Higher-order mutual coherence of optical and matter waves
We use an operational approach to discuss ways to measure the higher-order
cross-correlations between optical and matter-wave fields. We pay particular
attention to the fact that atomic fields actually consist of composite
particles that can easily be separated into their basic constituents by a
detection process such as photoionization. In the case of bosonic fields, that
we specifically consider here, this leads to the appearance in the detection
signal of exchange contributions due to both the composite bosonic field and
its individual fermionic constituents. We also show how time-gated counting
schemes allow to isolate specific contributions to the signal, in particular
involving different orderings of the Schr\"odinger and Maxwell fields.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

Offsite environmental monitoring report: Radiation monitoring around United States nuclear test areas, calendar year 1993
This report describes the Offsite Radiation Safety Program conducted during 1993 by the Environmental Protection Agency`s (EPA`s) Environmental Monitoring Systems Laboratory - Las Vegas (EMSL-LV). This laboratory operates an environmental radiation monitoring program in the region surrounding the Nevada Test Site (NTS) and at former test sites in Alaska, Colorado, Mississippi, Nevada, and New Mexico. The surveillance program is designed to measure levels and trends of radioactivity, if present, in the environment surrounding testing areas to ascertain whether current radiation levels and associated doses to the general public are in compliance with existing radiation protection standards. The surveillance program additionally has the responsibility to take action to protect the health and well being of the public in the event of any accidental release of radioactive contaminants. Offsite levels of radiation and radioactivity are assessed by sampling milk, water, and air; by deploying thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) and using pressurized ionization chambers (PICs); by biological monitoring of foodstuffs including animal tissues and food crops; and by measurement of radioactive material deposited in humans
The Virtual International Stroke Trials Archive
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke has global importance and it causes an increasing amount of human suffering and economic burden, but its management is far from optimal. The unsuccessful outcome of several research programs highlights the need for reliable data on which to plan future clinical trials. The Virtual International Stroke Trials Archive aims to aid the planning of clinical trials by collating and providing access to a rich resource of patient data to perform exploratory analyses.
METHODS: Data were contributed by the principal investigators of numerous trials from the past 16 years. These data have been centrally collated and are available for anonymized analysis and hypothesis testing.
RESULTS: Currently, the Virtual International Stroke Trials Archive contains 21 trials. There are data on \u3e15,000 patients with both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Ages range between 18 and 103 years, with a mean age of 69+/-12 years. Outcome measures include the Barthel Index, Scandinavian Stroke Scale, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, Orgogozo Scale, and modified Rankin Scale. Medical history and onset-to-treatment time are readily available, and computed tomography lesion data are available for selected trials.
CONCLUSIONS: This resource has the potential to influence clinical trial design and implementation through data analyses that inform planning
Input-output theory for fermions in an atom cavity
We generalize the quantum optical input-output theory developed for optical
cavities to ultracold fermionic atoms confined in a trapping potential, which
forms an "atom cavity". In order to account for the Pauli exclusion principle,
quantum Langevin equations for all cavity modes are derived. The dissipative
part of these multi-mode Langevin equations includes a coupling between cavity
modes. We also derive a set of boundary conditions for the Fermi field that
relate the output fields to the input fields and the field radiated by the
cavity. Starting from a constant uniform current of fermions incident on one
side of the cavity, we use the boundary conditions to calculate the occupation
numbers and current density for the fermions that are reflected and transmitted
by the cavity
Quantum Limits of Stochastic Cooling of a Bosonic Gas
The quantum limits of stochastic cooling of trapped atoms are studied. The
energy subtraction due to the applied feedback is shown to contain an
additional noise term due to atom-number fluctuations in the feedback region.
This novel effect is shown to dominate the cooling efficiency near the
condensation point. Furthermore, we show first results that indicate that

The Scale of Cosmic Isotropy
The most fundamental premise to the standard model of the universe, the
Cosmological Principle (CP), states that the large-scale properties of the
universe are the same in all directions and at all comoving positions.
Demonstrating this theoretical hypothesis has proven to be a formidable
challenge. The cross-over scale R_{iso} above which the galaxy distribution
becomes statistically isotropic is vaguely defined and poorly (if not at all)
quantified. Here we report on a formalism that allows us to provide an
unambiguous operational definition and an estimate of R_{iso}. We apply the
method to galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7,
finding that R_{iso}\sim 150h^{-1} Mpc. Besides providing a consistency test of
the Copernican principle, this result is in agreement with predictions based on
numerical simulations of the spatial distribution of galaxies in cold dark

The effect of extra dimensions on gravity wave bursts from cosmic string cusps
We explore the kinematical effect of having extra dimensions on the gravity
wave emission from cosmic strings. Additional dimensions both round off cusps,
and reduce the probability of their formation. We recompute the gravity wave
burst, taking into account these two factors, and find a potentially

Gossip in organisations: Contexts, consequences and controversies
This article examines the key themes surrounding gossip including its contexts, the various outcomes (positive and negative) of gossip as well as a selection of challenges and controversies. The challenges which are highlighted revolve around definitional issues, methodological approaches, and ethical considerations. Our analysis suggests that the characteristics and features of gossip lend itself to a process-oriented approach whereby the beginning and, particularly, end points of gossip are not always easily identified. Gossip about a subject or person can temporarily disappear only for it to re-surface at some later stage. In addition, questions pertaining to the effects of gossip and ethical-based arguments depend on the nature of the relationships within the gossip triad (gossiper, listener/respondent and target)
Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children Participant Grocery Store Purchases during the COVID-19 Pandemic in North Carolina
Background: Families participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) experienced barriers to accessing healthy food during the COVID-19 pandemic, but we do not yet understand how WIC participant food purchases shifted during the pandemic. Objectives: We aimed to describe the association between the initial shock of the pandemic in March 2020 and WIC shoppers’ food purchases and changes in purchases before and during the pandemic at a top grocery chain and examine differences in these relationships by duration of WIC use. Methods: We used longitudinal food transaction data from WIC shoppers (n = 2,989,116 shopper-month observations from 175,081 unique WIC shoppers) from 496 stores in a top grocery store chain in North Carolina between October 2019 and May 2021. We used an interrupted time series design to describe the following: 1) the relationship between the initial shock of the pandemic and WIC shopper food purchases and 2) differences in purchases before and during the pandemic. To assess differences in purchases between shoppers consistently using WIC electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards and shoppers starting or stopping WIC EBT use during the pandemic, we used models stratified by WIC group. Primary outcomes were share (%) of total calories purchased from fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes (FV), processed foods, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Results: We observed small decreases in the share of total calories from FV (−0.4%) and small increases in the share of calories from processed food (1.1%) and SSBs (0.5%) purchased at this retailer when comparing the pre and post March 2020 periods. Compared with shoppers that started or stopped using WIC benefits during the pandemic, shoppers that used WIC benefits consistently had slightly higher FV and lower processed food and SSB purchases at this retailer. Conclusions: Future studies should examine whether additional supports for nutrient-dense food choices may be needed for families with low incomes in public health emergencies
