Probability Density of the Multipole Vectors for a Gaussian Cosmic Microwave Background
We review Maxwell's multipole vectors, and elucidate some of their
mathematical properties, with emphasis on the application of this tool to the
cosmic microwave background (CMB). In particular, for a completely random
function on the sphere (corresponding to the statistically isotropic Gaussian
model of the CMB), we derive the full probability density function of the
multipole vectors. This function is used to analyze the internal configurations
of the third-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe quadrupole and octopole,
and we show the observations are consistent with the Gaussian prediction. A
particular aspect is the planarity of the octopole, which we find not to be

Towards Contextual Action Recognition and Target Localization with Active Allocation of Attention
Exploratory gaze movements are fundamental for gathering the most relevant information regarding the partner during social interactions. We have designed and implemented a system for dynamic attention allocation which is able to actively control gaze movements during a visual action recognition task. During the observation of a partners reaching movement, the robot is able to contextually estimate the goal position of the partner hand and the location in space of the candidate targets, while moving its gaze around with the purpose of optimizing the gathering of information relevant for the task. Experimental results on a simulated environment show that active gaze control provides a relevant advantage with respect to typical passive observation, both in term of estimation precision and of time required for action recognition. © 2012 Springer-Verlag

The programming of sequences of saccades
Saccadic eye movements move the high-resolution fovea to point at regions of interest. Saccades can only be generated serially (i.e., one at a time). However, what remains unclear is the extent to which saccades are programmed in parallel (i.e., a series of such moments can be planned together) and how far ahead such planning occurs. In the current experiment, we investigate this issue with a saccade contingent preview paradigm. Participants were asked to execute saccadic eye movements in response to seven small circles presented on a screen. The extent to which participants were given prior information about target locations was varied on a trial-by-trial basis: participants were aware of the location of the next target only, the next three, five, or all seven targets. The addition of new targets to the display was made during the saccade to the next target in the sequence. The overall time taken to complete the sequence was decreased as more targets were available up to all seven targets. This was a result of a reduction in the number of saccades being executed and a reduction in their saccade latencies. Surprisingly, these results suggest that, when faced with a demand to saccade to a large number of target locations, saccade preparation about all target locations is carried out in paralle
Elastic and total reaction cross sections of oxygen isotopes in Glauber theory
We systematically calculate the total reaction cross sections of oxygen
isotopes, O, on a C target at high energies using the Glauber
theory. The oxygen isotopes are described with Slater determinants generated
from a phenomenological mean-field potential. The agreement between theory and
experiment is generally good, but a sharp increase of the reaction cross
sections from ^{21}O to ^{23}O remains unresolved. To examine the sensitivity
of the diffraction pattern of elastic scattering to the nuclear surface, we
study the differential elastic-scattering cross sections of proton-^{20,21,23}O
at the incident energy of 300 MeV by calculating the full Glauber amplitude.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Entropy and information in neural spike trains: Progress on the sampling problem
The major problem in information theoretic analysis of neural responses and
other biological data is the reliable estimation of entropy--like quantities
from small samples. We apply a recently introduced Bayesian entropy estimator
to synthetic data inspired by experiments, and to real experimental spike
trains. The estimator performs admirably even very deep in the undersampled
regime, where other techniques fail. This opens new possibilities for the
information theoretic analysis of experiments, and may be of general interest

The New ‘Hidden Abode’: Reflections on Value and Labour in the New Economy
In a pivotal section of Capital, volume 1, Marx (1976: 279) notes that, in order to understand the capitalist production of value, we must descend into the ‘hidden abode of production’: the site of the labour process conducted within an employment relationship. In this paper we argue that by remaining wedded to an analysis of labour that is confined to the employment relationship, Labour Process Theory (LPT) has missed a fundamental shift in the location of value production in contemporary capitalism. We examine this shift through the work of Autonomist Marxists like Hardt and Negri, Lazaratto and Arvidsson, who offer theoretical leverage to prize open a new ‘hidden abode’ outside employment, for example in the ‘production of organization’ and in consumption. Although they can open up this new ‘hidden abode’, without LPT's fine-grained analysis of control/resistance, indeterminacy and structured antagonism, these theorists risk succumbing to empirically naive claims about the ‘new economy’. Through developing an expanded conception of a ‘new hidden abode’ of production, the paper demarcates an analytical space in which both LPT and Autonomist Marxism can expand and develop their understanding of labour and value production in today's economy. </jats:p
