A new transdisciplinary research model to investigate and improve the health of the public
Transdisciplinary research approaches are being applied to today's complex health problems, including the climate crisis and widening inequalities. Diverse forms of disciplinary and experiential knowledge are required to understand these challenges and develop workable solutions. We aimed to create an updated model reflective of the strengths and challenges of current transdisciplinary health research that can be a guide for future studies. We searched Medline using terms related to transdisciplinary, health and research. We coded data deductively and inductively using thematic analysis to develop a preliminary model of transdisciplinary research. The model was tested and improved through: (i) a workshop with 27 participants at an international conference in Xiamen, China and (ii) online questionnaire feedback from included study authors. Our revised model recommends the following approach: (i) co-learning, an ongoing phase that recognizes the distributed nature of knowledge generation and learning across partners; (ii) (pre-)development, activities that occur before and during project initiation to establish a shared mission and ways of working; (iii) reflection and refinement to evaluate and improve processes and results, responding to emergent information and priorities as an ongoing phase; (iv) conceptualization to develop goals and the study approach by combining diverse knowledge; (v) investigation to conduct the research; (vi) implementation to use new knowledge to solve societal problems. The model includes linear and cyclical processes that may cycle back to project development. Our new model will support transdisciplinary research teams and their partners by detailing the necessary ingredients to conduct such research and achieve health impact
Mathematical stories: Why do more boys than girls choose to study mathematics at AS-level in England?
Copyright @ 2005 Taylor & FrancisIn this paper I address the question: How is it that people come to choose mathematics and in what ways is this process gendered? I draw on the findings of a qualitative research study involving interviews with 43 young people all studying mathematics in post-compulsory education in England. Working within a post-structuralist framework, I argue that gender is a project and one that is achieved in interaction with others. Through a detailed reading of Toni and Claudiaâs stories I explore the tensions for young women who are engaging in mathematics, something that is discursively inscribed as masculine, while (understandably) being invested in producing themselves as female. I conclude by arguing that seeing âdoing mathematicsâ as âdoing masculinityâ is a productive way of understanding why mathematics is so male dominated and by looking at the implications of this understanding for gender and mathematics reform work.This work is funded by the ESR
Point-of-care screening for a current Hepatitis C virus infection: influence on uptake of a concomitant offer of HIV screening
Eliminating hepatitis C as a public health threat requires an improved understanding of how to increase testing uptake. We piloted point-of-care testing (POCT) for a current HCV infection in an inner-city Emergency Department (ED) and assessed the influence on uptake of offering concomitant screening for HIV. Over four months, all adults attending ED with minor injuries were first invited to complete an anonymous questionnaire then invited to test in alternating cycles offering HCV POCT or HCV+HIV POCT. Viral RNA was detected in finger-prick blood by GeneXpert. 814/859 (94.8%) questionnaires were returned and 324/814 (39.8%) tests were accepted, comprising 211 HCV tests and 113 HCV+HIV tests. Offering concomitant HIV screening reduced uptake after adjusting for age and previous HCV testing (odds ratio 0.51; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.38â0.68; pâ<â0.001). HCV prevalence was 1/324 (0.31%; 95% CI 0.05â1.73); no participant tested positive for HIV. 167/297 (56.2%) POCT participants lived in the most deprived neighbourhoods in England. HCV RNA testing using finger-prick blood was technically feasible. Uptake was moderate and the offer of concomitant HIV screening showed a detrimental impact on acceptability in this low prevalence population. The findings should be confirmed in a variety of other community settings

Predictive impact of rare genomic copy number variations in siblings of individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
Identification of genetic biomarkers associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) could improve recurrence prediction for families with a child with ASD. Here, we describe clinical microarray findings for 253 longitudinally phenotyped ASD families from the Baby Siblings Research Consortium (BSRC), encompassing 288 infant siblings. By age 3, 103 siblings (35.8%) were diagnosed with ASD and 54 (18.8%) were developing atypically. Thirteen siblings have copy number variants (CNVs) involving ASD-relevant genes: 6 with ASD, 5 atypically developing, and 2 typically developing. Within these families, an ASD-related CNV in a sibling has a positive predictive value (PPV) for ASD or atypical development of 0.83; the Simons Simplex Collection of ASD families shows similar PPVs. Polygenic risk analyses suggest that common genetic variants may also contribute to ASD. CNV findings would have been pre-symptomatically predictive of ASD or atypical development in 11 (7%) of the 157 BSRC siblings who were eventually diagnosed clinically
Analysis of independent cohorts of outbred CFW mice reveals novel loci for behavioral and physiological traits and identifies factors determining reproducibility
Combining samples for genetic association is standard practice in human genetic analysis of complex traits, but is rarely undertaken in rodent genetics. Here, using 23 phenotypes and genotypes from two independent laboratories, we obtained a sample size of 3,076 commercially available outbred mice and identified 70 loci, more than double the number of loci identified in the component studies. Fine-mapping in the combined sample reduced the number of likely causal variants, with a median reduction in set size of 51%, and indicated novel gene associations, including Pnpo, Ttll6 and GM11545 with bone mineral density, and Psmb9 with weight. However replication at a nominal threshold of 0.05 between the two component studies was low, with less than a third of loci identified in one study replicated in the second. In addition to overestimates in the effect size in the discovery sample (Winner's Curse), we also found that heterogeneity between studies explained the poor replication, but the contribution of these two factors varied among traits. Leveraging these observations we integrated information about replication rates, study-specific heterogeneity, and Winner's Curse corrected estimates of power to assign variants to one of four confidence levels. Our approach addresses concerns about reproducibility, and demonstrates how to obtain robust results from mapping complex traits in any genome-wide association study
Educating novice practitioners to detect elder financial abuse: A randomised controlled trial

