedback control of the local oscillator intensity by means of a voice-coil based swing arm actuator placed in the beam path. The HEB itself is used as a direct detector to measure incident LO power whilst simultaneously continuing to function as heterodyne mixer. Results presented here demonstrate a factor of 50 improvement in the measured total power and spectroscopic Allan variance time. Allan times of 30 seconds and 25 seconds respectively are shown for large and small area HEB's with a measured effective noise fluctuation bandwidth of 12 MHz. The technique is versatile and can be applied to any LO source and at any LO frequency
Electron heating by photon-assisted tunneling in niobium terahertz mixers with integrated niobium titanium nitride striplines
We describe the gap voltage depression and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics in pumped niobium superconductor-insulator-superconductor junction with niobium titanium nitride tuning stripline by introducing an electron heating power contribution resulting from the photon-assisted tunneling process. Theoretical fits using the extended Tien-Gordon theory are obtained that reproduce the most salient features of the pumped I-V characteristics. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics
Refined Factorizations of Solvable Potentials
A generalization of the factorization technique is shown to be a powerful
algebraic tool to discover further properties of a class of integrable systems
in Quantum Mechanics. The method is applied in the study of radial oscillator,
Morse and Coulomb potentials to obtain a wide set of raising and lowering
operators, and to show clearly the connection that link these systems.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX file, no figure
Observation of Andreev Reflection Enhanced Shot Noise
We have experimentally investigated the quasiparticle shot noise in
NbN/MgO/NbN superconductor - insulator - superconductor tunnel junctions. The
observed shot noise is significantly larger than theoretically expected. We
attribute this to the occurrence of multiple Andreev reflection processes in
pinholes present in the MgO barrier. This mechanism causes the current to flow
in large charge quanta (Andreev clusters), with a voltage dependent average
value of m = 1+ 2 Delta/eV times the electron charge. Because of this charge
enhancement effect, the shot noise is increased by the factor m.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures include
