    Hydrostatic pressure study of single-crystalline UNi0.5Sb2

    We studied single-crystals of the antiferromagnetic compound UNi0.5Sb2 (TN ~ 161 K) by means of measurements of magnetic susceptibility (chi), specific heat (Cp), and electrical resistivity (rho) at ambient pressure, and resistivity under hydrostatic pressures up to 20 kbar, in the temperature range from 1.9 to 300 K. The thermal coefficient of the electrical resistivity (drho/dT) changes drastically from positive below TN to negative above, reflecting the loss of spin-disorder scattering in the ordered phase. Two small features in the rho vs T data centered near 40 and 85 K correlate well in temperature with features in the magnetic susceptibility and are consistent with other data in the literature. These features are quite hysteretic in temperature, i.e., the difference between the warming and cooling cycles are about 10 and 6 K, respectively. The effect of pressure is to raise TN at the approximate rate of 0.76 K/kbar, while progressively suppressing the amplitude of the small features in rho vs T at lower temperatures and increasing the thermal hysteresis.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figues, 2007-mmm conferenc

    Mammals of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas: a 60-year followup to Brumwell (1951)

    More than 60 years have elapsed since Brumwell\u27s (1951) comprehensive assessment during 193911940 of resident terrestrial vertebrates from Fort Leavenworth Military Rooervation in northeastern Kansas. Subsequent studies have been accomplished for the amphibians, reptiles, and birds. Our study is the first to assess intervening changes in the mammalian composition of this diverse local fauna. Notable observations include: the decline or extirpation of the black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus), Franklin\u27s ground squirrel (Spermophilus franklinii), muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus), long-tailed weasel (Mustela frenata) and eastern spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius); the return or recovery of locally extirpated gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), puma (Puma concolor), and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), the increases of the once uncommon eastern chipmunk (Tamias striatus) and striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis), the invasion and establishment of the hispid cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus), and the displacement of the eastern fox squirrel (Sciurus niger) by the eastern gray squirrel (S. carolinensis) as the most common squirrel. Documented species either not mentioned by Brumwell (1951) or listed by him as hypothetically occurring on the post, included northern myotis (Myotis septentrionalis), eastern pipistrelle (Pipistrellus subflavus), evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis), southern bog lemming (Synaptomys cooperi), and meadow jumping mouse (Zapus hudsonius)

    Site-selection model for optimal transplantation of eelgrass Zostera marina in the northeastern US

    A site-selection model for eelgrass Zostera marina L. ecosystem restoration was developed in the northeastern US to select optimal areas for transplanting eelgrass. The site-selection model synthesizes available historic and literature-based information, reference data, and simple field measurements to identify and prioritize locations for large-scale eelgrass transplantation. Model development was based on the physical and biological characteristics associated with the most successful transplant sites in a mitigation project for the New Hampshire Port Authority. The site-selection process is divided into 3 phases: (1) the first phase uses available environmental information to formulate a preliminary transplant suitability index (PTSI) for pre-screening and eliminating unsuitable sites; (2) the second phase involves field measurements of light availability and bioturbation as well as survival and growth of test transplants at priority sites identified by the PTSI; (3) a transplant suitability index (TSI) score is calculated for each site based on the PTSI and the results of field assessments. The TSI is a multiplicative index that eliminates sites which receive ratings of zero and gives high scores to those sites with the greatest potential for successful transplantation. We applied the TSI post hoc to the New Hampshire Port Project¹s eelgrass transplant sites, and subsequently the site-selection model was used in an eelgrass restoration project in New Bedford Harbor, Massachusetts. After 2 yr of transplanting, the New Bedford Harbor effort has resulted in success at 62% of the sites planted using the site-selection model

    Characterization of skeletal muscle effects associated with daptomycin in rats

    Daptomycin is a lipopeptide antibiotic with strong bactericidal effects against Gram-positive bacteria and minor side effects on skeletal muscles. The type and magnitude of the early effect of daptomycin on skeletal muscles of rats was quantified by histopathology, examination of contractile properties, Evans Blue Dye uptake, and effect on the patch repair process. A single dose of daptomycin of up to 200 mg/kg had no effect on muscle fibers. A dose of 150 mg/kg of daptomycin, twice per day for 3 days, produced a small number of myofibers (≤0.22%) with loss of plasma membrane integrity and/or infiltration by neutrophils and/or macrophages. Multiple doses of daptomycin are required for a quantifiable effect on skeletal muscles of rats. Some fibers were Evans Blue Dye–positive but were not yet infiltrated by neutrophils.
