The very fast evolution of Sakurai's object
V4334 Sgr (a.k.a. Sakurai's object) is the central star of an old planetary
nebula that underwent a very late thermal pulse a few years before its
discovery in 1996. We have been monitoring the evolution of the optical
emission line spectrum since 2001. The goal is to improve the evolutionary
models by constraining them with the temporal evolution of the central star
temperature. In addition the high resolution spectral observations obtained by
X-shooter and ALMA show the temporal evolution of the different morphological

Learning Action Cell Implementation in the Philippine Public Schools: A Descriptive Phenomenological Study
Philippine DepEd Order (DO) #35, s. 2016, institutionalized the Learning Action Cell (LAC) in public schools. The policyâs key objective is to improve teachersâ teaching competence. Conversely, there needs to be more literature, specifically in the Davao City public schools, to account for its implementation since its inception. Thus, this study. The study aimed to propose a LAC implementation model for the Davao City public schoolâs division. It made use of qualitative, descriptive phenomenological research design. Ten (10) participants were involved, and they participated in the focus group discussion and key informant interviews. The proposed LAC implementation model focused on the studentsâ learning as its definitive goal. It can be realized if the teachersâ teaching skills are enhanced, and the LAC implementation is well implemented. Correspondingly, the proposed model emphasizes supportive leadership, teachersâ positive attitudes, well-defined roles and responsibilities, sufficient resources, systematic procedures, and well-disseminated policy. One of the studyâs recommendations is for future researchers to study the impact of the continuous improvement model adopted in the implementation of LAC in the DepEd schools on the learning quality of the students and the school improvement. Wood allocation trade-offs between fiber wall, fiber lumen, and axial parenchyma drive drought resistance in neotropical trees
Functional relationships between wood density and measures of xylem hydraulic safety and efficiency are ambiguous, especially in wet tropical forests. In this meta-analysis, we move beyond wood density per se and identify relationships between xylem allocated to fibers, parenchyma, and vessels and measures of hydraulic safety and efficiency. We analyzed published data of xylem traits, hydraulic properties and measures of drought resistance from neotropical tree species retrieved from 346 sources. We found that xylem volume allocation to fiber walls increases embolism resistance, but at the expense of specific conductivity and sapwood capacitance. Xylem volume investment in fiber lumen increases capacitance, while investment in axial parenchyma is associated with higher specific conductivity. Dominant tree taxa from wet forests prioritize xylem allocation to axial parenchyma at the expense of fiber walls, resulting in a low embolism resistance for a given wood density and a high vulnerability to drought-induced mortality. We conclude that strong trade-offs between xylem allocation to fiber walls, fiber lumen, and axial parenchyma drive drought resistance in neotropical trees. Moreover, the benefits of xylem allocation to axial parenchyma in wet tropical trees might not outweigh the consequential low embolism resistance under more frequent and severe droughts in a changing climate.Peer reviewe
Contrasting adaptation of xylem to dehydration in two Vitis vinifera L. sub-species
Xylem hydraulic properties of agricultural crop species can be linked to their region of origin, but because crop systems are often irrigated to reach optimum quality and yield, key differences in drought resistance are not often considered. We investigated how hydraulic conductivity and xylem vulnerability to drought-induced cavitation of two grapevine cultivars correspond to their centers of domestication with 'Merlot' (Vitis vinifera subspecies occidentalis) having been domesticated in a temperate forest region, and 'Thompson Seedless' (Vitis vinifera subspecies orientalis) domesticated in a semi-arid region. We used anatomical measurements and xylem vulnerability curves to evaluate hydraulic traits and drought resistance. Our results showed that 'Thompson Seedless' was significantly more vulnerable to drought-induced cavitation than 'Merlot'. Bench dehydration produced significantly different estimations of xylem vulnerability to cavitation in each cultivar. This result was consistent with anatomical measurement, with 'Thompson Seedless' stems having greater maximum stem-specific hydraulic conductivity, more vessels, higher vessel density and a greater lumen fraction than 'Merlot'. The relatively large amount of xylem vessels and lumen area in 'Thompson Seedless' is consistent with domestication in a semi-arid habitat where a greater number and size diversity of xylem vessels would be needed to transport water and meet evaporative demand as opposed to cultivars that were domesticated in temperate forest regions like 'Merlot'. These differences appear to expose 'Thompson Seedless' to high xylem vulnerability to cavitation
Comparative In Vitro Dissolution Profile of Commercial Azithromycin Dihydrate 500 mg Tablet Preparations in the Philipppines
This study seeks to compare the in vitro multi-point dissolution profiles between 3 off-patent products azithromycin dihydrate 500 mg and the innovator product. The paddle-type dissolution apparatus was used. This was rotated at a speed of 50 rpm using 0.1-N HCl as media. Random samples were withdrawn after certain time points and assayed for azithromycin dihydrate. Comparision between test samples and the innovator product was done by computing their similarity (f 1 ) and disimilarity (f 2 ) factors and by fitting them to various kinetics of drug release during dissolution. Test samples 1 and 3 were comparable to the innovator product because they complied with f 1 and f 2 specifications. Test sample 2, however, gave higher f 2 values making it non-equivalent with the innovator product. The Higuchi and Korsmeyer-Peppa kinetics of drug release characterized most of the dissolution profiles. This study showed that test samples 1 and 3 are equivalent with the innovator products in terms of comparative in vitro dissolution profiles where extra-Fickian release behaviors was exhibited by all the preparations
A kapwa-infused paradigm in teaching Catholic theology/catechesis in a multireligious classroom in the Philippines
The increasing religious diversity in educational space has raised a legitimate question on how Catholic theology/ catechesis must be taught in Philippine Catholic universities given the institutional mandate to educate students âinto the faith of the Church through teaching of Christian doctrine in an organic and systematic wayâ (Wuerl, 2013, 1). On this note, the paper makes reference to âcentered plural- ismâ (CP), a positional posture espoused by Georgetown University in dealing with this predicament. In an attempt to (re) appropriate CP into local context, there is a need to explore the Filipino conception of self/others as enveloped within the indigenous concept of kapwa. Hereon, the paper finds that CP is not just feasibly suitable in local context but with kapwa's more inclusive description of the relationship of self and others, a CPâbased teaching paradigm in theology/ catechesis is a promising project in the educational scene of the Philippines
Elliptical Galaxies with Emission Lines from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present the results of 11 elliptical galaxies with strong nebular emission
lines during our study of star formation history along the Hubble sequence.
