Gun facilitates adhesive bonding of studs to surfaces
Gun facilitates adhesive bonding of thermoplastic-backed studs to smooth, hard surfaces. Such studs can be used for mounting loads where defacement with drilled holes cannot be tolerated. These studs can be easily removed by softening the plastic bonding with heat from the gun
Flow visualization study of a two-dimensional representation of the Space Shuttle launch pad configuration
The loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger was caused by the failure of the aft joint O-ring seals in its right solid rocket booster. It has been suggested by several sources that wind conditions through a reduction in temperature of the right solid rocket booster caused by the wind blowing across the cold external tank, played a role in the O-ring failure. To check the plausibility of the wind theory, an experiment was carried out in a water towing tank to visualize the flow past a two-dimensional model representing a cross section of the Space Shuttle launch configuration. The periodic formation of vortices was found to characterize the wake generated by the model. It is suggested that this organized motion in the flow is the dominant mechanism that accomplishes heat transfer from the external tank to the right solid rocket booster. Flow visualization results consisting of photographs that show instantaneous streamline patterns of the flow are presented
Prolongation of Friction Dominated Evolution for Superconducting Cosmic Strings
This investigation is concerned with cosmological scenarios based on particle
physics theories that give rise to superconducting cosmic strings (whose
subsequent evolution may produce stable loop configurations known as vortons).
Cases in which electromagnetic coupling of the string current is absent or
unimportant have been dealt with in previous work. The purpose of the present
work is to provide quantitative estimates for cases in which electromagnetic
interaction with the surrounding plasma significantly affects the string
dynamics. In particular it will be shown that the current can become
sufficiently strong for the initial period of friction dominated string motion
to be substantially prolonged, which would entail a reinforcement of the short
length scale end of the spectrum of the string distribution, with potentially
observable cosmological implications if the friction dominated scenario lasts
until the time of plasma recombination.Comment: 10 pages Late
Type Ia supernova diversity: Standardizing the candles
Future use of type Ia supernovae for cosmology aims not only to determine the
equation of state of dark energy, but also to constrain possible variations in
its value. To achieve this goal, supernovae need to become better calibrated
standard candles - not only to improve the precision of the measurement, but
more importantly to gain better control over systematic uncertainties in order
to ensure the accuracy of the result.
Here we report on a project to quantify the diversity in type Ia supernovae,
and to look for trends and/or sub-types that can be used to improve their
calibration as standard candles. We implement a version of principal component
analysis on type Ia supernova spectra. Although the quantity of data is not
sufficient to draw any firm conclusions we show that this method holds promise
for, at the very least, effectively separating peculiar supernovae. Whether it
can be further used to improve the calibration of normal type Ia's remains a
project for future study.Comment: Conference Proceedings. Cefalu 2006, The multicoloured landscape of

Unusual conductance of polyyne-based molecular wires
We report a full self-consistent ab initio calculation of the current-voltage
curve and the conductance of thiolate capped polyynes in contact with gold
electrodes. We find the conductance of polyynes an order of magnitude larger
compared with other conjugated oligomers. The reason lies in the position of
the Fermi level deep in the HOMO related resonance. With the conductance weakly
dependent on the applied bias and almost independent of the length of the
molecular chain, polyynes appear as nearly perfect molecular wires.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 3 table
First excited band of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate
The analytical expression of the fractional parentage coefficients for the
total spin-states of a spinor N-boson system has been derived. Thereby an
S-conserved theory for the spinor Bose-Einstein condensation has been proposed.
A set of equations has been established to describe the first excited band of
the condensates. Numerical solution for Na has been given as an example.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
