Preparing Tomorrow’s World Language Teacher Today: The Case for Seamless Induction

    Get PDF
This essay is a call to action. It offers a comprehensive overview of the challenges facing world language (WL) teacher educators and their employers, the K-12 schools, during the teacher induction period. We propose a new paradigm for WL teacher education based on national accreditation standards, best-practice pedagogy, insights from the professional literature on methods education, and the enhanced role of the methods instructor/supervisor. In order to become successful in the classroom, the pre-service educator undergoes a seamless period of induction that is student-centered and college/university-supported beyond the classroom arena

A chemical and petrological model of the lunar crust

Information is given on the composition and structure of the lunar crust. A lunar model is illustrated, indicating that it has essentially two layers, anorthositic mixed rocks overlaying a generally noritic crystalline basement. Implications relative to lunar evolution are discussed

Global petrologic variations of the Moon: A ternary-diagram approach

    Get PDF
A ternary-diagram approach is used to show on a single map as much detailed geochemical information concerning petrologic variations within the lunar crust as is possible. The classification map shows the global spatial distributions of end-member compositions, the transitional spatial relations between end-member compositions, and quantitative estimates of relative proportions of each end member at each pixel location within the orbital groundtracks. The use of elemental ratios in this analysis, instead of the commonly used elemental bivariate diagrams, shows geologic information that is otherwise hidden in individual elemental databases

Relationship between NOX4 level and angiotensin II signaling in Gitelman's syndrome. Implications with hypertension

Recent evidence showed that endogenous nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-oxidase 4 (NOX4) may exert a protective role on the cardiovascular system inducing vasodilation, reduction of blood pressure, and anti-proliferative actions. However, the functional significance of NOX4 in the cardiovascular system in humans remains elusive. Mononuclear cell levels of NOX4 were assessed by immunoblotting in 14 Gitelman's patients (GS), a unique human model of endogenous Ang II signaling antagonism and activation of anti-atherosclerotic and anti-remodeling defenses, and compared to 11 untreated essential hypertensive patients as well as to 11 healthy normotensive subjects. The association between NOX4 and its effector heme oxygenase (HO-1) (sandwich immunoassay) was also evaluated. NOX4 protein levels were decreased in hypertensive patients as compared to both GS and healthy subjects (1.06±0.31 AU vs. 1.76±0.54, P=0.002 and vs. 1.61±0.54, P=0.018, respectively). NOX4 protein level did not differ between GS and healthy subjects. HO-1 levels were increased in GS patients as compared to both hypertensive patients and healthy subjects (8.65±3.08 ng/ml vs 3.70±1.19, P<0.0001, and vs 5.49±1.04, P=0.008, respectively. NOX4 levels correlate with HO-1 levels only in GS (r(2)=0.63; P=0.001), (r(2)=0.088; P=ns, in hypertensive patients and r(2)=0.082; P=ns, in healthy subjects). Our findings show that NOX4 and its effector HO-1 are reduced in hypertensive patients compared to GS patients, a human model opposite to hypertension. Although the functional significance of NOX4 needs further clarification, our preliminary data in a unique human model of anti-atherosclerotic and anti-remodeling defenses activation, highlight the potentially protective role of NOX4 in the human cardiovascular system

Human retinal pigment epithelial cell line that retains epithelial characteristics after prolonged culture

Journal ArticlePURPOSE. A spontaneously arising, apparently transformed, cell line has been cloned from a primary culture of human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and has been subcultured more than 200 times. The similarities of these cells to human RPE cells in vivo have been determined. METHODS. The structure of the transformed cells has been determined by light and electron microscopy and by immunocytochemistry using antibodies that detect cytoskeletal and other proteins. The ability of the cell line to bind and phagocytose photoreceptor material has also been assessed by fluorescence and electron microscopy. The metabolism of all-trans-retinol has been investigated by incubation of the cells with 3H-all-trans-retinol and analysis of the metabolic products by high-performance liquid chromatography. RESULTS. The transformed cells possess an epithelial cobblestone morphology with intercellular junctional complexes containing N-cadherin. The cytoskeleton of these cells comprises cytokeratins that are characteristic of epithelial cells, together with actin, spectrin, and vimentin. The keratins expressed are those typical of RPE cells. The cells also express cellular retinaldehyde binding protein and retinol dehydrogenase activity but do not express retinoid isomerase or lecithin retinol acyl transferase activities. These cells also exhibit phagocytic activity. CONCLUSIONS. This cell line retains many of the metabolic and morphologic characteristics of RPE cells in vivo although there are some differences, particularly the loss of some enzymatic activities and cytoskeletal polarization. These cells should be useful in further studies of RPE cell metabolism and other functions

