Brane Cosmology Solutions with Bulk Scalar Fields
Brane cosmologies with static, five-dimensional and Z_2 symmetric bulks are
analysed. A general solution generating mechanism is outlined. The qualatitive
cosmological behaviour of all such solutions is determined. Conditions for
avoiding naked bulk singularities are also discussed. The restrictions placed
on the solutions by the assumption of such a static bulk are investigated. In
particular the requirement of a non-standard energy-momentum conservation law.
The failure of such solutions to provide viable quintessence terms in the
Friedmann equations is also discussed.Comment: 15 pages, references added, minor change
Applications of p-deficiency and p-largeness
We use Schlage-Puchta's concept of p-deficiency and Lackenby's property of
p-largeness to show that a group having a finite presentation with p-deficiency
greater than 1 is large, which implies that Schlage-Puchta's infinite finitely
generated p-groups are not finitely presented. We also show that for all primes
p at least 7, any group having a presentation of p-deficiency greater than 1 is
Golod-Shafarevich, and has a finite index subgroup which is Golod-Shafarevich
for the remaining primes. We also generalise a result of Grigorchuk on Coxeter
groups to odd primes.Comment: 23 page
Magnetic effects in a holographic Fermi-like liquid
We explore the magnetic properties of the Fermi-like liquid represented by
the D3-D7' system. The system exhibits interesting magnetic properties such as
ferromagnetism and an anomalous Hall effect, which are due to the Chern-Simons
term in the effective gravitational action. We investigate the spectrum of
quasi-normal modes in the presence of a magnetic field and show that the
magnetic field mitigates the instability towards a striped phase. In addition,
we find a critical magnetic field above which the zero sound mode becomes

Darboux Transformations, Infinitesimal Symmetries and Conservation Laws for Nonlocal Two-Dimensional Toda Lattice
The technique of Darboux transformation is applied to nonlocal partner of
two-dimensional periodic A_{n-1} Toda lattice. This system is shown to admit a
representation as the compatibility conditions of direct and dual
overdetermined linear systems with quantized spectral parameter. The
generalization of the Darboux transformation technique on linear equations of
such a kind is given. The connections between the solutions of overdetermined
linear systems and their expansions in series at singular points neighborhood
are presented. The solutions of the nonlocal Toda lattice and infinite

Spin-zero anomaly in the magnetic quantum oscillations of a two-dimensional metal
We report on an anomalous behavior of the spin-splitting zeros in the de
Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) signal of a quasi-two-dimensional organic
superconductor. The zeros as well as the angular dependence of the amplitude of
the second harmonic deviate remarkably from the standard Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK)
prediction. In contrast, the angular dependence of the fundamental dHvA
amplitude as well as the spin-splitting zeros of the Shubnikov-de Haas signal
follow the LK theory. We can explain this behavior by small chemical-potential
oscillations and find a very good agreement between theory and experiment. A
detailed wave-shape analysis of the dHvA signal corroborates the existence of
an oscillating chemical potential
Constraints on relaxation rates for N-level quantum systems
We study the constraints imposed on the population and phase relaxation rates
by the physical requirement of completely positive evolution for open N-level
systems. The Lindblad operators that govern the evolution of the system are
expressed in terms of observable relaxation rates, explicit formulas for the
decoherence rates due to population relaxation are derived, and it is shown
that there are additional, non-trivial constraints on the pure dephasing rates
for N>2. Explicit experimentally testable inequality constraints for the
decoherence rates are derived for three and four-level systems, and the
implications of the results are discussed for generic ladder-, Lambda- and

Atomic Deuterium Adsorbed on the Surface of Liquid Helium
We investigate deuterium atoms adsorbed on the surface of liquid helium in
equilibrium with a vapor of atoms of the same species. These atoms are studied
by a sensitive optical method based on spectroscopy at a wavelength of 122 nm,
exciting the 1S-2P transition. We present a direct measurement of the
adsorption energy of deuterium atoms on helium and show evidence for the
existence of resonantly enhanced recombination of atoms residing on the surface

Quantum Limits of Stochastic Cooling of a Bosonic Gas
The quantum limits of stochastic cooling of trapped atoms are studied. The
energy subtraction due to the applied feedback is shown to contain an
additional noise term due to atom-number fluctuations in the feedback region.
This novel effect is shown to dominate the cooling efficiency near the
condensation point. Furthermore, we show first results that indicate that

CD21-Positive Follicular Dendritic Cells A Possible Source of PrP\u3csup\u3eSc\u3c/sup\u3e in Lymph Node Macrophages of Scrapie-Infected Sheep
Natural sheep scrapie is a prion disease characterized by the accumulation of PrPSc in brain and lymphoid tissues. Previous studies suggested that lymph node macrophages and follicular dendritic cells (FDC) accumulate PrPSc. In this study, lymph nodes were analyzed for the presence of PrPSc and macrophage or FDC markers using dual immunohistochemistry. A monoclonal antibody (mAb) to the C-terminus of PrP reacted with CD172a+ macrophages and CD21+ FDC processes in secondary follicles. However, a PrP N-terminus- specific mAb reacted with CD21+ FDC processes but not CD172a+ macrophages in secondary follicles. Neither the PrP N-terminus nor C-terminus-specific mAb reacted with CD172a+ macrophages in the medulla. These results indicate that lymph node follicular macrophages acquire PrPSc by phagocytosis of CD21+ FDC processes. The results also suggest that follicular macrophages have proteases that process full-length PrPSc to N-terminally truncated PrPSc
