Genotype influence on shelf life behaviour of minimal processed loquat (Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl.) fruit: the role of sugar, acid organics and phenolic compounds
Background: Loquat cultivars cultivated in Southern Italy are very appreciated by consumers for their sensorial characteristics, such as persistent aroma and taste. Apposite maturity indexes for peeling and processing loquat fruit were investigated to increase diffusion of minimally processed loquat. The genotype’s effect on the minimally processed loquat fruit shelf life and quality harvested at commercial maturity (80% yellow color) was investigated on peeled fruit stored at 5 °C for 10 days. The role of sugars, organic acids and phenols composition was observed through in depth qualitative analysis. In addition, several qualitative analyses were carried out to determine the quality of minimal processed fruit. Results: Loquat fruits harvested at commercial ripening stage performed very good palatability and flesh color persistency. Late ripening fruits genotypes shown a low rate of pulp oxidation and quality decay, while early ripening fruits were not suitable for fresh-cut. Genotype had a great influence on weight loss, β-carotene content, fruit respiration, ascorbic acid and total phenols content during the shelf life. Conclusions: This work shows how the amount of the composition of sugars and organic acids as an intrinsic characteristic of genotype influences the quality of loquat fruits minimal processed. The higher values of glucose, sorbitol and ascorbic acid accumulated in the cv ‘Nespolone Trabia’ contributed to a reduction in chilling injury and oxidative stress after cutting. Comparison performance of visible-nir and near-infrared hyperspectral imaging for prediction of nutritional quality of goji berry (Lycium barbarum l.)
The potential of hyperspectral imaging for the prediction of the internal composition of goji berries was investigated. The prediction performances of models obtained in the Visible-Near Infrared (VIS-NIR) (400–1000 nm) and in the Near Infrared (NIR) (900–1700 nm) regions were compared. Analyzed constituents included Vitamin C, total antioxidant, phenols, anthocyanin, soluble solids content (SSC), and total acidity (TA). For vitamin C and AA, partial least square regression (PLSR) combined with different data pretreatments and wavelength selection resulted in a satisfactory prediction in the NIR region obtaining the R2pred value of 0.91. As for phenols, SSC, and TA, a better performance was obtained in the VIS-NIR region yielding the R2pred values of 0.62, 0.94, and 0.84, respectively. However, the prediction of total antioxidant and anthocyanin content did not give satisfactory results. Conclusively, hyperspectral imaging can be a useful tool for the prediction of the main constituents of the goji berry (Lycium barbarum L.)
Optimal control of atom transport for quantum gates in optical lattices
By means of optimal control techniques we model and optimize the manipulation
of the external quantum state (center-of-mass motion) of atoms trapped in
adjustable optical potentials. We consider in detail the cases of both non
interacting and interacting atoms moving between neighboring sites in a lattice
of a double-well optical potentials. Such a lattice can perform
interaction-mediated entanglement of atom pairs and can realize two-qubit
quantum gates. The optimized control sequences for the optical potential allow
transport faster and with significantly larger fidelity than is possible with

Feasibility study for the surface prediction and mapping of phytonutrients in minimally processed rocket leaves (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) during storage by hyperspectral imaging
A comprehensive study of the feasibility of hyperspectral imaging in visible (400–1000 nm) and near infrared (900–1700 nm) regions was investigated for prediction and concentration mapping of Vitamin C, ascorbic acid (AA), dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA) and phenols in wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) over a storage span of 12 days at 5 °C. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) with different data pretreatments and wavelength selection resulted in satisfactory predictions for all parameters in the NIR range except DHAA. Prediction models were used for concentration mapping to follow changes over time. The prediction maps will be comprehensively study to assess the pixel to pixel variation within the rocket leaves. The PLSR models for Vitamin C, AA and phenols yielded an R2 of 0.76, 0.73 and 0.78, respectively in external prediction with root mean square errors approximately equivalent to those of reference analysis. Conclusively, hyperspectral imaging, with the correct mapping approach, can be a useful tool for the prediction and mapping of phytonutrients in wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) over time
