Design and Manufacturing of an APTF to Test Fluid Behaviour in Microgravity Environment

    Get PDF
The present paper deals with the design and manufacturing of an APTF (Advanced Plateau Tank Facility) in order to carrying out earth experiments, previous to space experiments, of fluid behaviour in microgravity environment. This work has been done in collaboration between Manufacturing and Microgravity Laboratories in the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and analyses the requirements and restrictions that must be considered for an APTF design and manufacture. Mechanism employed in each part of the prototype are described in detail, emphasising those that suppose new solutions rather previous designs

Molecular Dynamics simulations of Hydrogen Embrittlement: preliminary results

Hydrogen embrittlement is believed to be one of the main reasons for cracking of structures under stress. High strength steels in these structures often include a ferritic core made of alpha-iron (body centered cubic lattice). Previous work [1] was concerned with the interaction of atomic hydrogen with iron using first principles calculations. We studied the effect of interstitial hydrogen in the iron lattice and the stress induced by the interstitial hydrogen in the host lattice. In this paper we study the dynamical behaviour of hydrogen inside the iron lattice. Using ab-initio Molecular Dynamics we obtain hydrogen diffusion paths and by taking statistical averages we extract diffusion coefficients from Einstein’s equation. Depending on temperature, the diffusion path involve going through tetrahedral or octahedral sites. Simulations where a number of hydrogens occasionally coincide in one unit cell have been performed to elucidate the effect of interactions between hydrogen

A Plateau Tank Facility (PTF) for Liquid Bridge Experimentation by Using Buoyancy Technique for Microgravity Simulation

Plateau tank is just a reservoir filled with a liquid inside of which there is another immiscible liquid of the same density. The behaviour of the inner liquid can be studied in some respects as in weightlessness. Several Plateau tank facilities have been built-up in the last decade at Lamf/ETSIA. In this paper a new apparatus for liquid bridge experimentation in simulated microgravity conditions is presented. Such equipment allows to impose to the experimental configuration a wide range of controlled mechanical disturbances and incorporates appropriate diagnosis means. The apparatus' may be operated either manually or from a desktop computer to which a remote controller can be linked for telescience operation

Abstract This paper elaborates upon a methodological approach to land management in Pirapó, RS using techniques and analysis from the geographic information system (GIS). The research was developed on the basis of remote sensing in order to produce a diagnosis of the land use. Geotechnology softwares were used to evaluate the potential land use and monitoring techniques allowed for the identifi cation of the land use confl icts. Six kinds of confl icts were found, mapped and analyzed. A suggestion to reduce soil deterioration has been offered

In-SEM micro-machining reveals the origins of the size effect in the cutting energy

High-precision metal cutting is increasingly relevant in advanced applications. Such precision normally requires a cutting feed in the micron or even sub-micron dimension scale, which raises questions about applicability of concepts developed in industrial scale machining. To address this challenge, we have developed a device to perform linear cutting with force measurement in the vacuum chamber of an electron microscope, which has been utilised to study the cutting process down to 200 nm of the feed and the tool tip radius. The machining experiments carried out in-operando in SEM have shown that the main classical deformation zones of metal cutting: primary, secondary and tertiary shear zones—were preserved even at sub-micron feeds. In-operando observations and subsequent structural analysis in FIB/SEM revealed a number of microstructural peculiarities, such as: a substantial cutting force related to the development of the primary shear zone; dependence of the ternary shear zone thickness on the underlaying grain crystal orientation. Measurement of the cutting forces at deep submicron feeds and cutting tool apex radii has been exploited to discriminate different sources for the size effect on the cutting energy (dependence of the energy on the feed and tool radius). It was observed that typical industrial values of feed and tool radius imposes a size effect determined primarily by geometrical factors, while in a sub-micrometre feed range the contribution of the strain hardening in the primary share zone becomes relevant

    Approval consensus measures

In many realistic group decision making problems where a “representative” collective output must be produced, it is relevant to measure how much consensus this solution conveys to the group. Many aspects influence the final decision in group decision making problems. Two key issues are the experts’ individual opinions and the methodology followed to compute such a final decision (aggregation operators, voting systems, etc.). In this paper we consider situations where each member of a population decides upon approving or not approving each of a set of options. The experts express their opinions in a dichotomous way, e.g., because they intend to use approval voting. In order to measure the consensus or cohesiveness that the expression of the individual preferences conveys we propose the concept of approval consensus measure (ACM), which does not refer to any priors of the agents like preferences or other decision-making processes. Then we give axiomatic characterizations of two generic classes of ACMs
