Design detail verification tests for a lightly loaded open-corrugation graphite-epoxy cylinder
Flat corrugated graphite-epoxy panels were tested in compression to verify selected design details of a ring-stiffened cylinder that was designed to support an axial compressive load of 157.6 kN/m without buckling. Three different sizes of subcomponent panels, with the same basic corrugation geometry, were tested: (1) 60.96-cm-long by 45.72-cm-wide panels to evaluate the local buckling strength of the shell wall design; (2) 91.44-cm-long by 45.72-cm-wide panels to evaluate a longitudinal joint and the load-introduction method; and (3) 254.0-cm-long by 91.44-cm-wide panels with four simulated-ring stiffeners to evaluate the ring-attachment method. The test results indicate that the modified shell-wall design, the longitudinal joint, the load-introduction method, and the stiffener-attachment method for the proposed cylinder have adequate strength to support the design load
Analysis of shear test method for composite laminates
An elastic plane stress finite element analysis of the stress distributions in four flat test specimens for in-plane shear response of composite materials subjected to mechanical or thermal loads is presented. The shear test specimens investigated include: slotted coupon, cross beam, losipescu, and rail shear. Results are presented in the form of normalized shear contour plots for all three in-plane stess components. It is shown that the cross beam, losipescu, and rail shear specimens have stress distributions which are more than adequate for determining linear shear behavior of composite materials. Laminate properties, core effects, and fixture configurations are among the factors which were found to influence the stress distributions
The application of acoustic emission technique to fatigue crack measurement
The applicability of acoustic emission technique to measure fatigue cracks in aluminum alloy specimens was investigated. There are several variables, such as the metallurgical and the physical treatment of the specimen, that can affect the level of acoustic activity of a fatigue specimen. It is therefore recommended that the acoustic emission technique be supplemented by other nondestructive evaluation methods to obtain quantitative data on crack growth

Studies of uncontrolled air traffic patterns, phase 1
The general aviation air traffic flow patterns at uncontrolled airports are investigated and analyzed and traffic pattern concepts are developed to minimize the midair collision hazard in uncontrolled airspace. An analytical approach to evaluate midair collision hazard probability as a function of traffic densities is established which is basically independent of path structure. Two methods of generating space-time interrelationships between terminal area aircraft are presented; one is a deterministic model to generate pseudorandom aircraft tracks, the other is a statistical model in preliminary form. Some hazard measures are presented for selected traffic densities. It is concluded that the probability of encountering a hazard should be minimized independently of any other considerations and that the number of encounters involving visible-avoidable aircraft should be maximized at the expense of encounters in other categories
Do Solar Neutrino Experiments Imply New Physics?
None of the 1000 solar models in a full Monte Carlo simulation is consistent
with the results of the chlorine or the Kamiokande experiments. Even if the
solar models are forced artifically to have a \b8 neutrino flux in agreeement
with the Kamiokande experiment, none of the fudged models agrees with the
chlorine observations. The GALLEX and SAGE experiments, which currently have
large statistical uncertainties, differ from the predictions of the standard

Handling qualities of a wide-body transport airplane utilizing Pitch Active Control Systems (PACS) for relaxed static stability application
Piloted simulation studies have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of two pitch active control systems (PACS) on the flying qualities of a wide-body transport airplane when operating at negative static margins. These two pitch active control systems consisted of a simple 'near-term' PACS and a more complex 'advanced' PACS. Eight different flight conditions, representing the entire flight envelope, were evaluated with emphasis on the cruise flight conditions. These studies were made utilizing the Langley Visual/Motion Simulator (VMS) which has six degrees of freedom. The simulation tests indicated that (1) the flying qualities of the baseline aircraft (PACS off) for the cruise and other high-speed flight conditions were unacceptable at center-of-gravity positions aft of the neutral static stability point; (2) within the linear static stability flight envelope, the near-term PACS provided acceptable flying qualities for static stabilty margins to -3 percent; and (3) with the advanced PACS operative, the flying qualities were demonstrated to be good (satisfactory to very acceptable) for static stabilty margins to -20 percent