Using chemometrics to characterise and unravel the near infra-red spectral changes induced in aubergine fruit by chilling injury as influenced by storage time and temperature
The early non-destructive detection of chilling injury (CI) in aubergine fruit was investigated using spectroscopy. CI is a physiological disorder that occurs when the fruit is subjected to temperatures lower than 12 °C. Reference measurements of CI were acquired by visual appearance analysis, measuring electrolyte leakage (EL), mass loss and firmness evaluations which demonstrated that even before three days of storage at 2 °C, the CI process was initiated. An ANOVA-simultaneous component analysis (ASCA) was used to investigate the effect of temperature and storage time on the Fourier transform – near infra-red (FT-NIR) spectral fingerprints. The ASCA model demonstrated that temperature, duration of storage, and their interaction had a significant effect on the spectra. In addition, it was possible to highlight the main variations in the experimental results with reference to the effects of the main factors, and with respect to storage time, to discover any major monotonic trends with time. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used as a supervised classification method to discriminate between fruit based on chilling and safe temperatures. In this case, only significant spectral wavebands which were significantly influenced by the effect of temperature based on ASCA were utilised. PLS-DA prediction accuracy was 87.4 ± 2.7% as estimated by a repeated double-cross-validation procedure (50 runs) and the significance of the observed discrimination was verified by means of permutation tests. The outcomes of this study indicate a promising potential for near infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS) to provide non-invasive, rapid and reliable detection of CI in aubergine fruit
Application of Opuntia ficus-indica Mucilage and Aloe Gel-Based Edible Coating to Enhance Postharvest Quality and Microbiological Aspects of Fresh Figs (Ficus carica L.)
Fig is a widespread crop in southern Italy, highly valued for its sweet flavor. However, its consumption as a fresh product is limited to three to four days after harvest because of its high susceptibility to quality loss and microbial contamination. The combined use of low temperature and a modified atmosphere is the traditional preservation method. However, several studies have shown that the use of Aloe arborescens or vera and O. ficus-indica (OFI) mucilage as an edible coating could reduce the microbial load and water loss, respectively. Therefore, our study aimed to evaluate the synergistic effects of Aloe gel (AG) and O. ficus-indica mucilage (OM) on the quality and safety of two fig cultivars, 'San Giovanni' and 'Melanzana', during cold storage at 4 degrees C. The main results showed the effectiveness of edible coatings on both fig cultivars. An AG coating significantly reduced the microbial load, while the OM treatment showed the ability to preserve firmness and reduce weight loss. In addition, the combined OM + AG treatment showed the same effects as the individual coating formulations, also improving visual appearance. Thus, the use of the synergetic coating formulation could be a natural way to reduce the microbial load, extending fresh fig fruit's shelf life
Entanglement and correlation functions following a local quench: a conformal field theory approach
We show that the dynamics resulting from preparing a one-dimensional quantum
system in the ground state of two decoupled parts, then joined together and
left to evolve unitarily with a translational invariant Hamiltonian (a local
quench), can be described by means of quantum field theory. In the case when
the corresponding theory is conformal, we study the evolution of the
entanglement entropy for different bi-partitions of the line. We also consider
the behavior of one- and two-point correlation functions. All our findings may
be explained in terms of a picture, that we believe to be valid more generally,
whereby quasiparticles emitted from the joining point at the initial time

Exploring the Hard X-/soft gamma-ray Continuum Spectra with Laue Lenses
The history of X-ray astronomy has shown that any advancement in our
knowledge of the X-ray sky is strictly related to an increase in instrument
sensitivity. At energies above 60 keV, there are interesting prospects for
greatly improving the limiting sensitivity of the current generation of direct
viewing telescopes (with or without coded masks), offered by the use of Laue
lenses. We will discuss below the development status of a Hard X-Ray focusing
Telescope (HAXTEL) based on Laue lenses with a broad bandpass (from 60 to 600
keV) for the study of the X-ray continuum of celestial sources. We show two
examplesof multi-lens configurations with expected sensitivity orders of
magnitude better ( photons cm s keV
at 200 keV) than that achieved so far. With this unprecedented sensitivity,
