Ferritin in the fungus Phycomyces

The iron-protein ferritin has been purified from mycelium, sporangiophores, and spores of the fungus Phycomyces blakesleeanus. It has a protein-to-iron ratio of 5, a sedimentation coefficient of 55S, a buoyant density in CsCl of 1.82 g/cm3, and the characteristic morphology of ferritin in the electron microscope. Apoferritin prepared from Phycomyces ferritin has a sedimentation coefficient of 18S and consists of subunits of molecular weight 25,000. In the cytoplasm of Phycomyces, ferritin is located on the surface of lipid droplets (0.5–2.0 µ in diameter) where it forms crystalline monolayers which are conspicuous in electron micrographs of sporangiophore thin-sections. Ferritin is found in all developmental stages of Phycomyces but is concentrated in spores. The level of ferritin iron is regulated by the iron level in the growth medium, a 50-fold increase occurring on iron-supplemented medium

Attribution of injury in the shrimp antidumping case: A simultaneous equations approach

We apply a simultaneous equations framework, similar to that of Prusa and Sharp (2001), to the recent shrimp antidumping investigation in order to determine how much injury to the domestic industry—proxied by deterioration in domestic shrimp prices—is attributable to subject imports versus other market factors. We construct an econometric model then estimated with three-stage least squares (3SLS). We then apply the movements of each explanatory variable over the period of investigation (POI) to its respective coefficient in order to determine how much injury is attributable to that particular market factor. We find that subject and non-subject imports were essentially equal causes of injury to the domestic industry.3SLS

INVARIANT SUBSPACES AND HYPER-REFLEXIVITY FOR FREE SEMIGROUP ALGEBRAS

In this paper, we obtain a complete description of the invariant subspace structure of an interesting new class of algebras which we call free semigroup algebras. This enables us to prove that they are reflexive, and moreover to obtain a quantitative measure of the distance to these algebras in terms of the invariant subspaces. Such algebras are called hyper-reflexive. This property is very strong, but it has been established in only a very few cases. Moreover the prototypes of this class of algebras are the natural candidate for a non-commutative analytic Toeplitz algebra on n variables. The case we make for this analogy is very compelling. In particular, in this paper, the key to the invariant subspace analysis is a good analogue of the Beurling theorem for invariant subspaces of the unilateral shift. This leads to a notion of inner-outer factorization in these algebras. Customer-Specific Taste Parameters and Mixed Logit: Households' Choice of Electricity Supplier

In a discrete choice situation, information about the tastes of each sampled customer is inferred from estimates of the distribution of tastes in the population. First, maximum likelihood procedures are used to estimate the distribution of tastes in the population using the pooled data for all sampled customers. Then, the distribution of tastes of each sampled customer is derived conditional on the observed data for that customer and the estimated population distribution of tastes (accounting for uncertainty in the population estimates.) We apply the method to data on residential customers' choice among energy suppliers in conjoint-type experiments. The estimated distribution of tastes provides practical information that is useful for suppliers in designing their offers. The conditioning for individual customers is found to differentiate customers effectively for marketing purposes and to improve considerably the predictions in new situations.

Regional conditions during the 25 October 1986 FIRE cirrus/altocumulus case study

The regional cloud and meteorological conditions are described for this case using satellite imagery (GOES), dual polarization lidar data, NWS radar, NMC analyses, rawinsonde data including special soundings, and analyzed vertical motions. These observations are interpreted with respect to relationships between the observed cloud characteristics and corresponding atmospheric structure. Similarities with the 27 to 28 Oct. Seasonal Occurrence of Pine Root Collar Weevil, \u3ci\u3eHylobius Radicis\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), in Red Pine Stands Undergoing Decline

A trapping scheme was devised for sampling the pine root collar weevil, Hylobius radicis, in mature red pine plantations in Wisconsin. Adult weevils were trapped throughout the 1986 field season, and the method appears sensitive enough to discern temporal and spatial trends. The number of weevils caught was higher in stands symptomatic of the general condition currently labelled Red Pine Decline and Mortality. In some stands there was a strong tendency for trap catches to be particularly high near certain trees. Seasonal trends and sex ratios were compared with published reports of H. radicis activity in Michigan

The Wister Mud Pot Lineament: Southeastward Extension or Abandoned Strand of the San Andreas Fault?

We present the results of a survey of mud pots in the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area. Thirty-three mud pots, pot clusters, or related geothermal vents (hundreds of pots in all) were identified, and most were found to cluster along a northwest-trending line that is more or less coincident with the postulated Sand Hills fault. An extrapolation of the trace of the San Andreas fault southeastward from its accepted terminus north of Bombay Beach very nearly coincides with the mud pot lineament and may represent a surface manifestation of the San Andreas fault southeast of the Salton Sea. Additionally, a recent survey of vents near Mullet Island in the Salton Sea revealed eight areas along a northwest-striking line where gas was bubbling up through the water and in two cases hot mud and water were being violently ejected
