Stimulation of Beta Decay due to a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Nuclear processes can be stimulated by the presence of a macroscopic number of bosons in one of the final states. We describe the conditions necessary to observe the atom-stimulation of a beta decay process. The stimulation may be observable if it becomes possible to produce a Bose-Einstein condensate with the order of 101410^{14} atoms in a trap.Comment: 7 pages, LaTeX, uses elsart.cls, home page at http://online.anu.edu.au/Physics/Welcome.htm

There\u27s Only This: Atheism and the Search for Meaning in Ian McEwan\u27s Fiction

    Get PDF
In this thesis, I offer readings of Ian McEwan\u27s Enduring Love, Saturday, and The Children Act to study the relationship between meaning and faith. This is an important question because some New Atheists have pointed to McEwan\u27s work as proof that meaning is possible in the absence of God. In this thesis I suggest that while McEwan makes a strong case for the possibility of meaning through aesthetic experiences, he also complicates meaning by suggesting that it is only achievable in the context of belief in the irreducibility of ideas like love, beauty, and wonder

Exploring The Relationship Between Teacher Caring, Teacher Job Satisfaction, And Burnout In Alternative School Teachers

    Get PDF
This study explores the relationship between teacher caring, teacher job satisfaction, and burnout in Kentucky alternative school teachers. The methodology was a cross-sectional, correlational web-based survey. Instrumentation included the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI), Teven’s Teacher Self-Report of Caring Survey, and the Teacher Job Satisfaction Scale (McCroskey’s Generalized Belief Measure). The independent variables were the three sub-dimensions of the CBI: Personal Burnout, Work Related Burnout, and Client Related Burnout. The dependent variables were Teacher Caring and Teacher Job Satisfaction. For context, teachers were asked about the size, location, and type of school they served, and the length of their teaching experience in regular and alternative schools. Descriptive analysis, ANOVA, and regression analyses were completed. Findings indicated that caring was not related to burnout, and that burnout and teacher job satisfaction have a weak negative relationship. This research might add to the sparse amount of literature related to teacher caring, teacher job satisfaction, and burnout in alternative schools. Keywords: burnout, caring, Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, job satisfactio

An Examination of Compositional Techniques in Selected Organ Solo Compositions of Naji Hakim.

Naji Hakim is one of the most talented Lebanese composers of the latter half of the twentieth century residing in France. His prolific output includes works for varied media including organ solos, organ duos, chamber music for varied instrument and voice combinations, guitar quartets, orchestral works, and oratorios. The goal of this study is to examine the compositional techniques used by the composer in five of his major published works for solo organ written between 1983 and 1993. The compositions chosen are Memor, Rubaiyat, Hommage a Igor Stravinsky, The Embrace of Fire and Symphonie en Trois Mouvements. Hakim\u27s use of traditional formal structures, modified traditional formal structures, ostinati, modal scales, Gregorian chant, mathematical formulae, hocket techniques, quotation techniques, cyclical techniques, and minimalist techniques were investigated, and similarities to some of his contemporaries as well as older composers are discussed. The study concludes with a summary of the analysis and inferences drawn by the researcher

Associations Between Biochemical Markers of Cartilage Metabolism and Gait Biomechanics in Healthy Participants

    Get PDF
Introduction: Mechanical loading is associated with cartilage breakdown in people with knee osteoarthritis (KOA); it is unknown if this association exists in healthy young individuals. Purpose: Determine associations between biomarkers of collagen turnover (synthesis:breakdown) and peak vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) in healthy young individuals. Methods: Resting serum samples and walking gait kinetics were collected from 24 healthy, young individuals. Type II collagen synthesis (Collagen type II C- propeptide; CPII) and breakdown (Collagen type II cleavage product; C2C) were examined via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Gait kinetics were assessed during walking trials. Pearson product (r) moment correlations were used to determine associations between transformed (base-10 log scale) collagen turnover and peak vGRF. Results: 24 subjects (age=20±2 years, BMI=23.4±3.0) completed this study. There was a moderate association between CPII:C2C ratios and peak vGRF approaching significance (r= 0.363, p=0.081). Discussion: Higher loading in gait may increase collagen synthesis-to-degradation ratio in healthy young subjects.Master of Art

Discussion as a Bridge: Strategies that Engage Adolescent and Adult Learning Styles in the Postsecondary Classroom

Abstract: This essay examines areas where literacy researchers in secondary and postsecondary contexts have explored the use of classroom discussion for extending critical thinking and content comprehension among students. It provides an argument for the use of strategic conversations in postsecondary classrooms and outlines specific methods for planning and implementing class-based discussions aligned with areas of convergence between adolescent and adult learning theories

Quantum kinetic theory model of a continuous atom laser

    Get PDF
We investigate the feasible limits for realising a continuously evaporated atom laser with high-temperature sources. A plausible scheme for realising a truly continuous atom laser is to outcouple atoms from a partially condensed Bose gas, whilst continuously reloading the system with non-condensed thermal atoms and performing evaporative cooling. Here we use quantum kinetic theory to model this system and estimate feasible limits for the operation of such a scheme. For sufficiently high temperatures, the figure of merit for the source is shown to be the phase-space flux. The dominant process limiting the usage of sources with low phase-space flux is the three-body loss of the condensed gas. We conclude that certain double-magneto-optical trap (MOT) sources may produce substantial mean condensate numbers through continuous evaporation, and provide an atom laser source with a narrow linewidth and reasonable flux.Comment: 28 pages, 5 figure

Quantum depletion of collapsing Bose-Einstein condensates

    Get PDF
We perform the first numerical three-dimensional studies of quantum field effects in the Bosenova experiment on collapsing condensates by E. Donley et al. [Nature 415, 39 (2002)] using the exact experimental geometry. In a stochastic truncated Wigner simulation of the collapse, the collapse times are larger than the experimentally measured values. We find that a finite temperature initial state leads to an increased creation rate of uncondensed atoms, but not to a reduction of the collapse time. A comparison of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and Wigner methods for the more tractable spherical trap shows excellent agreement between the uncondensed populations. We conclude that the discrepancy between the experimental and theoretical values of the collapse time cannot be explained by Gaussian quantum fluctuations or finite temperature effects.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, replaced with published versio
