    Biology and Utilization of Anadromous Alosids: Annual progress report (October 1, 1971 - September 30, 1972)

    Fishing effort for herring and shad has been stable for the past three years in the lower Chesapeake Bay and tributaries. River herring catch in 1972 was slightly above the 1971 landings but continued to be very low. River herring landings in U.S. waters have declined as the c.atch has been increased by non-nationals. The catch per unit of effort has decreased from 122.5 in 1965 to 30.3 in 1972 in Virginia waters. Total mortality rates for river herring were without significant trend from 1965-1971. Twice as much towing effort was expended in 1972 as in other years. The abundance of juvenile alosids was much lower in 1972 than former years. The James once again led all rivers in alosid production

    Molecular genetics and pathophysiology of 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3 deficiency.

    Autosomal recessive mutations in the 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3 gene impair the formation of testosterone in the fetal testis and give rise to genetic males with female external genitalia. Such individuals are usually raised as females, but virilize at the time of expected puberty as the result of increases in serum testosterone. Here we describe mutations in 12 additional subjects/families with this disorder. The 14 mutations characterized to date include 10 missense mutations, 3 splice junction abnormalities, and 1 small deletion that results in a frame shift. Three of these mutations have occurred in more than 1 family. Complementary DNAs incorporating 9 of the 10 missense mutations have been constructed and expressed in reporter cells; 8 of the 9 missense mutations cause almost complete loss of enzymatic activity. In 2 subjects with loss of function, missense mutations testosterone levels in testicular venous blood were very low. Considered together, these findings strongly suggest that the common mechanism for testosterone formation in postpubertal subjects with this disorder is the conversion of circulating androstenedione to testosterone by one or more of the unaffected 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase isoenzymes

    Clinical and Immunomodulating Effects of Ketamine in Horses with Experimental Endotoxemia

    Background:  Ketamine has immunomodulating effects both in vitro and in vivo during experimental endotoxemia in humans, rodents, and dogs. Hypothesis:  Subanesthetic doses of ketamine will attenuate the clinical and immunologic responses to experimental endotoxemia in horses. Animals:  Nineteen healthy mares of various breeds. Methods:  Experimental study. Horses were randomized into 2 groups: ketamine-treated horses (KET; n = 9) and saline-treated horses (SAL; n = 10). Both groups received 30 ng/kg of lipopolysaccharide (LPS, Escherichia coli, O55:B5) 1 hour after the start of a continuous rate infusion (CRI) of racemic ketamine (KET) or physiologic saline (SAL). Clinical and hematological responses were documented and plasma concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and thromboxane B2 (TXB2) were quantified. Results:  All horses safely completed the study. The KET group exhibited transient excitation during the ketamine loading infusion (P \u3c .05) and 1 hour after discontinuation of administration (P \u3c .05). Neutrophilic leukocytosis was greater in the KET group 8 and 24 hours after administration of LPS (P \u3c .05). Minor perturbations of plasma biochemistry results were considered clinically insignificant. Plasma TNF-α and TXB2 production peaked 1.5 and 1 hours, respectively, after administration of LPS in both groups, but a significant difference between treatment groups was not demonstrated. Conclusions and Clinical Importance:  A subanesthetic ketamine CRI is well tolerated by horses. A significant effect on the clinical or immunologic response to LPS administration, as assessed by clinical observation, hematological parameters, and TNF-α and TXB2production, was not identified in healthy horses with the subanesthetic dose of racemic ketamine utilized in this study

    Thermocapillary actuation of liquid flow on chemically patterned surfaces

    We have investigated the thermocapillary flow of a Newtonian liquid on hydrophilic microstripes which are lithographically defined on a hydrophobic surface. The speed of the microstreams is studied as a function of the stripe width w, the applied thermal gradient |dT/dx| and the liquid volume V deposited on a connecting reservoir pad. Numerical solutions of the flow speed as a function of downstream position show excellent agreement with experiment. The only adjustable parameter is the inlet film height, which is controlled by the ratio of the reservoir pressure to the shear stress applied to the liquid stream. In the limiting cases where this ratio is either much smaller or much larger than unity, the rivulet speed shows a power law dependency on w, |dT/dx| and V. In this study we demonstrate that thermocapillary driven flow on chemically patterned surfaces can provide an elegant and tunable method for the transport of ultrasmall liquid volumes in emerging microfluidic technologies

