The role of quantum measurement in stochastic thermodynamics
This article sets up a new formalism to investigate stochastic thermodynamics
in the quantum regime, where stochasticity and irreversibility primarily come
from quantum measurement. In the absence of any bath, we define a purely
quantum component to heat exchange, that corresponds to energy fluctuations
caused by measurement back-action. Energetic and entropic signatures of
measurement induced irreversibility are then investigated for canonical
experiments of quantum optics, and the energetic cost of counter-acting
decoherence is characterized on a simple state-stabilizing protocol. By placing
quantum measurement in a central position, our formalism contributes to bridge
a gap between experimental quantum optics and quantum thermodynamics
Vivienda autosuficiente
Life cycle assessment of drinking water: comparing conventional water treatment, reverse osmosis and mineral water in glass and plastic bottles
This study evaluated the environmental impacts caused by drinking water consumption in Barcelona (Spain) using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. Five different scenarios were compared: 1) tap water from conventional drinking water treatment; 2) tap water from conventional drinking water treatment with reverse osmosis at the water treatment plant; 3) tap water from conventional drinking water treatment with domestic reverse osmosis; 4) mineral water in plastic bottles, and 5) mineral water in glass bottles. The functional unit was 1 m3 of water. The water treatment plant considered in scenarios 1, 2 and 3, treats around 5 m3 s-1 of surface water. The water bottling plants considered in scenarios 4 and 5 have a production capacity of 200 m3 of bottled water per day. The LCA was performed with the software SimaPro®, using the CML 2 baseline method. The results showed how tap water consumption was the most favourable alternative, while bottled water presented the worst results due to the higher raw materials and energy inputs required for bottles manufacturing, especially in the case of glass bottles. The impacts generated by domestic reverse osmosis were between 10 and 24% higher than tap water alternative depending on the impact category. It was due to the higher electricity consumption. Reverse osmosis at the water treatment plant showed impacts nearly twice as high as domestic reverse osmosis systems scenario, mainly because of the higher energy inputs. Water treated by domestic reverse osmosis equipment was the most environmentally friendly solution for the improvement of tap water organoleptic characteristics. An economic analysis showed that this solution was between 8 and 19 times cheaper than bottled water.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Structural Theorems for Holomorphic Self-Maps of the Punctured Plane
This thesis concerns the iteration of transcendental self-maps of the punctured plane C*:=C\{0}, that is, functions f : C*→C* that are holomorphic on C* and for which both zero and infinity are essential singularities. We focus on the escaping set of such functions, which consists of the points whose orbit accumulates to zero and/or infinity under iteration. The escaping set is closely related to the structure of the phase space due to its connection with the Julia set. We introduce the concept of essential itinerary of an escaping point, which is a sequence that describes how its orbit accumulates to the essential singularities, and plays a very important role throughout the thesis. This allows us to partition the escaping set into uncount-ably many non-empty subsets of points that escape in non-equivalent ways, the boundary of each of which is the Julia set. We combine the iterates of the maximum and minimum modulus functions to define the fast escaping set for functions in this class and, for such functions, construct orbits with several types of annular itinerary, including fast escaping and arbitrarily slowly escaping points. Next we proceed to study in detail the class B* of bounded-type transcendental self-maps of C*, for which the escaping set is a subset of the Julia set, so such functions do not have escaping Fatou components. We show that, for finite compositions of transcendental self-maps of C* of finite order (and hence in B*), every escaping point can be joined to one of the essential singularities by a curve of points that escape uniformly. Moreover, we prove that, for every essential itinerary, the corresponding escaping set contains a Cantor bouquet and, in particular, uncountably many such curves. Finally, in the last part of the thesis we direct our attention to the functions that do have escaping Fatou components. We give the first explicit examples of transcendental self-maps of C* with Baker domains and escaping wandering domains and use approximation theory to construct functions with escaping Fatou components that have any prescribed essential itinerary
