N-Type Oxide Thermoelectrics Via Visual Search Strategies
We discuss and present search strategies for finding new thermoelectric
compositions based on first principles electronic structure and transport
calculations. We illustrate them by application to a search for potential
n-type oxide thermoelectric materials. This includes a screen based on
visualization of electronic energy isosurfaces. We report compounds that show
potential as thermoelectric materials along with detailed properties, including
SrTiO3, which is a known thermoelectric, and appropriately doped KNbO3 and
rutile TiO2
Mapping local optical densities of states in silicon photonic structures with nanoscale electron spectroscopy
Relativistic electrons in a structured medium generate radiative losses such
as Cherenkov and transition radiation that act as a virtual light source,
coupling to the photonic densities of states. The effect is most pronounced
when the imaginary part of the dielectric function is zero, a regime where in a
non-retarded treatment no loss or coupling can occur. Maps of the resultant
energy losses as a sub-5nm electron probe scans across finite waveguide
structures reveal spatial distributions of optical modes in a spectral domain
ranging from near-infrared to far ultraviolet.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure
System for Hydrogen Sensing
A low-power, wireless gas-sensing system is designed to safeguard the apparatus to which it is attached, as well as associated personnel. It also ensures the efficiency and operational integrity of the hydrogen-powered apparatus. This sensing system can be operated with lower power consumption (less than 30 nanowatts), but still has a fast response. The detecting signal can be wirelessly transmitted to remote locations, or can be posted on the Web. This system can also be operated by harvesting energy
Coupled microbial bloom and oxygenation decline recorded by magnetofossils during the Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum
Understanding marine environmental change and associated biological turnover across the Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ~56 Ma)—the most pronounced Cenozoic short-term global warming event—is important because of the potential role of the ocean in atmospheric CO2 drawdown, yet proxies for tracing marine productivity and oxygenation across the PETM are limited and results remain controversial. Here we show that a high-resolution record of South Atlantic Ocean bottom water oxygenation can be extracted from exceptionally preserved magnetofossils—the bioinorganic magnetite nanocrystals produced by magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) using a new multiscale environmental magnetic approach. Our results suggest that a transient MTB bloom occurred due to increased nutrient supply. Bottom water oxygenation decreased gradually from the onset to the peak PETM. These observations provide a record of microbial response to the PETM and establish the value of magnetofossils as palaeoenvironmental indicators
Almost Sure Frequency Independence of the Dimension of the Spectrum of Sturmian Hamiltonians
We consider the spectrum of discrete Schr\"odinger operators with Sturmian
potentials and show that for sufficiently large coupling, its Hausdorff
dimension and its upper box counting dimension are the same for Lebesgue almost

Frame-Dragging Vortexes and Tidal Tendexes Attached to Colliding Black Holes: Visualizing the Curvature of Spacetime
When one splits spacetime into space plus time, the spacetime curvature (Weyl
tensor) gets split into an "electric" part E_{jk} that describes tidal gravity
and a "magnetic" part B_{jk} that describes differential dragging of inertial
frames. We introduce tools for visualizing B_{jk} (frame-drag vortex lines,
their vorticity, and vortexes) and E_{jk} (tidal tendex lines, their tendicity,
and tendexes), and also visualizations of a black-hole horizon's (scalar)
vorticity and tendicity. We use these tools to elucidate the nonlinear dynamics
of curved spacetime in merging black-hole binaries.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