Examining the Role of Instructor-Student Relationship Quality in Yoga: Implications for Participants’ Motives, Stress, Affect, and Mindfulness

    Get PDF
Extensive research outlines a broad spectrum of physical and mental health benefits associated with participation in yoga. In particular, yoga can increase mindfulness as well as decrease anxiety, depression, and stress. However, knowledge of the underlying mechanisms and conditions for promoting positive outcomes requires further study. Limited research has examined how the quality of the relationship between the yoga student and instructor may influence potential health benefits derived from participation in yoga. The present study investigated associations between levels of stress, emotional well-being, motives for yoga, relationship quality, and mindfulness during yoga. Analysis of data collected from 219 adults indicated that higher levels of stress and negative emotional well-being increased the likelihood that yoga was practised to address psychological motives rather than perceived physical health benefits. Additionally, relationship quality with the instructor was found to predict greater state mindfulness during the yoga session. The present study highlights the importance of the relationship quality between instructor and student; future research investigating the efficacy of yoga in optimizing mental health should consider how health outcomes might be influenced by motives for participation and interpersonal relationships

The Platte as a Prairie River: A Response to Johnson and Boettcher

Johnson and Boettcher (2000) question the status of the presettlement Platte River as a prairie river, and they argue that it was a wooded river traversing a prairie landscape. Here we review evidence in support of the prairie river concept, suggesting the channels of the Platte were predominantly open and largely absent of trees. Direct support for a prairie river is found in the detailed map drawn by Lieutenant Woodbury in locating the site for Fort Kearny in 1847. Woodbury showed a thin strip of timber, located in an area that appeared to be elevated above the influence of active river flows. Woodbury also illustrated the main channel as having vegetated islands only in one location, with only a scattering [of] trees along the banks. Historical accounts, an examination of historical perspectives, the distribution of land survey witness trees, a lack of regeneration of trees following supposed deforestation, and population changes in bird distributions over the past 100 years also support the prairie river concept. We argue woodland development is not true restoration in this area. Given current conditions, we suggest that long term management should be for a mosaic of habitats for migratory birds and other species including 10% open river channel in the Big Bend reach of the Platte River in central Nebraska

Imaging Orbital-selective Quasiparticles in the Hund's Metal State of FeSe

Strong electronic correlations, emerging from the parent Mott insulator phase, are key to copper-based high temperature superconductivity (HTS). By contrast, the parent phase of iron-based HTS is never a correlated insulator. But this distinction may be deceptive because Fe has five active d-orbitals while Cu has only one. In theory, such orbital multiplicity can generate a Hund's Metal state, in which alignment of the Fe spins suppresses inter-orbital fluctuations producing orbitally selective strong correlations. The spectral weights ZmZ_m of quasiparticles associated with different Fe orbitals m should then be radically different. Here we use quasiparticle scattering interference resolved by orbital content to explore these predictions in FeSe. Signatures of strong, orbitally selective differences of quasiparticle ZmZ_m appear on all detectable bands over a wide energy range. Further, the quasiparticle interference amplitudes reveal that Zxy<Zxz<<ZyzZ_{xy}<Z_{xz}<<Z_{yz}, consistent with earlier orbital-selective Cooper pairing studies. Thus, orbital-selective strong correlations dominate the parent state of iron-based HTS in FeSe.Comment: for movie M1, see http://www.physik.uni-leipzig.de/~kreisel/osqp/M1.mp4, for movie M2, see http://www.physik.uni-leipzig.de/~kreisel/osqp/M2.mp4, for movie M3, see http://www.physik.uni-leipzig.de/~kreisel/osqp/M3.mp4, for movie M4, see http://www.physik.uni-leipzig.de/~kreisel/osqp/M4.mp4, for movie M5, see http://www.physik.uni-leipzig.de/~kreisel/osqp/M5.mp
