    Perfectionism and efficiency: Accuracy, response bias, and invested time in proof-reading performance

    Investigating problem-solving performance, Ishida, H. (2005: College students’ perfectionism and task-strategy inefficience: Why their efforts go unrewarded? Japanese Journal of Social Psychology, 20, 208–215) found high levels of perfectionism were associated with lower efficiency. Aiming to replicate and further explore this finding, the present study investigated how two dimensions of perfectionism (high standards, discrepancy between expectations and performance) predicted efficiency in proof-reading performance. N = 96 students completed a proof-reading task involving the detection of spelling, grammar, and format errors. When error-detection performance was subjected to signal detection analysis, high standards correlated positively with the number of incorrectly detected errors (false alarms). Moreover, when task-completion time was taken into account, high standards were negatively correlated with efficiency (accuracy/time). In comparison, discrepancy correlated negatively with the number of correctly detected errors (hits) and positively with a conservative response bias. The findings show that perfectionistic standards are associated with reduced efficiency demonstrating the importance of considering invested time, errors, and response bias when investigating the relationship between perfectionism and performance

    Mechanical correlates of the third heart sound

    AbstractIn seven chronically instrumented conscious dogs, micromanometers measured left ventricular pressure, and ultrasonic dimension transducers measured left ventricular minor-axis diameter; the latter recording was filtered to examine data between 20 and 100 Hz. Acceptable external heart sounds were recorded with a phonocardiographic microphone in four of the seven dogs. With each dog sedatede, intubated and mechanically ventilated, data were obtained during hemodynamic alterations produced by volume loading, phenylephrine, calcium infusion and vena caval occlusion.Damped oscillations were noted consistently in the left ventricular diameter waveform toward the end of rapid ventricular filling. These wall vibrations, assessed by the Altered diameter, correlated well with the third heart sound (S3) on the phonocardiogram. The peak frequency of the wall vibrations increased with increased diastolic pressure (p = 0.004), probably reflecting an increase in myocardlal wall stiffness. In contrast, the amplitude of the vibrations varid directly with left ventricular filling rate (p = 0.0001).Thus, S3seemed to be related specifically to ventricular wall vibrations during rapid filling, and the spectra of the amplitude-frequency relation shifted toward the audible range with increases in diastolic pressure, wall stiffness or filling rate. Spectral analysis of S3may be useful in assessing pathologic chances in myocardial wall properties

    Telepathology Networking in VISN-12 of the Veterans Health Administration

    The Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN)-12, headquartered in Chicago, has implemented a telepathology network between the eight VISN-12 hospital laboratories and Loyola University Medical School linked by an economical, high-speed wide-area network (WAN). Implementation of the WAN has reduced monthly telecommunications costs in VISN-12 by approximately 67%. In addition to telepathology, the WAN enables real-time teleradiology (general, computer tomography, and ultrasound), telefluoroscopy, telenuclear medicine imaging, telepsychiatry, and other forms of teleconsultation. Current applications of telepathology in VISN-12 include: primary diagnosis and consultation in surgical pathology, interpretation of serum protein electrophoresis and immunofixation gels, provision of support for consolidated microbiology laboratories, review of problematic peripheral blood smears, and distance learning. We have learned a variety of lessons from telepathology. The enthusiasm and technical skill of providers are essential for success. As well, frequent communication and rapid technical support are necessary.
