How We Die Now: Intimacy and the Work of Dying takes the reader on an engaging journey through the terrain of aging in America, with an emphasis on how our ideas about aging itself have changed the way we view death in the United States and even the way we actually die. This book has an authenticity to it, as Erickson admits that her own experience with aging and death compelled her to enter this world and study from the perspective of insiders, those who care for older adults and the actual elders themselves. Based on hundreds of hours of participant observation and in-depth interviews with eldercare workers and older adults themselves, Erickson critiques our societal response to what she calls the longevity dividend. Although life expectancy has clearly increased, she suggests that we have not made good use of the extra time. The experience of living longer has many consequences for caregiving, quality of life, long-term care, and at the end, how we approach death

A Case Report of Coronavirus Disease 2019 Presenting with Tremors and Gait Disturbance
Introduction: Neurologic symptoms present as significant complications of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. This report describes a novel manifestation of tremors triggered by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection.Case Presentation: We describe a case of a 46-year-old man with COVID-19 infection complicated by a bilateral intention tremor and wide-based gait. Although neurological manifestations have been reported related to COVID-19, tremulousness has not yet been described.Conclusion: Considering the evolving diversity of neurologic manifestations in this infection, emergency physicians should be vigilant of possible COVID-19 infection in patients presenting with unexplained neurologic symptoms
Social Work, Yoga, and Gratitude: Partnership in a Homeless Shelter
This narrative explores the personal lessons learned about life and practice from YogaHome, a yoga program for homeless adults. The yoga program, taught in partnership by a social worker/professor of social work (Jenny) and a yoga teacher (Jean) with 17 years of experience, exemplifies the merging of social work and yogic practices , but also illustrates the evolution of these two professionals in their chosen fields as many of their traditional views, values, intentions, and expectations unraveled and led to a re-revaluation of their professional practices, transforming their personal perspectives on life. This reflection is based on the YogaHome program, originally planned as a six-week intervention that is still going strong after 16 months
YogaHome: Emotional, Physical and Social Impacts of a Yoga Program on Community Homeless Shelter Residents
This article reports on a qualitative analysis of semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted with 12 women and 2 men who participated in a community-based yoga program, run by a certified yoga teacher and a social worker, at a homeless shelter in a medium-sized city in the Midwestern United States. This restorative yoga program was developed in the shelter in response to the severe stress of being homeless and the chaotic nature of shelter life. Based on an analysis of transcribed interviews, the following themes were generated and discussed: Yoga as Relaxation, Stress Relief, Pain Relief, and Future Practice. The challenges and adaptations used when working with this population were stressed so that other programs might be developed to address the mental and physical health and social needs of the sheltered homeless

Internal chaos in an open quantum system: From Ericson to conductance fluctuations
The model of an open Fermi-system is used for studying the interplay of
intrinsic chaos and irreversible decay into open continuum channels. Two
versions of the model are characterized by one-body chaos coming from disorder
or by many-body chaos due to the inter-particle interactions. The continuum
coupling is described by the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Our main
interest is in specific correlations of cross sections for various channels in
dependence on the coupling strength and degree of internal chaos. The results
are generic and refer to common features of various mesoscopic objects
including conductance fluctuations and resonance nuclear reactions.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Chaos assisted instanton tunneling in one dimensional perturbed periodic potential
For the system with one-dimensional spatially periodic potential we
demonstrate that small periodic in time perturbation results in appearance of
chaotic instanton solutions. We estimate parameter of local instability, width
of stochastic layer and correlator for perturbed instanton solutions.
Application of the instanton technique enables to calculate the amplitude of
the tunneling, the form of the spectrum and the lower bound for width of the
ground quasienergy zone
The Wilderness Expedition: An effective life course intervention to improve young peoples well-being and connectedness to nature
It is well understood that wilderness expeditions improve well-being; however, there is little supporting quantitative data. The aim of this study was to measure the impact of wilderness expeditions on self-esteem (SE) and connectedness to nature (CN) and assess whether benefits varied according to participant and expedition characteristics. SE and CN were assessed preâ and postâwilderness expeditions in 130 adolescents using Rosenbergâs SE scale and the state CN scale. Two-way ANOVA revealed significant increases in SE and CN (p < .001) as a result of single expeditions. There was also an interaction effect of expedition and gender on SE (p < .05). Males had a higher SE at the start but female SE increased most. Linear regression revealed that living environment, gender, and the length and location of the expedition did not contribute to changes in SE and CN. Regular contact with natural environments will improve adolescent well-being, with the largest improvements in females
Momentum transfer using chirped standing wave fields: Bragg scattering
We consider momentum transfer using frequency-chirped standing wave fields.
Novel atom-beam splitter and mirror schemes based on Bragg scattering are
presented. It is shown that a predetermined number of photon momenta can be

ValiDichro: a website for validating and quality control of protein circular dichroism spectra
Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is widely used in structural biology as a technique for examining the structure, folding and conformational changes of proteins. A new server, ValiDichro, has been developed for checking the quality and validity of CD spectral data and metadata, both as an aid to data collection and processing and as a validation procedure for spectra to be included in publications. ValiDichro currently includes 25 tests for data completeness, consistency and quality. For each test that is done, not only is a validation report produced, but the user is also provided with suggestions for correcting or improving the data.
