A College and Career Readiness Framework for Secondary Students with Disabilities
In this qualitative study, a proposed organizing framework of college and career readiness for secondary students with disabilities was developed based on a synthesis of extant research articulating student success. The original proposed framework included six domains representing academic and nonacademic skills associated with college and career readiness: academic engagement, academic mind-sets, learning processes, critical thinking, social skills, and transition knowledge. Focus groups were conducted to examine perspectives among state-level stakeholders with knowledge and expertise regarding college and career readiness, drop-out prevention, and secondary transition. Through an iterative process, the focus group data were analyzed and the framework was refined based on findings. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research are discussed
Causality in Political Networks
As the study of political networks becomes more common in political science, greater attention to questions of causality is warranted. This essay explores competing visions of causality in political networks. Independent essays address issues of statistical model specification, identification of multi-step personal influence, measurement error, causality in historical perspective, and the insights of field experiments. These essays do not agree entirely on the nature of causality in political networks, though they commonly take seriously concerns regarding homophily, time- consistency, and the uniqueness of political network data. Serious consideration of these methodological issues promises to enhance the value-added of network analysis in the study of politics
Contagion of Cooperation in Static and Fluid Social Networks
Cooperation is essential for successful human societies. Thus, understanding how cooperative and selfish behaviors spread from person to person is a topic of theoretical and practical importance. Previous laboratory experiments provide clear evidence of social contagion in the domain of cooperation, both in fixed networks and in randomly shuffled networks, but leave open the possibility of asymmetries in the spread of cooperative and selfish behaviors. Additionally, many real human interaction structures are dynamic: we often have control over whom we interact with. Dynamic networks may differ importantly in the goals and strategic considerations they promote, and thus the question of how cooperative and selfish behaviors spread in dynamic networks remains open. Here, we address these questions with data from a social dilemma laboratory experiment. We measure the contagion of both cooperative and selfish behavior over time across three different network structures that vary in the extent to which they afford individuals control over their network ties. We find that in relatively fixed networks, both cooperative and selfish behaviors are contagious. In contrast, in more dynamic networks, selfish behavior is contagious, but cooperative behavior is not: subjects are fairly likely to switch to cooperation regardless of the behavior of their neighbors. We hypothesize that this insensitivity to the behavior of neighbors in dynamic networks is the result of subjects’ desire to attract new cooperative partners: even if many of one’s current neighbors are defectors, it may still make sense to switch to cooperation. We further hypothesize that selfishness remains contagious in dynamic networks because of the well-documented willingness of cooperators to retaliate against selfishness, even when doing so is costly. These results shed light on the contagion of cooperative behavior in fixed and fluid networks, and have implications for influence-based interventions aiming at increasing cooperative behavior
Explaining Code with a Purpose: An Integrated Approach for Developing Code Comprehension and Prompting Skills
Reading, understanding and explaining code have traditionally been important
skills for novices learning programming. As large language models (LLMs) become
prevalent, these foundational skills are more important than ever given the
increasing need to understand and evaluate model-generated code. Brand new
skills are also needed, such as the ability to formulate clear prompts that can
elicit intended code from an LLM. Thus, there is great interest in integrating
pedagogical approaches for the development of both traditional coding
competencies and the novel skills required to interact with LLMs. One effective
way to develop and assess code comprehension ability is with ``Explain in plain
English'' (EiPE) questions, where students succinctly explain the purpose of a
fragment of code. However, grading EiPE questions has always been difficult
given the subjective nature of evaluating written explanations and this has
stifled their uptake. In this paper, we explore a natural synergy between EiPE
questions and code-generating LLMs to overcome this limitation. We propose
using an LLM to generate code based on students' responses to EiPE questions --
not only enabling EiPE responses to be assessed automatically, but helping
students develop essential code comprehension and prompt crafting skills in
parallel. We investigate this idea in an introductory programming course and
report student success in creating effective prompts for solving EiPE
questions. We also examine student perceptions of this activity and how it

Jumping to Conclusions, a Lack of Belief Flexibility and Delusional Conviction in Psychosis: A Longitudinal Investigation of the Structure, Frequency, and Relatedness of Reasoning Biases
Two reasoning biases, jumping to conclusions (JTC) and belief inflexibility, have been found to be associated with delusions. We examined these biases and their relationship with delusional conviction in a longitudinal cohort of people with schizophrenia-spectrum psychosis. We hypothesized that JTC, lack of belief flexibility, and delusional conviction would form distinct factors, and that JTC and lack of belief flexibility would predict less change in delusional conviction over time. Two hundred seventy-three patients with delusions were assessed over twelve months of a treatment trial (Garety et al., 2008). Forty-one percent of the sample had 100% conviction in their delusions, 50% showed a JTC bias, and 50%–75% showed a lack of belief flexibility. Delusional conviction, JTC, and belief flexibility formed distinct factors although conviction was negatively correlated with belief flexibility. Conviction declined slightly over the year in this established psychosis group, whereas the reasoning biases were stable. There was little evidence that reasoning predicted the slight decline in conviction. The degree to which people believe their delusions, their ability to think that they may be mistaken and to consider alternative explanations, and their hastiness in decision making are three distinct processes although belief flexibility and conviction are related. In this established psychosis sample, reasoning biases changed little in response to medication or psychological therapy. Required now is examination of these processes in psychosis groups where there is greater change in delusion conviction, as well as tests of the effects on delusions when these reasoning biases are specifically targeted
Update to the Vitamin C, Thiamine and Steroids in Sepsis (VICTAS) protocol: statistical analysis plan for a prospective, multicenter, double-blind, adaptive sample size, randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial.
