Eating Habits of Young Persons for Healthy Aging: An Exploratory Study Involving University Students in Hong Kong

    No full text
Fruits and vegetables are important parts of healthy eating and they provide excellent sources of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber in our diet. Those who consume fruits and vegetables regularly have a reduced risk of many chronic diseases. According to the WHO, inadequate consumption of fruits and vegetables may have contributed to as much as 14% of gastrointestinal cancer deaths and 11% of deaths resulted from ischemic heart disease worldwide. Since 2011, Hong Kong has been promoting a “2 Plus 3 a day” diet campaign aiming to raise the general public's awareness on consuming a minimum of 2 portions of fruits and 3 portions of vegetables a day. However, recent statistics showed that nearly 81% of people aged 18 – 64 failed to meet this requirement. This paper focuses on investigating the determinants of fruits and vegetables consumption behavior among university students in Hong Kong

Midwifery, 1700-1800: the man-midwife as competitor

    No full text
This chapter charts the changes in the role of the midwife after 1700, in both urban and rural contexts. For women outside the major towns in particular, the midwife had not only been the main provider of care in childbirth, but had also traditionally worked in related areas: the disorders of children, and conditions affecting women’s bodies beyond those associated with giving birth. By 1800, the situation was very different. The cause was the rise of the man-midwife, who had succeeded in claiming control over the management not just of difficult births, but also of normal labour. This chapter focuses on three main themes: the rise of the man-midwife; the use of science to overcome moral objections to the involvement of men in childbirth; and the evolution of a new division of labour between the two occupational groups

    Interactive qualitative design

We review a number of cognitive artefacts we have invented and implemented between 1970 and the present day. Most were directed towards the qualitative stages of electronic circuit design but are equally applicable to other design domains. They are characterised by being interactive and highly responsive. The following artefacts are outlined: MINNIE design tool; CoCo design tool; Influence Explorer; and Prosection Matri

Crystal structure of the human vascular adhesion protein-1: Unique structural features with functional implications

    No full text
The expression of human vascular adhesion protein-1 (hVAP-1) is induced at sites of inflammation where extravasation of lymphocytes from blood to the peripheral tissue occurs. We have solved the X-ray structure of hVAP-1, a human copper amine oxidase (CAO), which is distinguished from other CAOs in being membrane-bound. The dimer structure reveals some intriguing features that may have fundamental roles in the adhesive and enzymatic functions of hVAP-1, especially regarding the role of hVAP-1 in inflammation, lymphocyte attachment, and signaling. Firstly, Leu469 at the substrate channel may play a key role in controlling the substrate entry; depending on its conformation, it either blocks or gives access to the active site. Secondly, sugar units are clearly observed at two of the six predicted N-glycosylation sites. Moreover, mutagenesis analysis showed that all of the predicted sites were glycosylated in the protein used for crystallization. Thirdly, the existence of a solvent-exposed RGD motif at the entrance to each active site in hVAP-1 suggests that it may have a functional role