After removing the dilution from the underlying old stellar populations by use
of stellar population synthesis model, we derive the accurate fluxes of all
emission lines for these objects, which are later classified with emission line
ratios into one Seyfert 2, six LINERs and four HII galaxies. We also identify
one HII galaxy (A1216+04) as a hitherto unknown Wolf-Rayet galaxy from the
presence of the Wolf-Rayet broad bump at 4650 \AA. We propose that the
star-forming activities in elliptical galaxies are triggered by either
galaxy-galaxy interaction or the merging of a small satellite/a massive star
cluster, as already suggested by recent numerical simulations
The impact of scaling up cervical cancer screening and treatment services among women living with HIV in Kenya: a modelling study
Introduction: We aimed to quantify health outcomes and programmatic implications of scaling up cervical cancer (CC) screening and treatment options for women living with HIV in care aged 18â65 in Kenya. Methods: Mathematical model comparing from 2020 to 2040: (1) visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and cryotherapy (Cryo); (2) VIA and Cryo or loop excision electrical procedure (LEEP), as indicated; (3) human papillomavirus (HPV)-DNA testing and Cryo or LEEP; and (4) enhanced screening technologies (either same-day HPV-DNA testing or digitally enhanced VIA) and Cryo or LEEP. Outcomes measured were annual number of CC cases, deaths, screening and treatment interventions, and engaged in care (numbers screened, treated and cured) and fiveâyearly age-standardised incidence. Results: All options will reduce CC cases and deaths compared with no scale-up. Options 1â3 will perform similarly, averting approximately 28â000 (33%) CC cases and 7700 (27%) deaths. That is, VIA screening would yield minimal losses to follow-up (LTFU). Conversely, LTFU associated with HPV-DNA testing will yield a lower care engagement, despite better diagnostic performance. In contrast, option 4 would maximise health outcomes, averting 43â200 (50%) CC cases and 11â800 (40%) deaths, given greater care engagement. Yearly rescreening with either option will impose a substantial burden on the health system, which could be reduced by spacing out frequency to three yearly without undermining health gains. Conclusions: Beyond the specific choice of technologies to scale up, efficiently using available options will drive programmatic success. Addressing practical constraints around diagnosticsâ performance and LTFU will be key to effectively avert CC cases and deaths
A photometric and spectroscopic study of dwarf and giant galaxies in the Coma cluster - V. Dependence of the spectroscopic properties on location in the cluster
We investigate the radial dependence of the spectroscopic properties, in
particular the Mg2, and H beta spectroscopic indices, in a sample of
galaxies spanning a wide range of absolute luminosity in the Coma cluster.
After allowing for the magnitude dependence of these indices, we find a
significant gradient in Mg2, in the sense that galaxies in the core of the
cluster have stronger Mg2. We find only weak gradients in and H beta.
Using the model grids presented in an earlier paper in this series, we
attribute the Mg2 gradient to changes in metal abundance. One possible
mechanism to create this abundance gradient is pressure confinement by the
intracluster medium of material from Supernova driven winds early in the

The ASEAN Economic Community and the Philippines: Implementation, Outcomes, Impacts, and Ways Forward (Full Report)
As 2015 draws near, assessing ASEAN's progress toward the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) defined by the AEC Blueprint is necessary and instructive. This paper constitutes the Mid-Term Review (MTR) of the AEC Blueprint for the Philippines. The Philippines Country Report presents the results of the surveys related to the MTR on areas including trade liberalization and facilitation, services and investment liberalization, labor mobility, and agriculture. In assessing the progress of implementation of the country's commitments under the AEC, a scorecard mechanism is applied. The report also covers two case studies as well as discussions on the role of the private sector and SMEs, and concludes with recommendations to raise the implementation rate of the AEC measures in the country.Overall, the survey results demonstrate how the AEC and the AEC Blueprint could address some of the issues that have constrained private sector response to the opportunities provided by greater openness in the Philippines, particularly the complex and inefficient administrative processes and procedures, and lack of effective competition in key sectors of the economy. While the Philippines has demonstrated its commitment to the AEC and the AEC Blueprint, key measures still need to be realized, particularly those that relate to services liberalization, customs integration, and ratification of transport protocols and agreements. The analyses of the study have demonstrated the benefits of the accomplishment of AEC measures in the Philippines, particularly those that precisely addressed the key institutional weaknesses faced by the private sector. Further delays in implementation could be costly for the country