BACKGROUND: Observational research suggests that combined therapy with Vitamin C, thiamine and hydrocortisone may reduce mortality in patients with septic shock.
METHODS AND DESIGN: The Vitamin C, Thiamine and Steroids in Sepsis (VICTAS) trial is a multicenter, double-blind, adaptive sample size, randomized, placebo-controlled trial designed to test the efficacy of combination therapy with vitamin C (1.5 g), thiamine (100 mg), and hydrocortisone (50 mg) given every 6 h for up to 16 doses in patients with respiratory or circulatory dysfunction (or both) resulting from sepsis. The primary outcome is ventilator- and vasopressor-free days with mortality as the key secondary outcome. Recruitment began in August 2018 and is ongoing; 501 participants have been enrolled to date, with a planned maximum sample size of 2000. The Data and Safety Monitoring Board reviewed interim results at N = 200, 300, 400 and 500, and has recommended continuing recruitment. The next interim analysis will occur when N = 1000. This update presents the statistical analysis plan. Specifically, we provide definitions for key treatment and outcome variables, and for intent-to-treat, per-protocol, and safety analysis datasets. We describe the planned descriptive analyses, the main analysis of the primary end point, our approach to secondary and exploratory analyses, and handling of missing data. Our goal is to provide enough detail that our approach could be replicated by an independent study group, thereby enhancing the transparency of the study.

Feasibility of using the Automated Self-Administered 24-hour (ASA-24) dietary assessment tool in older adults
Background
Dietary patterns can impact the trajectories of healthy aging. However, dietary assessment tools can be challenging to use. With the increased use of technology in older adults, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility of older adults completing the online, Automated Self-Administered 24-h (ASA-24) dietary assessment tool.
Methods
We conducted a randomized, two-period, two-sequence, crossover design of twenty community-dwelling older adults (≥65 years) comparing their preference for completing the ASA-24 alone versus with a research assistant (RA). Participants were recruited via ResearchMatch.com and randomly allocated 1:1 to a sequence of completing both an ASA-24 alone or with an RA, separated by one week. After each session, participants completed an online 11-item feasibility survey (Likert-scale range of 1–5, strongly disagree to strongly agree). Mean and standard deviations were reported for each question.
Results
Mean age was 69 ± 3.5 years (90% females), with no differences were observed for sex, age, race, ethnicity, education, or income. Neither group felt a need for RA assistance (p = 0.34). However, both groups felt the system was easier to follow with the help of an RA (RA: 4.4 ± 1.3, vs. SA 4.6 ± 0.5, p = 0.65), particularly when they completed the ASA-24 alone, first (p = 0.04). When conducting the ASA-24 alone, there was less confidence the system could be learned quickly (SA 4.5 ± 0.5→3.4 ± 1.0 vs RA 3.4 ± 1.0→3.4 ± 0.7, p = 0.001). The ASA-24 was thought to be less cumbersome after repeated exposure in those concluding with the RA.
Conclusion
While older adults were able to complete the ASA-24 independently, the use of an RA led to improved confidence. Enhancing the sample diversity in a larger number of participants could provide helpful data to improve the science of dietary assessment
Secondary Transition Predictors of Postschool Success: An Update to the Research Base
Research suggests youth with disabilities are less likely to experience positive outcomes compared to peers without disabilities. Identification of in-school predictors of postschool success can provide teachers (e.g., special education, general education, career technical education), administrators, district-level personnel, and vocational rehabilitation counselors with information to design, evaluate, and improve transition programs. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to examine secondary transition correlational literature to identify additional evidence to support existing predictors and identify new predictors of postschool success. Results provided additional evidence for 14 existing predictors and identified three new predictors. Limitations and implications for research, policy, and practice are discussed