    An X-ray view of absorbed INTEGRAL AGN

    Aims. We present a 0.2--200 keV broad-band study of absorbed AGN observed with INTEGRAL, XMM-Newton, Chandra and ASCA to investigate the continuum shape and the absorbing/reflecting medium properties. Methods. The sources are selected in the INTEGRAL AGN sample to have a 20--100 keV flux below 8×10−11\times10^{-11} \flux (5 mCrab), and are characterized by a 2--10 keV flux in the range (0.8--10)×10−11\times10^{-11} \flux. The good statistics allow us a detailed study of the intrinsic and reflected continuum components. In particular, the analysis performed on the combined broad-band spectra allow us to investigate the presence of Compton reflection features and high energy cut-off in these objects. Results. The column density of the absorbing gas establishes the Compton thin nature for three sources in which a measure of the absorption was still missing. The Compton thin nature of all the sources in this small sample is also confirmed by the diagnostic ratios F$x/F[OIII]. The Compton reflection components we measure, reflection continuum and iron line, are not immediately compatible with a scenario in which the absorbing and reflecting media are one and the same, i.e. the obscuring torus. A possible solution is that the absorption is more effective than reflection, e.g. under the hypothesis that the absorbing/reflecting medium is not uniform, like a clumpy torus, or that the source is observed through a torus with a very shallow opening angle. The high energy cut-off (a lower limit in two cases) is found in all sources of our sample and the range of values is in good agreement with that found in type 1 Seyfert galaxies. At lower energies there is clear evidence of a soft component (reproduced with a thermal and/or scattering model), in six objects.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Gas Accretion Traced in Absorption in Galaxy Spectroscopy

    The positive velocity shift of absorption transitions tracing diffuse material observed in a galaxy spectrum is an unambiguous signature of gas flow toward the host system. Spectroscopy probing, e.g., NaI D resonance lines in the rest-frame optical or MgII and FeII in the near-ultraviolet is in principle sensitive to the infall of cool material at temperatures ~ 100-10,000 K anywhere along the line of sight to a galaxy's stellar component. However, secure detections of this redshifted absorption signature have proved challenging to obtain due to the ubiquity of cool gas outflows giving rise to blueshifted absorption along the same sightlines. In this chapter, we review the bona fide detections of this phenomenon. Analysis of NaI D line profiles has revealed numerous instances of redshifted absorption observed toward early-type and/or AGN-host galaxies, while spectroscopy of MgII and FeII has provided evidence for ongoing gas accretion onto >5% of luminous, star-forming galaxies at z ~ 0.5-1. We then discuss the potentially ground-breaking benefits of future efforts to improve the spectral resolution of such studies, and to leverage spatially-resolved spectroscopy for new constraints on inflowing gas morphology.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures.     Family stories, public silence: Irish identity construction amongst the second-generation Irish in England

    Formal narratives of history, especially that of colonial oppression, have been central to the construction of national identities in Ireland. But the Irish diasporic community in Britain has been cut off from the reproduction of these narratives, most notably by their absence from the curriculum of Catholic schools, as result of the unofficial 'denationalisation' pact agreed by the Church in the 19th century (Hickman, 1995). The reproduction of Irish identities is largely a private matter, carried out within the home through family accounts of local connections, often reinforced by extended visits to parent/s 'home' areas. Recapturing a public dimension has often become a personal quest in adulthood, 'filling in the gaps'. This paper explores constructions of narratives of nation by a key diasporic population, those with one or two Irish-born parents. It places particular emphasis on varying regional/national contexts within which such constructions take place, drawing on focus group discussions and interviews for the ESRC-funded Irish 2 Project in five locations — London, Glasgow, Manchester, Coventry and Banbury
