    Effective viscosity of grease ice in linearized gravity waves

    Grease ice is an agglomeration of disc-shaped ice crystals, named frazil ice, which forms in turbulent waters of the Polar Oceans and in rivers as well. It has been recognized that the properties of grease ice to damp surface gravity waves could be explained in terms of the effective viscosity of the ice slurry. This paper is devoted to the study of the dynamics of a suspension of disc-shaped particles in a gravity wave field. For dilute suspensions, depending on the strength and frequency of the external wave flow, two orientation regimes of the particles are predicted: a preferential orientation regime with the particles rotating in coherent fashion with the wave field, and a random orientation regime in which the particles oscillate around their initial orientation while diffusing under the effect of Brownian motion. For both motion regimes, the effective viscosity has been derived as a function of the wave frequency, wave amplitude and aspect ratio of the particles.     Methamphetamine abuse and “meth mouth” in Europe

    With easy chemical synthesis from its precursor, methamphetamine (MA) is now widespread in many countries. The abuse of methamphetamine is associated with several negative effects on health, because MA is a neurotoxin and a dangerous central nervous system stimulant. It changes levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, releasing dopamine and inhibiting nor epinephrine uptake which increases sympathetic nervous system activity and can lead to cardiac arrhythmia, hypertension and tachypnea. The consequences of MA abuse are clearly manifested in oral diseases (like “meth mouth”) which is characterised by extensive caries, teeth grinding with ensuing dental wear and trismus. The present review was designed to fill the gap in knowledge about methamphetamine abuse in the European Union (EU) and to illustrate the main clinical effects of prolonged use. After describing the pharmacology and systemic effects of methamphetamine and concentrating on its effects on the mouth, the present review compares the epidemiology and incidence of abuse in the world, particularly the USA and the EU

    Lights and shadows on the use of metformin in pregnancy: from the preconception phase to breastfeeding and beyond

    During pregnancy, the complex hormonal changes lead to a progressive decrease of insulin sensitivity that can drive the onset of gestational diabetes (GDM) or worsen an already-known condition of insulin resistance like type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and obesity, with complications for the mother and the fetus. Metformin during pregnancy is proving to be safe in a growing number of studies, although it freely crosses the placenta, leading to a fetal level similar to maternal concentration. The aim of this literature review is to analyze the main available evidence on the use of metformin during, throughout, and beyond pregnancy, including fertilization, lactation, and medium-term effects on offspring. Analyzed studies support the safety and efficacy of metformin during pregnancy. In pregnant women with GDM and type 2 diabetes, metformin improves obstetric and perinatal outcomes. There is no evidence that it prevents GDM in women with pregestational insulin resistance or improves lipid profile and risk of GDM in pregnant women with PCOS or obesity. Metformin could have a role in reducing the risk of preeclampsia in pregnant women with severe obesity, the risk of late miscarriages and preterm delivery in women with PCOS, and the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, increasing the clinical pregnancy rate in women with PCOS undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF/FIVET). Offspring of mothers with GDM exposed to metformin have no significant differences in body composition compared with insulin treatment, while it appears to be protective for metabolic and cardiovascular risk