An evidence-based educational intervention was developed to advance practitionersâ decision-making in this domain. The objective was to test the effectiveness of a decision-training educational intervention on novicesâ ability to detect elder financial abuse. The research was funded by an E.S.R.C. grant reference RES-189-25-0334.
Methods - A parallel-group, randomised controlled trial was conducted using a judgement analysis approach. Each participant used the World Wide Web to judge case sets at pre-test and post-test. The intervention group was provided with training after pre-test testing, whereas the control group were purely given instructions to continue with the task. 154 pre-registration health and social care practitioners were randomly allocated to intervention (n78) or control (n76). The intervention comprised of written and graphical descriptions of an expert consensus standard explaining how case information should be used to identify elder financial abuse. Participantsâ ratings of certainty of abuse occurring (detection) were correlated with the expertsâ ratings of the same cases at both stages of testing.
Results - At pre-test, no differences were found between control and intervention on rating capacity. Comparison of mean scores for the control and intervention group at pre-test compared to immediate post-test, showed a statistically significant result. The intervention was shown to have had a positive moderate effect; at immediate post-test, the intervention groupâs ratings had become more similar to those of the experts, whereas the controlâs capacity did not improve. The results of this study indicate that the decision-training intervention had a positive effect on detection ability.
Conclusions - This freely available, web-based decision-training aid is an effective evidence-based educational resource. Health and social care professionals can use the resource to enhance their ability to detect elder financial abuse. It has been embedded in a web resource at http://www.elderfinancialabuse.co.uk.ESR
Weakened magnetic braking as the origin of anomalously rapid rotation in old field stars
A knowledge of stellar ages is crucial for our understanding of many
astrophysical phenomena, and yet ages can be difficult to determine. As they
become older, stars lose mass and angular momentum, resulting in an observed
slowdown in surface rotation. The technique of 'gyrochronology' uses the
rotation period of a star to calculate its age. However, stars of known age
must be used for calibration, and, until recently, the approach was untested
for old stars (older than 1 gigayear, Gyr). Rotation periods are now known for
stars in an open cluster of intermediate age (NGC 6819; 2.5 Gyr old), and for
old field stars whose ages have been determined with asteroseismology. The data
for the cluster agree with previous period-age relations, but these relations
fail to describe the asteroseismic sample. Here we report stellar evolutionary
modelling, and confirm the presence of unexpectedly rapid rotation in stars
that are more evolved than the Sun. We demonstrate that models that incorporate
dramatically weakened magnetic braking for old stars can---unlike existing
models---reproduce both the asteroseismic and the cluster data. Our findings
might suggest a fundamental change in the nature of ageing stellar dynamos,
with the Sun being close to the critical transition to much weaker magnetized
winds. This weakened braking limits the diagnostic power of gyrochronology for

'Surely the most natural scenario in the worldâ: Representations of âFamilyâ in BBC Pre-school Television
Historically, the majority of work on British childrenâs television has adopted either an institutional or an audience focus, with the texts themselves often overlooked. This neglect has meant that questions of representation in British childrenâs television â including issues such as family, gender, class or ethnicity - have been infrequently analysed in the UK context. In this article, we adopt a primarily qualitative methodology and analyse the various textual manifestations of âfamilyâ, group, or community as represented in a selected number of BBC pre-school programmes. In doing so, we question the (limited amount of) international work that has examined representations of the family in childrenâs television, and argue that nuclear family structures do not predominate in this sphere
Preliminary Limits on the WIMP-Nucleon Cross Section from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS)
We are conducting an experiment to search for WIMPs, or weakly-interacting
massive particles, in the galactic halo using terrestrial detectors. This
generic class of hypothetical particles, whose properties are similar to those
predicted by extensions of the standard model of particle physics, could
comprise the cold component of non-baryonic dark matter. We describe our
experiment, which is based on cooled germanium and silicon detectors in a
shielded low-background cryostat. The detectors achieve a high degree of
background rejection through the simultaneous measurement of the energy in
phonons and ionization. Using exposures on the order of one kilogram-day from
initial runs of our experiment, we have achieved (preliminary) upper limits on
the WIMP-nucleon cross section that are comparable to much longer runs of other
