Development of a Mass Flowmeter based on the Coriolis Acceleration for Liquid, Supercritical and Superfluid Helium
Beginning in the 1980's, Coriolis meters have gained generalised acceptance in liquid applications with a worldwide installed base of over 300,000 units. To meet the demands of cryogenic applications below 20 K, off-the-shelf Coriolis meters have been used, with minor design modifications and operational changes. The meters were originally calibrated on water and tested on liquid helium at 4.5 K, supercritical helium around 5 K and superfluid helium below 2 K. The meters maintain their intrinsic robustness and accuracy of better than 1% of measured value; accuracy is independent of density and temperature
Large magnetoresistance using hybrid spin filter devices
A magnetic "spin filter" tunnel barrier, sandwiched between a non-magnetic
metal and a magnetic metal, is used to create a new magnetoresistive tunnel
device, somewhat analogous to an optical polarizer-analyzer configuration. The
resistance of these trilayer structures depends on the relative magnetization
orientation of the spin filter and the ferromagnetic electrode. The spin
filtering in this configuration yields a previously unobserved

Electron microscopy of nanoparticle superlattice formation at a solid-liquid interface in nonpolar liquids
Nanoparticle superlattice films form at the solid-liquid interface and are important for mesoscale materials, but are notoriously difficult to analyze before they are fully dried. Here, the early stages of nanoparticle assembly were studied at solid-liquid interfaces using liquid-phase electron microscopy. Oleylamine-stabilized gold nanoparticles spontaneously formed thin layers on a silicon nitride (SiN) membrane window of the liquid enclosure. Dense packings of hexagonal symmetry were obtained for the first monolayer independent of the nonpolar solvent type. The second layer, however, exhibited geometries ranging from dense packing in a hexagonal honeycomb structure to quasi-crystalline particle arrangements depending on the dielectric constant of the liquid. The complex structures formed by the weaker interactions in the second particle layer were preserved, while the surface remained immersed in liquid. Fine-tuning the properties of the involved materials can thus be used to control the three-dimensional geometry of a superlattice including quasi-crystals
Electron paramagnetic resonance knight shift in semimagnetic (diluted magnetic) semiconductors
The effect of the carrier concentration induced shift of the g factor (the Knight shift) of the Mn2+ magnetic moment in PbTe and SnTe semiconducting matrices is experimentally observed and is of different sign for n- and for p-type crystals. The analysis of this effect allows for a straightforward determination of both the sign and the magnitude of the free carrier–local moment exchange integrals for holes and electrons in PbTe, as well as for light and heavy holes in SnTe
Magnetic anisotropy in Pb_{1-x-y}Sn_{y}Mn_{x}Te studied by ferromagnetic resonance
Proceedings of the XXII International School of Semiconducting Compounds, Jaszowiec 1993 We will report on the anisotropy in (Pb)SnMnTe, studied by ferromagnetic resonance. We have found a cubic anisotropy with a = 73 Ă— 10-4 cm-1 for Sn1-xMnxTe and a = 200 Ă— 10-4 cm-1 for Pb0.28-xSn0.72MnxTe. We will indicate some possible explanations for this anomalously large anisotropy
Standardized videos in addition to the surgical curriculum in Medical Education for surgical clerkships:a cohort study
BACKGROUND: Medical students are expected to translate the theoretical knowledge gained during their study to practical knowledge during the clerkships. A surgical educational platform with standardized videos may be the solution. However, the effects of a structured online video-based platform in addition to the standard curriculum on students’ self-reported and tested surgical knowledge during the surgical clerkship must be assessed. METHODS: Fourth-year medical students (n = 178) participated in a 6-week course of theoretical and practical training followed by a 10-week in-hospital clerkship in the Erasmus University Medical Center (Erasmus MC), Rotterdam, The Netherlands and 11 affiliated general hospitals. Ninety students followed the usual surgical curriculum (control group), followed by 88 students who were given voluntary access to a video-based surgical educational platform of Incision Academy (video group). At the start (T0) and end (T1) of the clerkship, both groups filled out a surgical knowledge test and a survey regarding their self-reported surgical knowledge and their access to available study sources. Supervisors were blinded and surveyed concerning students’ performance and their acquired knowledge. We analyzed the data using paired and unpaired student t-tests and linear regression. RESULTS: At the end of the clerkship, students in the video group indicated that they had better resources at their disposal than the control group for surgical procedures (p = 0.001). Furthermore, students in the video group showed a greater increase in self-reported surgical knowledge during their clerkship (p = 0.03) and in more objectively tested surgical knowledge (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: An online surgical educational platform with standardized videos is a valuable addition to the current surgical curriculum according to students and their supervisors. It improves their test scores and self-reported surgical knowledge. Students feel better prepared and more able to find the information necessary to complete the clerkship. Optical absorption in commercial single mode optical fibres for the LHC machine
The optical absorption of light at 1310 nm and 1550 nm in various commercially available Single Mode (SM) fibres samples has been studied. The absorption was measured as a function of dose, dose rate, temperature and light power. The samples were irradiated with gamma rays from a 60Co source and exposed to a complex radiation field from high energy physics. One fibre sample with an F-doped core exhibits extreme low absorption of light at 1310 nm during irradiation up to doses of at least 100 kGy
Segmentation and classification of leukocytes using neural networks: a generalization direction
In image digital processing, as in other fields, it is commonly difficult to simultaneously achieve a generalizing system and a specialistic system. The segmentation and classification of leukocytes is an application where this fact is evident. First an exclusively supervised approach to segmentation and classification of blood white cells images is shown. As this method produces some drawbacks related to the specialistic/generalized problems, another process formed by two neural networks is proposed. One is an unsupervised network and the other one is a supervised neural network. The goal is to achieve a better generalizing system while still doing well the role of a specialistic system. We will compare the performance of the two approaches
